"Career" Director: Hal Walker. Writers: Arthur Stander, Phil Sharp. Good Picture Quality, Re-mastered Sound. Original GE Commercials. This is just how it was shown on October 22, 1952! Uncut! The second episode of the series. In the opening titles, Joan's in a "traveling" outfit, not in a wedding dress, and the Roger Wagner Chorale sings a slightly different version of the famous theme song. This episode has two separate stories: First part opens with Brad counseling a married couple, played by Sheldon Leonard and Sandra Gould (she replaced Alice Pearce as Gladys Kravitz on Bewitched). The wife wants her own career and feels stifled. Brad shares a story about what happened to him-flashback to Joan pursuing a career in show biz-she lands a part in a commercial-due to a disastrously muddy turn of events, Joan realizes she'd rather be a homemaker. Margie Liszt plays Brad's secretary, in this episode called "Miss Burton." In subsequent episodes her name is "Miss Bromley." The part of the assistant director of the commercial, the guy in the baseball cap, is played by Bob Sweeney, who later that season played the part of Uncle Edgar (with the help of age makeup) in the episode of the same name. The second part of the story line deals with Brad's re-election as Judge. Unbeknownst to each other, Joan and Brad invite political backers Mr. Bishop (Joan's invite) and Mr. Chester (Brad's invite) to dinner that evening. The two men hate each other. A GE Commercial for a refrigerator follows, with a couple describing ways of food storage that are, well, you judge. Both backers arrive. Mr. Chester in the dining room and Mr. Bishop in the living room, in a setup for comic gold. Joan serves dinner to the two men at the same time in what can only be described as a TV tour-de-FARCE! Physical precision like this doesn't come by often. Jim Backus' reactions to her antics are priceless. They worked so well together. There's a closing gag where Joan speaks to a departed relative, "Uncle Charlie." The same gag was used later in an episode of "Make Room for Daddy," with Danny Thomas delivering the line. After the wrap-up, there's another GE commercial, this one about a dishwasher, and then Joan does the final plug for GE.

Those were the days! This episode is hilarious with the running in and out, back and forth with the food. Such clever timing made this true comedy......nothing comes close to this good performance since. Only Joan could carry out such a difficult scene.

The segment where Joan does the television commercial was recreated years later on the Danny Thomas Show, when Kathy did the same routine of scrubbing the floor while the more glamorous actress used the sponsor's mop and got all the praise. I was therefore interested to read the contributor's comment that Danny Thomas delivered the same line about "Uncle Charlie" that Joan delivered in this episode. Another episode of i Married Joan showed her accidentally inflating a rubber life raft, a situation used years later on the Dick Van Dyke show, the one where Laura inflates a life raft in the living room and then tries to hide it from Rob. These recycled plots are only now coming to light, as these older series such as I Married Joan are enjoying a revival on KZbin.

Actually, it was the same writer using another name who used the rubber raft bit on the Dick Van Dyke show. He stole from himself! This bit was also used in The Patty Duke show, I think the episode is "the great outdoors." Patty's in a pup tent when they are "camping out" in the backyard and the raft self-inflates inside the tent.

I used to watch "I Married Joan" all the time. I particularly remember the episode when she attended a reunion of her high school friends and thought that she would impress them by letting them know that she had "married a judge!" The joke was that all her friends had become lawyers, and doctors, and actresses etc. thus diminishing Joan's "accomplishment" considerably.

It's my opinion, too. Lucy was an actress who PLAYED a comedy role, therefore, so many of her episodes come off as forced, and frankly, annoying, and that crying bit gets old fast. Joan was a comedienne, and as such, her timing, reactions and physical comedy were excellent. I found it astounding to learn that each episode was filmed in one day.

@@garymattscheck9066 And frankly, deservedly so. Joan was more like a genuine Vaudeville-type player - and an excellent one, whereas Lucille was an actress who played comedy very well. Lucy HAD to have a good script.
