Not to start an argument with you, mate. But your country has a population of less than eighty million. Ours, not including unregistered illegal aliens, has a population of almost three hundred and twenty million. Our economy simply can't support free national health care.

You are correct on that. But it's rich because the asswipes who control all the money only divvy out a small portion to the rest of us. Those of us working sixty hours a week for $7.25 an hour trying to feed a family of four can barely eek out a living. Rent is outrageous, and owning a home is almost completely out of the question unless you have a really awesome job or live in the country.

Let's put it like this: I have a full time job and my employer allows me to purchase healthcare. If I have a family, insurance premiums are $900+ a month. To put that in perspective, many of the people I work with make about $350 a week. On top of that, you have a $3,000 yearly deductible you have to pay for each person, before insurance even helps pay. So if you have 4 people in your family, and all of them use insurance, you could have to pay $22,000+ a year.

I live in England and all I can say is that the National Health Service, although judged from time to time for the occasional slip up, is free. 'Oh but look at that huge increase is Income tax', no, no. Stop just stop and put yourself in a poor person's shoes with a curable disease. Now, would you prefer to be in hospital, or dying slowly of a very much curable disease? If it's done well, as it is in England, there's little or more commonly no corruption and no middle man. Free healthcare should be a human right and I have no idea why the UN hasn't attempted to enforce this already.

ACA =/= NHS. The ACA is costing more people coverage than it is covering people. The net loss is around 25million more people are uninsured now than were before Obamacare. The only difference is WHO isn't covered. And it's plain extortion. Increase in taxes, a fine if you don't pay it, AND huge hikes in premiums and deductibles. I would be 100% for a system like Canada's, which works. But the ACA is NOT designed to work. It's designed to fail. That is the only explanation for them hiring a Canadian web design company who had been fired for failing to make a working health care site, and spending 10x more than estimated on it, in addition to the huge loss in insurance coverage caused by ridiculous regulations. Oh, and if you can't afford the huge increase in cost that 80% of the country is facing, you get fined! Because obviously you can afford to pay a fine if you can't afford insurance. "We are going to make you purchase insurance you don't want, for more than you paid before, from our website that doesn't work, for more limited choices in coverage and doctors, or we will fine you" (Unless of course you're one of the many campaign contributors or government employee who are exempt from this "Great" law.

I live in Mexico and we have free health care also and it really sucks. It takes months to get checked for a doctor so a lot of people just go to private ones. I considerer that the americans should be careful with this one, as it can turn out to be a bad thing if they give too much power and money to the health service.

NicePeter, when I was 14, I had to have spinal surgery. Luckily, my family was insured and the insurance company picked up the tab. Well, the tab was $107,000. So yeah, I'm definitely on board with everyone having insurance. Having to shell out THAT much money so suddenly could potentially ruin a family. There's going to be some problems getting all of it ironed out, but I'm all for a bit more compassion in the world.

Louis James I was taped to a stretcher for 3 hours after a car wreck in which I went through a windshield, head-first. (Seat-belt was worn but suffered mechanical failure.) This was in America. The staff came in, had me sign release forms, and when they found out I didn't have insurance they left me there, without even turning on the lights. I paid the bill, in its entirety out of my pocket. It was over $10,000, and I could have easily slipped into a coma and died, leaving my family to pay. 2 hours sounds bad, (and I am sorry that you have to wait) but Americans pay, *out of pocket,* exorbitant sums for worse care than that. They didn't even remove the shards of glass or clean the blood off of my face before I was discharged.

xKingx16 Their debt is going up. They also have no law requiring you too get insurance. They do not force companies too pay millions of dollars too cover their employees... their law didn't cause it too be unaffordable too be a doctor, they don't say what good health care is(hence the dropped coverage for 15% of people).

