Great review, you covered all the good and not so good bits really fairly. It looks like a well thought out product, as usual for Land Rover, they just need to deliver on the quality, customer service and reliability this time. I think the Landcruiser, and G Wagen will be the natural competition. Bronco and Wrangler buyers will probably be a slightly younger, possibly less financially established market.

@@RAKITHA9 Definitely more expensive to damage when off-road than its predecessor. I drove it's predecessor and towed a 3tonne drilling rig in it almost every day for a few months. It took a beating, but I can't emphasize how slow, uncomfortable, and unstable, noisy, and hot it was while doing so

Our local Land Rover dealer finally got enough of these in where they weren't already spoken for so I got to drive one yesterday. Look, it's freaking nice. Great ride with far better handling and road manners than anything this capable has a right to be. And yes, it is very capable for most people, most of the time. I know a lot of people watch too many KZbin videos and think everything needs to be able to scale fifty foot rock faces and crack the earth when in comes down on the other side without getting so much as a scratch but there's nothing that will do either. No, for real world usage this will get most people as far off the beaten path as they really ever should go and get them back all while being a great everyday driver for the ninety nine percent of the time they spend on pavement. You know, the pavement, the same place where ninety five percent of the guys wishing it had three lockers and forty inch tires spend their time. If you're a serious off road fanatic you build/modify a rig to your taste and needs from good used stock. You don't spend your time wishing a manufacturer would build the dream rig you can't afford anyway. Heck, I can't afford this thing. I just have a friend who works at the dealership. Oh, and in the Pangea Green, it looks fantastic. Yes, it really is a new and improved version of the old LR4/Discovery which is a good thing as the new Discovery no longer looks or feels like a proper Land Rover.

I agree with you on many points except for one issue - where do you think we get that good used stock to build our real wheelers from? The manufacturers need to produce something we can work with even if it's in the second hand market. While the new Defender (as noted, really this fills the Discovery roll more than the traditional Defender roll) is adequate for light off-roading or perhaps overlanding it's not the sort of platform that will lend itself to future use as a serious off-roader. I just returned from Rovicon 2 with 21 Rovers on the Rubicon. Plenty of those were old Defenders or Series trucks. I suspect it will be quite some time, if ever, before we see this version making any sort of regular appearance in the rocks. So while I understand that most won't actually use the truck off-road, I'd have much rather this became the new Disco and they produced a truly utilitarian proper Defender for work and play; something that follows more in line with the model's roots as an easy to modify vehicle that can be built to suite your own needs.

@@donhappel9566 Hey Don, you raise a very fair point. And it's a point that speaks to the conundrum manufacturers face in how far they can or should go when it comes to indulging enthusiast ideas. Sure, would an updated but still old school Defender replacement have been awesome in theory? Absolutely. But how many people would have actually bought the thing? Enthusiasts tend to be guys who are second or third owners of that good used stock for many good reasons. Not the least of which is being unwilling to put a sixty plus thousand dollar new vehicle at risk when we know we could wait three years, buy it for half that, and build it the way we want for a total costing well less than new. Enthusiasts tend to put a lot of money into used car sellers hands and the coffers of aftermarket companies but not so much into the pockets of the original supplier. Ford is taking a shot with the Bronco but Ford is also big enough to absorb a hit if sales fall of a cliff after two or three years. Land Rover can't do the same. Now, having said that, in the big picture I'm on your side. I definitely think Land Rover could have done better with the Defender and still delivered a product that would have sold in large enough numbers to justify it's existence (heck, it remains to be seen if the new version does that or not) while still being more capable and a better platform for future mods. So much of the rear control arm/air spring cup hangs below the center line of the rear wheels it's ridiculous. Pictures don't convey the mass of the thing or how far towards the rear diff it extends. It's absolutely wide enough to take consistent damage. But then LR doesn't have a body on frame vehicle left to pull from to easily deploy a solid rear axle on so development cost probably would have killed it before it started if they had tried. Still, the Nissan Patrol/Armada uses an independent rear and in Patrol version at least it's as capable or more so with much less mass below the wheel center-line to get hung up on something. There's no doubt LR could have done more for the enthusiast while still retaining mass appeal. Unfortunately, the typical first owner of the Defender or any other new LR product is the guy who will never test the capabilities it comes with much less worry about upgrades in the future. It's a case of they could have done better for me and you but they didn't have to because their demographic isn't me and you.

