CELINA, 37, and husband Joseph, 44, from Colorado, had the shock of their lives when they found out after three children and 10 years of marriage, they were in fact cousins. This all started when Celina decided to look into her heritage, however she never thought she would uncover a truth that would shake the very foundations of their happy family. Celina told Truly: "We decided to do our DNA test and that's when we found out. I was a little sick to my stomach. In my head I thought we were supposed to get divorced." Despite this 'devastating' news, the couple had a loving family and decided to stay together. But when they shared their story online, they were met with a tirade of judgement and hate. The couple said: "People have called it 'sick', 'why would you marry your cousin?' It's 'disturbing' and 'disgusting', 'I'd be embarrassed if I were those kids'." Regardless of the hateful comments the family have received, Celina and Joseph remain defiant and with the support of their family, ignore the haters so they can continue their life together. Joseph added: "To the people who were giving us negative comments, it's easy to speak on the outside without knowing the whole inside story. We found out almost 11 years later, three kids later... It's just not something you break up and walk away from."

I mean, 3rd-5th cousins isn't that big of a deal. It means they shared a great-great-grandparent at the most. I'm sure people throughout the early to late 18-19th centuries were mostly somewhat related to their spouses. It's just less common these days.

Exactly what I was thinking. Folks didn't have the ability to travel often back then so it was very common to see marriages criss cross between families. And you can bet there was always one old person in each family line keeping track of the genealogy to avoid any "kissing cousins" occurrences! 😁

Third cousins only share an average of 0.78% DNA. Fourth cousins share an average of 0.20%. Fifth is 0.05%. All these amounts are negligible and there is really no more chance of a recessive gene disorder being passed onto the children of any of these unions than in unrelated people. These numbers come from the 23andMe site. There is no problem at all with this marriage, and even if they had known beforehand the only illegal union is between 1st cousins.
@TamuNgina

Thanks for properly breaking it down. There are a lot of people who end up marrying the third, fifth etc cousins and don’t even know it. First cousins have a higher chance of inheriting birth defects, but 3rd-5th as they are is enough genetic diversity. Third cousins share great great grandparents. That's 14 other people adding their genes to the pool for each person for diversification.
@katherinehalliwell

@Ki We yeah that's what I meant. They aren't first cousins so it wouldn't be as bad. I've seen on youtube some pretty sad first cousin marriages and they had kids and the kids had major medical issues. It was so sad. But they look healthy and the parents didn't know until 10 years later. So I don't see the problem. Plus if they were to divorce it would be really hard on their kids.
@uderzo1984
@uderzo1984 Жыл бұрын
3rd-5th cousins are nothing, that's pretty distant. I have cousins in the states due to the migration from Europe in the 1800s and early 1900s, so yeah, the gene pool between me and them have grown quite large since then. The amount of genes that these two people share are minute. But genealogy are fun, to see that we all are connected. But I feel a bit sorry for people that just hear "cousin" and doesn't understand what it means, there is zero reason to be mean to this people. Statistically speaking there are probably more people that has been with or are with a distant cousin than you might think ;-)

I support them as well but I think it's disrespectful to the kids to put it out there. They made the decision to share but they took that privacy away from the kids bc unless someone takes the time to understand they found out so much later, the kids are gonna get treated unfairly by others.

3rd to 5th?! Oh man that's not that bad. The way people were reacting was as if they were 1st or 2nd cousins. 3rd to 5th means that their most recent common ancestor would be a great-great grandparent. Think about it, 1st cousins are the children of your parents' siblings, 2nd cousins are the grandchildren of your grandparents' siblings, 3rd cousins would be the great-grandchildren of your great-grandparents' siblings. Not many people in the US have even met their grandparents, let alone great-grandparents. Unless they're like a lot of African American families that have huge family reunions, there's no way they could have known they were related from the start without the use of dna testing. At 3rd cousins, they share less than 2% of their DNA.

Honestly when you do your DNA test you end up realizing that you probably have hundreds of second and third cousins. I have way more relatives then I ever thought. So yeah, you could totally end up married to someone who is related to you. I think it would be wrong if they had known about it before, but it wouldn't make scense to split up at this point.

Marrying cousins was pretty common up into the middle of the 20th century, it kept farmland and businesses in the family but also there was an issue with cost of travel going to the next county even for a dance at the community hall was so expensive most could not afford it, small towns/hamlets had mostly family to choose from. First cousin marriages were discouraged due to genetic risks to children.

I found that an Uncle of my paternal grandmother married his 1st cousin in 1920. They had a daughter who in case you’re wondering was not disabled.

People make it seems like marry a cousins is a big of a deal, with all the undisclose adoptions, parents giving up their rights, so many children in the system with no idea who their families are, what do you expect?? We are living in a dysfunctional society, with so many problems bigger than marrying your 5th cousin.

It's actually very possible to not know someone is related to you because I've several girl cousins that i saw pictures of many years ago that I've NEVER met to this day and if i ran into them we would all not know each other whatsoever besides my last name. 1 of them is absolutely GORGEOUS too!! I also have another cousin that i clearly do know since childhood but we don't talk or see each other hardly anymore since we grew up and i still have a MAJOR crush on her but she has no clue and even though I'd NEVER act on it,i dream about her and think about her all the time and i just texted her last night and told her we needed to get together and go have fun this summer and she's down.

It's a really distant connection, as long as at their wedding their families didn't know each other (not even one distant uncle) then it's fine.

There are so many people out there throughout the ages that have unknowingly married their cousins. And those people didn't have DNA tests. I think this happens a lot more than people think.❤

fifth cousin does not count! In many cultures first cousin marriages are allowed. Perhaps because people lived in villages, finding matches was difficult, and it was safer psychologically to marry among people you knew.

I fully support you guys!! 3rd-5th cousins is not a big deal at all!!! Back in the day they used to purposely marry first cousins all the time!!! The wealthy families did it to keep their wealth in the family and the royalty did it to keep their blood line “pure”. I once (before I knew he was my cousin) flirted with a 2nd cousin at a bbq! Until my uncle noticed us making eyes at each other and came over to save the day and let us know!!! I can’t say I know any of my 3rd or 5th cousins! Maybe I might have met a few of them once in my life and don’t remember them, but it happens! You have a really beautiful, loving family!! Don’t ever mess that up because of what others think!! ❤️💕❤️❤️💕❤️💕❤️💕❤️💕

#1 - She started researching her DNA cus everyone kept asking her "what are you?". Americans need to get over this sad tradition of identifying as part of a "race". If someone asked me what I am, I could say a bunch of other stuff more relevant to my character like "Uncle", "Programmer", "Nerd" #2 if having kids with a first cousin is about as high a risk for genetic birth defects as a woman in her 40s (a negligible 4%), then 3rd or fifth cousins is a total non-issue.