I'm glad I've been following you since the end of season 1 (it's been around 10 years, and I'm Spanish, so I have to say your songs helped me develop my English greatly) and I hope you and eL keep doing what you do best, which is making people happy, and if it is through ERBs I'll be the first to sing along the lyrics. I applied for insurance under the ACA for my family, Mr. Shukoff. We apparently make 3 dollars too much per month to qualify for Medicaid and 50% too little to qualify for government subsidies. We work full time as contract employees and have for several years. Our employer is not responsible for our insurance. This means that my family is responsible for paying 40% of our monthly income, in premiums alone. That is before the costs of any doctor visits or medicine. My co-pay and medicine costs are the highest that anyone pays under the ACA, because at 40% of our income, we can only afford the Bronze level plan. Now, before the ACA, I could have bought a plan for 10% of my income, but those plans have all but disappeared to cover the costs of providing insurance to everyone in America. And true, I wouldn't have been able to afford insurance before, but now I can be fined on my taxes for not having it. And a refusal to pay your taxes is tax evasion, an offense that can land you in jail. So, no, I do not support the ACA in any way, as I feel it adversely affects the poor. I still think you are cool, Mr. Shukoff, but I don't respect the decision to involve politics in this amazing channel's message. Much love and respect to you.

I'm not wealthy by any means. My premium doubling was a big hit financially. The wealthy aren't footing this bill, it's the middle class. I'm not in a position to help the less fortunate so I don't want the added burden. It's bad for the country as a whole. And as far as better for the poor people, I truly don't care. Rule number one is take care of you and yours, and this reform seriously screwed over me and mine. Selfishness and capitalism are good. Survival of the fittest. There ARE jobs available. Work hard or die. The planet is overpopulated anyway. That's the cold truth.

superdrummergaming This attitude doesn't benefit the country. You're not thinking in community but in a rather harmful individualistic way. Imagine if everyone was thinking the same. I live in Holland, and I cannot remember a time without health insurance. It was therefore hard for me to understand the ungoing debate in America. This hypothetical situation made it clearer for me: You get hit by a car (doesn't matter whos fault it is), break some stuff and have to get patched up. The hospital has its costs: doctors patching you up, nurses caring for you after the patching up, general hospital costs, etc. Let's say the whole debacle cost you $40.000. Most people (especially lower class people) cannot afford that kind of money. Hypthetically speaking, your house could be taken away from you, just because you got hit by a car and didn't have enough money for that. For things like this, for people that do not have the insane amount of money laying around to cover their medical bills, it is a very good thing that there is a safety net. From a socio-economical point of view it is very important that people with low incomes aren't milked dry even further, because it provides them with less opportunities to improve their situation. You need to give those people a chance to give their children a better life, which is much harder if you don't have health insurance. Your country is a very special place, full of freedom and oppertonities. That's why this debate is so relevant for your country. Your history has taught you that freedom is one of the biggest rights, Europe colonizing America (Sorry Native Americans) and you fought for your own freedom against the colonizing countries: Great Britain, Holland, France, etc. I think this is why you value your freedom so much, and you should keep that. (Too short of a history lesson, I know. I hope you can see what I mean, without getting into the details.) Nevertheless I think your freedom is limited by NOT having health insurance. People that could have the opportunity to give their children better education could suddenly not afford it because someone in their family broke their leg! Therefore, I believe Obamacare is an amazing step forward in the right direction. Do not take this man for granted, by the way. You might not agree with his political views, but Obama has addressed many problems other presidents never dared to touch. As a foreigner, your gun policy seems a bit out of control (lots of shootings at schools, e.g.) and Obama discussed that subject. I think this man is/was (he has almost had is two terms) a great asset for America. Someone said, I'm sorry that I cannot remember who: "America is like a speeding train going downhill, and the president is the man tasked to stop that train from derailing." Never forget that he has one of the toughest jobs in the world, and that he could never fulfill all his promises when he became president (ending the war in Afghanistan e.g. had to be done much faster), because politics is a very intricate business. I think your country has learned a great deal from him. Excuse me for my grammatical errors: it is late here and I'm Dutch.

Interesting, since if you already had a plan that met the requirements, your coverage/costs didn't change, and if your coverage wasn't up to snuff you have even more ability now to shop for affordable coverage than you did before and can get a subsidy if your income level is low enough. Unless your provider is using the law as an excuse to price gouge, I can't take your claims of an almost 800% increase in medical costs seriously. If that is true, you should probably look into choosing an insurance company that doesn't use blatantly shady business practices.

Being able to get health insurance has meant a great deal to me. Thank you for taking part in this discussion. It is important that we help everyone else to understand the importance of having health insurance and access to affordable care.