@@davep2945 Well spoken and well reasoned - I can't argue with you at all. I understand the logic of why they went the way they did but I do think they missed a market opportunity. We all knew the original Defender had to be replaced; it was a tractor by today's standards. I toured around Scotland in a lightly mod'ed '16 model last summer and while I enjoyed it as a Rover nerd it's shortcomings were not lost on me. Had Rover gotten their act together on this 10 years earlier and targeted the Jeep JK Unlimited Rubicon in terms of off-road capability, upped the payload and towing to keep with the more utilitarian history of the Rover, priced it $10K over the Jeep, thrown some roof top tents and other 'overland' accessories on it and flogged a retro advertising campaign about being the "original overlander" I think they could have shifted a ton of them to the newly found US 'overland' market who don't really wheel but like to look like they do. In the process they would have kept that halo vehicle that's so important in protecting the corporate image that helps set them apart from any other luxury SUV. It would also give the 2nd or 3rd enthusiast owners a platform to build on that would also further the corporate image and help drive new sales - look at the love the yellow D90 in this video garnered then remember it's a mod'ed truck built by an enthusiast. Then the Disco5 could have been positioned into the slot the current Defender2 fills. The traditional 3-car range of Utility-Defender, Luxury-Range Rover, and the tweener-Discovery would have been maintained. As it is they have a lot of basically the same vehicle with different styling at this point and I feel they're slicing that pie too thin and only robbing themselves of sales with the current strategy.

If you own them for a certain period of time they’re really not bad. I’ve had 3 land rovers with 80k+ miles and sold them before 120k. They were among the cheapest cars to keep on the road that I’ve owned. Just be sure you buy one that’s been well maintained, they are temperamental and will not do well with deferred maintenance. Some cars you can skip maintenance things without much protest, land rovers require all the regular maintenance, so deferred maintenance by previous owners means you’ll get stuck paying for it. We replaced our last one with a Honda Odyssey and it’s been by far the most expensive vehicle I’ve ever owned. Double the maintenance costs of any Land Rover, BMW, Mercedes, or Domestic vehicle I’ve owned.

Unfortunately LR have given up completely on the utility market and will never have a pickup version of this model, due to it having an alloy monocoque construction. They will have a very premium price van version of both the 110 and 90 available by mid 2021. The 90 will even be available with coil springs rather than air suspension. Pickup trucks sell like hot cakes in the UK to farmers, land based industries, construction, veterinary, engineering and utility companies. They are everywhere. Mostly four cylinder diesel with double cabs, around 135" wheelbase and with just over 1 ton payload capacity and 7700lbs legal towing capability. There is a new kid on the block, coming soon, the Ineos Grenadier, which will be a French built old-Defender lookalike. Absolute crap, I’ve had a Supercharged RRS for 7 years and it’s been a1 reliable, my dads had Toyotas in the same time which have had more issues. They are incredibly good all round vehicles, grate to drive on and off road, grate work horses and luxury family cars. Biggest problem is when idiots don’t service them then go crying because something goes wrong. If you want leaf spring, drum brakes and cheep servicing then sure buy a Toyota but if you want to do 140 mph have a dynamic grate driving vehicle which can tow well and do off road then put your hand in your pocket and buy the best

I don't like the way it looks. The outside of the defender reminds me of some of GM's interiors from their worst years.... No cohesion, no theme, just lots of different shapes and patterns all thrown against the wall. It doesn't appear to be a finished product to me. It feels like a design that was the result of a committee trying to get input from 37 different designers on the project, and give equal representation to all the designers, rather than let the 1 really inspired person draw the lines as a complete package.

Can you say death trap 3rd row seating..... Reliability any better than there well known historical record? You really have to consider a better milage test for the Ike. I know this will be unpopular but I still prefer the original Defender. I couldn't imagine a farmer using this Defender in his field pulling trailers around and when something breaks just easily grabbing his spanners and fixing it there and then. This new Defender is complicated and potentially is going to need specialist diagnostic equipment to fix something when it breaks. The older Defender at least was mechanically simple but robust. I'll wait ten years or so before making a solid judgement but I suspect these newer Defenders will not be as popular as the older one to farmers and those who depend on a vehicle for their livelihood.

The constant slowing down and turning and accelerating is what makes the tow vehicle work. Not to mention that your climbing to 14k ft elevation. The ike gauntlet is a straight highway where your not doing a constant stop and go. Less wear and tear.
