In the book, the movie, and the musical, this is one of my favorite scenes. When Celie finally stands up for herself, it's so wonderfully cathartic, you want to cheer for her, no matter the medium you're watching the story in.

"I'm maybe poor, black and ugly... BUT, DEAR GOD, I'M HERE!!!" That's the reference from the movie. Amazing show.
@macy20005 жыл бұрын
I know I'm probably being picky but it's not a reference to the movie really because the movie was quoting the book. And actually the movie missed out a lot of the emotional depth that the book had. Sorry if I come across as rude I don't mean to I just rarely see people appreciating the book and that's sad because without the book we wouldn't have had the film or the musical

To be honest it a note that sits in the middle and is isnt anywhere insane so after doing it a couple times you kind of know where to start. same with if there is a song you sing with no music
@SwissArmyCheese5 жыл бұрын
I mean, it's a super easy musical part to remember. Each line of "I may be" is the same note, and it's in a conversational tone. By the time she's begun the music is there affirming her key anyways, so it's not hard.

i watched the movie first so i could see what to expect. i cried 3 times and guess what? Those 3 times were from the 3 leading ladies: I first cried with Sophia, with how fast the mayor incident changed her life because is the first woman that shows rejection to men manipulation on Celie's life; secondly i cried with Celie bc "i'm here" duh?; and thirdly i cried with Shug bc of her situation with her dad (that is not showed on the musical). The musical is incredible, but God, i cried more with the movie than the show. The show is so gentle in comparison to the movie.

Basically they’re all having Easter dinner. Shug Avery is back in town with her new husband, during this visit Celie and shug find all the letters from celie’s sister that the husband (“mister”) had been hiding from her for years. Shug finally realizes what a piece of shit mister is, celie reaches her breaking point and finally plans to leave to go back to Memphis with shug. In this scene during dinner, celie finally stands up for herself and tells mister off then finally leaves to have her new life away from her abusive husband. (I’ve never seen the show but I read the book, hope that helps!)

While I've loved everything else about Cynthia's performance as Celie, I feel like this is the one part that she pales in comparison to Fantasia's interpretation. Cynthia's Celie is strong and stoic, while Fantasia's is raw and emotionally transparent which I think works better for this particular scene.
@candle23productions187 жыл бұрын
I disagree cynthia's celie is more like the movie. She was stoic she was strong. I think cynthia brought something to this rile that no other celie before her as ever done. truly iconic.
@pjm92757 жыл бұрын
Taka Ono I think Cynthia's Celie was meant to portray someone who had been emotionally numb from all the rape, abuse, and pain she felt over the years but she was intimidated into keeping her feelings to herself. This moment is essentially Celie finally coming out of her shell so maybe she doesn't know how to be fully emotional yet. I can't speculate as to who is better because I never saw Fantasia.

@Juliandstewart7 жыл бұрын
That is true Everyone can bring something new and different to a character. Cynthia is an amazing singer and actress. They are completely different. In my opinion I thought it was a little bit to fast. You would have to pay really close attention to understand every word. To me it took away that one section that really changed Celie. The emotion of it.
