Yes, it's true. I may have quit social media forever. To be clear, the one I was REALLY addicted to was Twitter. But I'm not anymore! I kinda tricked myself into quitting. I'll show you how. (Also to be clear, I'm not quitting entirely. Just no longer addicted. I go DAYS without logging on. It's wonderful.)

For me- I do have a problem with both KZbin and Reddit! I started out in the KZbin comments, and then Reddit. Between the two, Reddit is better, but the threads disappear quicker since they are replaced by a newer thread. With KZbin comments, I get replies sometimes years after my original comment or reply to someone else's comment.

Something i heard about any addiction is that the more times you quit the more likely you are to quit for good. This might have just been your time. I've quit most social medias that way, by quitting multiple times over about 5 years. If you're trying to quit something, don't give up just because you gave up!! try again! it's gets easier and easier each time :]

On KZbin settings, you can turn off saving your watch history, next you delete your entire watch history. After that shorts do not work on KZbin. You can search for something and click a short and scroll through about 4 before it says it can't play anymore because it can't do suggestions. This will also turn off KZbin video recommendations on the home page. You can still see your sub box and search for videos.

Usual lurker here being brave and commenting. I wanted to get rid of socials for awhile but having a baby finally motivated me to get rid of it all. After reading about the effect of social media on children and young teens, that was the final motivation. I’m happier and doing more things I actually enjoy with my free time. I obviously still have KZbin, but I don’t think “the algorithm” has ruined KZbin in the same way it as all other social media platforms. My feed is still lots of educational, creative, and inspiring and usually fun content!

have you or anyone else noticed that the concept of the weekend seems to have just disappeared? with flexible working schedules, people working shifts/different times of the week in different industries, it's like nobody has rest days anymore regardless of when they're working. I'd love if we could all culturally learn from religions like Judaism that practice Shabbat. It was so forward thinking to have that practice/discpline/connective time with what's truly important. Even more important in today's never switched off never not hustlin' world.

@@joleneonyoutube Boy I sure have! I went into a career that runs seven days a week, which means I work every other weekend, as well as several other days throughout the week. Never having consistent rest days has really kind of thrown me off kilter. Because, yes, I get the days off, but I can't really plan a regular scheduled leisure activity or reliably make plans with friends (who do have consistent days off). It just feels like even when I get a day off, my mind doesn't quite disconnect and recover, because there isn't that dedicated protected time off where my brain and body know to relax and rest.

Got rid of all the socials a decade ago, i feel like probably when the engagement tactics was a little less intense. I listen to the news in the car and have KZbin constantly going in the background at home so I stay pretty up to date, honesty the only thing I’m ever missing out on is the memes so the worst side effect is just feeling like a confused grandma. I can definitely relate to the struggle when quitting a time-sink though, I’m *really* productive whenever I lose interest in video games and legitimately don’t want to go back but the second I let myself slip it’s months of “whoops spent 5 hours just sitting here doing and accomplishing nothing”.

For the strong opinions, I completely agree with you. I've always said that people tend to leave reviews most when they want to express anger or something, and it's the same for online in general comments. The people that express anger/negativity will be the loudest, second you got the people with super high excitement, and those with minor thoughts will just say quiet. I noticed that whenever I would go into the comment section on instagram, I just end up feeling like shit after. I still use instagram, but I've had a higher sense of general happiness from just not looking at comments anymore. Using apps for a "purpose" is important, I agree. We all know that all the apps are designed to keep us on them for the maximum amount of time and to be addictive so then more ads can be shown to us. My apps previously were subscribed to such a giant mix, and it makes it so easy to just keep scrolling. I recently cleaned up all my follows/subscriptions to focus mainly on just artists (because I do art and want to insert myself into the community) with only a few exceptions, purposely scroll past anything that's "suggested", and stick to just checking on what's new with those specific people before being done. It leaves me feeling like I've used my time well and I feel less like a blob.

I was only ever kinda addicted to facebook. Endless scolling without even planning to do so, was pissed all the time due to all the shit on there. I did it cold turkey. Deleted all likes , friends and everything with a script, since back then it was really annoying to have to delete everything one by one. That did the trick for me. As soon as none if my "identity" was on there anymore, and I didnt have any friends on there, i felt no need . I did feel lonely for a while, but that went away quick. It was the best thing i did that year. Congratz !!

This is super interesting to me how common I'm seeing this in this comment section - I used to do this at night to make my phone less stimulating/less bluelight as the bluelight filter making everything rosy/pink was annoying for me. Then I realised that I was wanting to switch it off to see the colours for games I would play at night to wind down before bed. So i learned a lot about what I was actually using my phone for habitually, - I actually WANTED the stimulation! - and that helped me figure out how to change the habit.

