I learned this lesson about glands the hard way myself, As a result, I never use a chisel or air hammer on glands. I either try to find a generic spanner wrench that will fit as you did. or make a tool. Cost of the spanner is always less than a new gland...

Hey, Tip: Never use a CUT chisel for a hammer. As you learned it cuts as it is supposed to. if you used a FLAT ended rod or punch ( like on the air hammer) it might not have broken as easily. Best is to have a "Spanner" wrench on hand. Put that on your shopping list. Just trying to help.

I appreciate that and you are totally right. I got away with it a few times in the past on steel cylinder glands but I certainly learned that lesson on this one.

wow ive never personally seen a gland do that before, they make adjustable spanner wrenches on amazon that ive had good luck with. if that doesnt work i weld a plate onto the gland to wack with a hammer

Love that sound also! 🤣. Couldn’t help but notice the seat cushion at the end of the video. Vevor has some very reasonable replacement seats - I recently installed one on my trencher and I’m happy with it.

Ill check them out! Yes this seat is absolutely disgusting. Its on the list once I get the mechanicals figured out

The amount of air hammering that took to unwind, looked extremely stuck. i suspect that would have still broken, even using the right tool, so don't feel bad about it

Loving your videos! I have an 1980 310A and did the steering cylinder repair. I used a plain old spanner wrench. I think the key is applying the torque directly onto gland nut. Your spanner tool was offsetting the torque because of the rachet. Mine came off fairly easy.
@spankranchgarage2 ай бұрын
Right on thank you for sharing. I'm obviously a little timid at this point to really torque on it lol. But I can say for sure a chisel and a hammer is NOT the tool for the job

Very informative. My issues with my 6.0 today remind me of what you went through. Sometimes you gotta break something. I had to cut a bolt head off to get a plate off the top the engine at the HPOP. Bolts are cheap though. Not like a gland. Best to ya young man.

I have a 310 that had the same problem with not being able to get it into the higher gear s. It ended up NOT being a hydraulic problem. What I discovered was that the linkage underneath the transmission has a rod that passes from left to right through 2 cast "ears" that will seize (because of non use). first you need to disconnect the vertical linkage that goes into the cab. You might need to heat up the cast ears while utilizing a pipe wrench on the rod to rotate it while the cast ears are hot. Once you get that rod free be sure to lubricate the ears that the rod passes through and reconnect your vertical linkage to test from low to high gears. Hope that works.
@spankranchgarageАй бұрын
Thank you for that. I actually have a video coming out tonight about this exact topic. There is a sneaky little lock out pin under that shift linkage crossover shaft. When dirt settles there it blocks it up/seizes it. Tricky to figure out as there seems to be no info online about it

@unimog_jason2 ай бұрын
I have a clapped out 410 almost identical to this one. I tore the reverser out a couple winters ago and resealed it and replace my charge pump as it was completely wore out. Before the rebuild I was able to generate about 50 PSI with SAE40 in the case, after the rebuild I'm doing about 130, which I am happy with, the clutches no longer slip. I have a similar delay on my forward clutch but reverse is ok. Since reverse is a brake and fed with hardlines and forward is a rotating clutch fed through the main shaft, I assume it takes longer to charge the circuit, the seals are not 100%, so some difference between the two is expected in my opinion. I haven't messed with the screw yet, but maybe I should give it a twist and see what happens. I don't know that the normal recovery time should be for the charge system pressure, but when I was looking for a replacement charge pump, I could either buy the right pump for the 410, or go with a slightly small pump that was used on the ag tractors and 310. The cost of the small pump was a fraction of the 410 pump, I went that route. Perhaps someone has already been inside your machine and did the same? In the end, my machine works fine with the smaller pump, if I ever replace the high pressure pump, I'll likely downsize it to a 30GPM pump from a 310, I don't work the machine hard enough to worry about that extra 10GPM.
@spankranchgarage2 ай бұрын
Man that is some great information thank you for sharing. The forward clutch having more volume to make up makes sense with the longer recovery time. That's the kind of stuff I love hearing from people as studying the manual for hours I would never grasp that. I think you will be just fine with the smaller pump. As I understand it, any excess flow would just go to the cooler anyway. Not using this machine commercially 10 hours a day I think we can get away with a lot.
@unimog_jason2 ай бұрын
@@spankranchgarage Correct, excess oil goes to the cooler and my limit is about 2 hours of operation, and not in the dead of summer. I have spent a lot of hours in both the JD and US Army manuals to understand how every works in here. On your brake noise issue, I'm willing to bet the splines on the brake disks are a little sloppy. I replaced the differential in my machine, it's a MAJOR job to pull the axles housings out to get access to the brakes. Unless you are having functional issues with the brakes, I wouldn't worry about it.
