I've worked outdoors in Florida for over 5 Decades, I learned REAL FAST to either keep some Salt Rocks in a zip lock baggy and suck on one every few hours or to put about a 1/4 teaspoon of Iodized Salt into each gallon of water I took with me. Later I started adding an 1/8 teaspoon of NoSalt (Potassium Chloride, Potassium Bitartrate) into it as well. I felt much better drinking that than just plain water while sweating through my cloths during the UNGODLY Humid Summers here while on a Roof laying shingle. ;~) P.S. I tried Gatorade at one time and even if I just drank it occasionally throughout the day I got stomach cramps. My ICE COLD No Calorie Electrolyte mix kept me going just fine. I still mix a batch up if I'm going be active out in the heat for more than a few hours.

I noticed big differences when I started drinking about 1 gallon of water (not including other drinks, which I don't drink all that much of anyway) every day. I got a 1/2 gallon bottle, so I only have to fill it twice a day, which makes tracking easier. My skin did improve, I didn't feel as hungry (and thereby lost weight, a little, but not insignificant), I had a generic feeling of "betterness". HOWEVER. I definitely was a person who didn't drink much of anything at all ever before, so I 100% was probably slightly dehydrated on a regular basis. It took a while to adjust and it wasn't easy getting all that fluid down. I felt like I was internally swimming until my body accepted that it was finally being hydrated. But it has been 3+ months now I can drain a gallon+ without thinking about it, and I REALLY notice on days when I didn't drink as much. So there's no harm in trying, because you never know, but unless you're like me, a historically and chronically under-hydrated person, you may not notice a difference at all.

A few years ago I went on a water challenge and have pretty much kept up the habit since. From time to time I’ll have a/few days where I’m not drinking much, usually if my routine is off due to holiday’s etc, and I usually realise because my head will feel pressure and generally not as ‘normal’ feeling. Then it’s like oh okay I haven’t had a glass of water since yesterday better fix that. Water isn’t a miracle cure buts it’s absence is noticeable.

Having been actually dehydrated before, I gotta say you can definitely tell that something is wrong. For me it happened slowly over the course of a couple weeks - I'd walk to work and feel super tired (like, almost fall asleep standing up tired) so I figured I should drink some caffeine and push through it because I didn't really have a choice. In hindsight, it was drinking like a quart of liquid that helped rather than the caffeine. But it clearly wasn't enough to compensate for walking 20 minutes each way in the summer heat plus working on my feet for 8 hours in a warm kitchen without sitting down, because it kept happening. Being young and dumb I dismissed it even though that level of tired on a normal night's sleep isn't normal. And then one day I felt a little dizzy, then a lot dizzy, then I was so dizzy I was throwing up/heaving well past when my stomach was empty. So I called the nurse line at my university's health clinic and the nurse told me I needed to go to a doctor immediately. Which in all honesty probably saved my life because I felt so terrible I don't think I had the wherewithal to make rational decisions, but the straightforward instruction of "go to a doctor now" was simple enough

glad you've taken the time to bust some hydration/dehydration myths & mentioned that you can drink too much as well! i've developed a bit of a compulsive habit (for lack of a better word) since childhood (when i actually got hospitalised for over-hydrating) & tend to drink too much or not get peace of mind until i've had another sip of water & it's Not Cute. this weird 'make sure you hydrate!!!' culture that has developed recently surely means well but it only triggers me to drink even more which is all but ideal so it's so good to see that being talked about!

As a manual therapist, I get asked questions about water intake all the time. I also find myself asking my patient's when their tissue feels "gummy" to me if they're drinking enough water. A close friend suffered from migraines for 30 years- turns out he was simply chronically dehydrated. He did drink water but not quite enough.... now he drinks more water and he's fine. I love that you made this video because people need to know that there is no perfect amount across the board and that it is very individual. If I don't get a minimum of ~70oz in an average day, I will wake up the next day in more pain than normal and will feel very achy and almost swollen (one of my personal indicators that I am dehydrated actually is finger swelling). It's great that you did this test because now you can use it as a baseline to see what your body likes as far as water intake, which it sounds like you are doing. I wish more people would give it a try! Oh, and keeping track is easy if you just use a large bottle or thermos, like a litre or more. It's simple to count to 2 or 3 and know you have met your goal! Using that larger container was the change I needed to make sure I got the water my body wanted to be happy. :)

I did this myself after reading all the stuff about water and skin and weight loss and i noticed absolutely no difference other than peeing every hour. My eyes were still dry, my skin was still dry, i still got headaches and worst of all i was still hungry and needing snacks. What i do notice is when i don't eat enough watery veggies and fruits. Like when i don't eat melons/cucumbers for a while, i do notice a difference. So me thinks our bodies might be absorbing more water from our food than from actually drinking water.

I think that is actually correct. Something along the lines of when we drink water on its own it just slooshes through, but when we drink/eat it with other stuff, soups, foods high in water content, then it is digested differently by our bodies, offering more benefits. I might have butchered that quite a bit, but its the general gist of it. Good job for noticing - as in, we are told these things walk 10,000steps, drink 2ltrs, but we still need to remember to listen to our bodies.

I’m a classical singer, so I drink 3 liters of water per day (counting tea and other beverages). I thought I drank enough before starting to track it on an app, but I honestly probably drank less than half of what I currently do. It hasn’t changed my life, but it’s good for my vocal health, especially on days when I spend several hours singing, and it does keep me from feeling the need to snack. I don’t know how much it really affects my overall health, but I enjoy it. Hydrate, feel great!

Eventually, you can drink so much water your wash out your electrolytes and one morning you wake up and your muscles burn, you can't move, and you hurt like hell all over like fibromyalgia. Sometimes your heart races and lips and nail beds crack too, because that kind of hydration triggers a homeostatic rebound. The irony is once you pass the over-hydration point, you have a thirst you can't quench and then you stop your own heart all by yourself with more water for a burning thirst that can't be quenched. It happened to me with over one gallon per day, and my friend who was drinking cans of carbonated water to lose weight. When he called me to tell me he could barely curl his fingers to hold the phone I told him what I did to break the cycle: Drink a cup of boullion to replace electrolytes. It relieves water rebound within minutes. After that, both he and I stopped binging on waters our bodies weren't designed to ingest. My friend diagnosed with fibromyalgia, stopped drinking water and her pains cleared up. Interestingly at about the same time MORE WATER was the recommendation for 'cleansing' and 'weight control', MORE CASES of fibromyalgia started to pop up out of nowhere.

@@ian1352 not true. I agree with Vaz, except in my case I've always had trouble sensing when I'm thirsty, even as a child. I end up realising I'm dehydrated by way of headaches, dry, gritty eyes (my main motivation to hydrate), the fact I haven't peed in a while and noticing low volume and deep yellow colour when I do pee. Often I'm able to go all day without realising I'm highly dehydrated.