You have summed up my feelings on the subject perfectly! I never got into Twitter at all, but boy did Facebook reel me in. Facebook was fun way back in the day when it was just your friends on there (and actual forum style groups--remember Facebook groups?). But these days, most of it is ads and sponsored posts, perfectly calibrated to keep your specific eyeballs glued to the screen, and scrolling, and clicking, and scrolling, and clicking. And each and every comment section is filled with people with horrible opinions, hot takes, and the like, and I know some of them aren't even real people, and it STILL makes me feel despair for the state of humans every time. It just leaves me feeling depressed. And yet, it's so well designed that my brain comes back for MORE, another shot of dopamine from that stuff that doesn't even make me feel good! I hate it, even while I don't want to get rid of it completely, because like you, I do still find some good in it. My brain actually felt way more cleansed of it than it ever has before after this past Lent (I've given up social media for Lent every year for the past few years). But it's starting to creep back in. I need to block it the way you have. That's the only way. Deleting the app has helped (Facebook's website on mobile is shockingly clunky). But it's not enough. Thank you for the tips. I will be implementing them effective today.

I did this with KZbin last year for a while. I did the blocking stuff, but I think mostly I was just ready to quit. And I did, with pretty much no desire to go back, for a good six months. I wasn't monastic, I'd still use it to seek out specific information (which was always the killer on other times I tried to quit, the convenience would bring me to the site then I'd get sucked in), but it didn't have the same magnetic draw. Unfortunately, because it was relying on some unspecified mental state, that state eventually changed, and now I'm back to being on KZbin way too much. Cool video, but part of me expects a follow-up in a couple months saying why you're back on twitter. And that's okay, that's life. :) Enjoy it!

I have literally done this EXACT same thing. The EXACT process. But my addictive social media was Reddit. I quit all social media other than Reddit and KZbin in 2017, and it was the best decision I ever made. But Reddit was my weakness. Until I blocked it using an app on my android phone. Now I only go to Reddit on my computer, but only when I am looking for specific advise or information. I Reddit maybe 3 times a week, and I never use r/all or r/popular anymore. I am so out of the loop, and it has made my relationships better because now all my friends and family have to spend far more time explaining news and pop culture to me and we get to bond more and talk about it critically. I still use KZbin daily (we pay for no ads) but I only watch things that make me happy. I love when my husband gets home and debriefs me on the news of the day, with the added benefit of not having to sit through rage bating content creators. Anyway, I think my coffee is done, time to put on an old Driftless Pony Club CD and fold laundry while I catch up on Wheezy's newer old videos.

I enjoyed Twitter because it gave direct access to celebs I admired and they were fun contributors to the platform. Over the years those celebs came and went and came back and went away again, and now that Twitter is far worse than it has ever been and unlikely to improve they've stopped coming back (also, not just celebs, but also news organisations and my fave TV show accounts). So soon enough I'll go too. But I will miss all the non-celebs who have become my online friends who may not go to wherever I end up next.

I got on Twitter in 2008 too! And tweeted about... once a year. I kind of only use it to follow my sports teams. But it's mostly trash (except for the Merriam-Webster account and maybe some dog accounts). I don't use the app, and Twitter hates that I don't use their app, and won't let you post pictures or gifs outside the app. So I kind of don't look at it anymore at all. I realized that a) I am not missing anything, and b) when I did find myself scrolling on it, or reading the comments, I always started feeling bad or anxious. Eff that. BTW, the Twitter account "Avoid Comments" or "Don't Read The Comments" has existed almost as long as Twitter. It holds up.

Was also addicted to Twitter for a while, but then I lost my password and never bothered to recover it. Now when my friends talk about problematic tweets and controversial takes, I feel glad that I didn't go back. Still very much addicted to KZbin, Reddit, and IG (reels) tho.

Good luck with improving your sleep, I hope it works for you! For anyone else who is struggling & reading this - there is no one solution that works for everyone, I've worked on my sleep for years and incorporating screens intentionally and specifically for my personal neurodivergence was the trick (& it does involves staying off of any social media apps!). different brains need different things. detoxing/avoiding screens is always a really smart thing to try just to see how you respond but don't feel bad/ashamed/guilty if it doesn't work out for you, it just means you need something else 🥰🥰😊😊

@@joleneonyoutube Thanks, Jolene. I have also been struggling with insomnia for years. I've often tried getting off screens but only for a night or two and then I went back, mostly because I think I'm addicted to you tube the way Wheezy seems to be to Twitter. So this time I'm going to give it two full weeks of no screens at all after 6:00 PM. Have to keep trying, right?