Very cool that you got to meet him. I'm from Canada. Since its inception I have been really happy that public healthcare is coming to the US. It breaks my heart to hear all the stories of americans that cannot afford healthcare. It blows my mind that capitolist greed has kept healthcare away for so long, and its even more mind boggling that so many people have been convinced its a bad thing. Private healthcare has been the US people's most selfish action for a long time now. Its nice to see Obama caring for WE the people.

Australia (where I live) has the best health care system in the world, its free for GP. We can see a doctor in 20 minutes without an appointment and its free!!! Basic hospital: Free, Vaccinations: Free . If you have a life threatening illness, you get priority care for free, if you have health insurance, there is no waiting list for surgery. Medication is affordable $5.00 per month for the pill. My mum is retired and her healthcare is completely free. I had major knee surgery and it was only $8,000 in a Private hospital with the best surgeon in the country (I could get a loan out of my Superannuation to pay for it but I got most of it back anyway because it was necessary surgery). I feel so sorry for you guys over in the States, its like a third world country to us in terms of healthcare. I don't know anything about OBAMAcare but if is anything like what we have over here, do it.

The Affordable care act is horribly broken, far more expensive to this nation then it should be, and riddled with harmful side effects. That being said if you are against it you shouldn't unsubscribe to Nice Peter, he's still a good guy.

I live in Europe and I'll tell you this: there NO SUCH THING as FREE healthcare. You have two ways of maintaining "free" healthcare in a country: through State funds or through taxes. Here's the deal: it's NOT enough. The taxes have to be raised to pay for the healthcare system because, you know, people don't work for free and medical supplies cost money. I can bet with anyone that the moment the US government raises the taxes to support it, Americans will flip out. The other way is opting for State funds. The State uses the money they already have for it. And so you'll be raising your debt because you won't have enough money. And no country can support healthcare by spending more money in it than the money the State makes. So what will happen is what's happening in some European countries (like mine): the State will go near bankrupt because they can't afford to give free healthcare to everyone. And as people age, so will their salaries (the thing that pays health care) disappear and the taxes decrease. There's no way around this: no matter how awesome free healthcare seems, it's not a good idea for the country in general. It's a better option to keep State services to the minimum and leave the rest to private offerings. Now what the US government should do is prevent the insurance companies etc from exploiting the fact that there's no public healthcare. Corporation greed is the only thing that ruins the American model of health care.

I totally agree, it's not free. And unfortunately, almost nobody is telling the American public that their tax rates are the lowest they've been in decades, and in other developed nations, tax rates are much higher. I totally agree with your main points on the issue, however, I think it is unlikely and nearly impossible to to negotiate down high insurance and healthcare costs. What we need is to increase bargaining power, because you can't fairly negotiate prices for essential medical costs that keep you alive. I mean, "fair" prices for heart transplants range from several thousand dollars in Arkansas to a hundred thousand or more in the Northeast region. In some cases, insurance companies allow you to bargain for better prices, but the costs are simply out of control. So I think the technique in Europe was to negotiate large contracts in bulk to get providers to be competitive with one another and reduce their rates. This competition on a national scale seems to be a goal of the ACA.

On the other hand in my country we have universal healthcare and private sector as well. We do pay taxes, but the doctors simply don't give a shit about you and offer a rather low quality service if you don't provide them money through not very legal means (envelope). It's how the system works here, if you can't pay on top of taxes, they let you die, or don't give a shit about your problem until it's very serious.

Hi I'm from Wales in the UK and - Although I know literally nill about American politics - I must say that free healthcare is the best thing about not being an American. If that makes sence. In Britain we have the NHS (National Health Service) which covers pretty much every area of healthcare. If you need a dental thing done, need a new pair of glasses, if you have mental health problems, anything, you can get it done under the NHS. Quite frankly, that kicks ass. If anyone tried to take the NHS away, we'd scream bloody murder! Also knowing that if a homeless man got hit by a car, he could be rushed to hospital, treated, and not have any colossal debts after that he'd have no chance in hell of paying - surely that's worth paying a bit more in taxes. Its not as if you're being asked to pay everyone's health bills at once, everyone pays a tiny percentage. The idea of 'Why should I pay for someone elses kidney transplant?' is pretty selfish. What if one day you had to have a kidney transplant? You'd be happy for everyone else to chip in then wouldn't you? It's such a great system, it's more fair than many people realise. Seriously man - What's the deal?