@@d14551 the thing with addictions is that you have to recognise that engaging with said addiction is fulfilling a need - if you dont have a plan for alternatives to fulfil that need in the same way, of course you'll go back to it. what need is youtube fulfilling for you? social? emotional? nervous system/regulatory? the dopamine of the endless scrolling? stimulation/excitement/interest engagement dopamine? these kinds of questions actually lead me to a much more targeted path of changing my behaviours for the long term. fingers crossed for you dude!! please do keep trying 🤞🤞💪💪

I have two motivations for finally quitting Instagram and KZbin doom scrolling: (1) my mental health and (2) I am taking my state bar examination in a few months and I really need to get rid of the distraction and the opportunities to compare myself so I can actually focus on studying and not get anxious about whatever everyone else is doing. I think it would be really healthy for me, and will hopefully help me have a better relationship with the Internet as someone who grew up online.

You can do this in Windows by adding a line containing a reserved ip address not in use on your local network alongside the web domain you want to block to the hosts file in the Windows\System32\drivers\etc directory.

I feel the objective deterioration since the X re-branding has certainly helped. Every time I open it I stay there a short amount, and I find myself opening it far less frequently, and that's without any other methods to reduce my usage. It's just lost most of what made it great and therefore loses the draw to keep going back.

Craig, what do you do to relax? You and I are similar in our chair-time during the day and running/active times of day and kid activities. After all of that I just want to veg out for a couple of hours and inevitably I pull out my phone. I need downtime but not sure what to do during that downtime. Even playing guitar (which I enjoy) feels like more activity than I want to do.

I know. It’s just so easy to scroll. And maybe it’s fine. But I find it changes my mood in not so good ways. Other things that make me feel better: -Reading a book. Literally just on my phone with an Apple Books app or the kindle app. Or a physical book if there’s one around. Or comics! -a news app like Apple News. Feels so much better to just browse headlines and find a story I’m interested in, or not. Or just a single publication app like New York Times or you’re preferred news. (This might cost money though.) -Meditation. This doesn’t necessarily fill the vegging out urge though. -New York Times games app. Again, costs money. But it really is my go to. It’s so good because it’s limited. One game per day (but with like 4 or 5 different games including a crossword puzzle). I dunno. It really works on my. I’ve been playing them daily for years. I can’t believe I’m not sick of them yet. -KZbin. It’s still okay for me but could easily be too addicting, so tread lightly.

Last year I actually deleted all of my Twitter accounts. I found that it had become a cesspool and not the lovely place it was back in 2008. Add to that some of the questionable choices made in regards to hate speech and attacks on those of us in marginalized groups and I was done. I don't miss it... I was already mourning what it had been so quitting was also easy for me. I find I spend a lot of time on my city's main Reddit sub... at least there I feel like I'm actually discussing (and sometimes arguing) with actual people who at least live in my city... feels more like real life, I think? And I've become more active in what's happening in my community (transit, crime/policing, cultural)... it's been great! I think it's important to find online communities that bring something good into your life, maybe a little spice now and then, but not heap on more negativity... the world is full enough already of that.

I quit Twitter in 2021, so before the purchase/rebrand that made it even worse, and it definitely made my life better in the same ways you described. For me deleting the app off my phone was good enough because I couldn’t remember my password and that stopped me from ever logging in on the browser.

I feel like im in a similar circumstance. I love and hate social media. Ive set timers for myself on IG for 1 hour a day. I sometimes go over but never more than 30 minutes. I'm even debating on going even lower. I'm at the point where i want my thoughts back. I want my brain to be able to wonder without thinking "whos messaged me, whos left a reply to my on IG?" Etc.

Recently put a one hour timer on a couple apps I tend to (honestly) waste a lot of time watching things I don't care about and that don't provide anything positive or educative to my life, just mindless watching. That timer makes it so you can't use that app until midnight. At first I'd spend the hour halfway through the day, sometimes even earlier, but I decided to keep it at one hour and not give myself a few more minutes. Sure, you can open your laptop and use them there but whenever I felt I was going to fall into that, I immediately put on a tv-show or put the computer away and read a book. Now, about a month later, if there's a day that I use up that hour it's around the end of the day. It can be hard but it's worth it.

I’ve stopped using Reddit and it was maybe one of the best things I did. I used to scroll for ages. Sometimes I’d be like “I should stop scrolling and do something else and then the something else was just opening Reddit on a new tab. The hardest part was just breaking the impulse of opening Reddit. Once I got past that I never missed using it or had a desire to use it.