I've always had health coverage for myself and my family. I grew up in a house headed by a nurse, and I left high school and joined the Navy. I don't know what it's like not having access to healthcare, but as a healthcare analyst, I can provide some context for why the Affordable Care Act is orders of magnitude better than what we previously had, even for people who already had insurance. For example, economists estimate that nearly 30% of healthcare insurance premiums are due to hospitals recouping uncompensated care. That is to say, if you have insurance, you were already paying for the healthcare of people who didn't. This is due to the fact that hospitals incur about $40,000,000,000 per YEAR in lost revenues due to indigent patients' inability to pay. That's not even taking into account that over 50% of all bankruptcies in America pre-ACA were due to medical bills. These medically-induced bankruptcies cost our economy several more billions, not to mention structural costs like enhanced staffing levels in emergency medicine due to chaotic healthcare use by indigent patients, opportunity costs in research and development and primary care, lost wages, increased use of sick leave or unpaid time off, plus the epidemiological effects on people who do have access to healthcare being exposed to contact with people who don't. The economic and operational impact of the ACA cannot be overstated. Hundreds of billions of dollars in real costs and economic activity are already being reduced, including the slowest 5-year trend in medical inflation in living memory. Oh, and also? Pre-ACA, 45,000 people a year were dying due to lack of access to affordable healthcare. That's 15 September 11s every year. So, it'd be nice to cut that number down a bit....

Personally it will affect my family in a bad way because were just kinda getting by right now and don't have the money to pay a premium.

Canadian here. Try and forget about finances, economics like debt or inflation, or money for a moment. They aren't real. That is to say, they are only real because man said so. We're all living on a rock in space. We make enough food for 11 billion people. Our current population is 7.2 billion. A third of the globe goes to bed hungry. Over population is a huge concern to our leaders. I live in British Columbia, Canada. All 7.2 billion people could occupy this Province's land area and survive. Egypt had huge protests recently. Millions of people gathered in one city. Billions could gather here. My point is, we're being lied to about far more than healthcare. To deny someone healthcare, when it's available, because they can't afford it should be a crime. Money isn't real. People are. Tell your President to abolish the Federal Reserve Bank, just like I'm telling my Prime Minister, I want the Bank Of Canada restored. That's the 1st step. Call money out for what it really is. A lie.

I did sign up. And I was automatically accepted for health insurance. I was elated. Well, I needed to go to the dentist and no office in my area accepts the insurance that I was given. So, I think that is a great step to get people health insurance. But only a step. If nobody is accepting my insurance, then there is not really a point to it. I feel that we are moving in the right direction, and the key is to remember that there is always room for growth. always room to adapt and make better options for people. On the same token, people need to realize that this IS a new program. There is always going to be hiccups and missteps when creating and learning something new. The hiccups for me are worth it if someone will see me when I'm sick or in pain. It's easy to complain about what's not going right. Try to think of what is, like the fact that once you find a doctor or dentist willing to accept your insurance, you finally get to have that piece of mind, that health check, that dental problem, taken care of. Remember when you were young and learning how to tie your shoes? Remember how, unless you were Chuck Norris, it took more than once to get it down? This health care thing is like that. Patience, Patience, Patience. We'll get there.

nicepeterToo What do you think about the fact that millions more have lost insurance than gotten healthcare since the rollout? Government regulations forcing men and post menopausal women to purchase maternity care, while giving exemptions to many members of government? How about the increase in premiums, but worse coverage for your dollar? All but the very lowest earners are paying as high as 100% more with the new government regulations, and having less after deductible percentage covered, as well as deductibles sometimes tripling. Before Obamacare, I was covered through Boeing, Blue Cross Blue shield, I paid about $200 a month to cover the 4 people in my house. We had $1,500 deductibles, and 90% coverage after. Free office visits, and the plan included dental. Since Obamacare, I was dropped because it didn't offer me maternity coverage, so the government required my plan be cancelled. Comparable coverage in terms of premium per month, $200 a month for ONLY ME, no dental, $6,000 deductible, 70% coverage after deductible, and I lost 80% of my doctor choices. Oh, also, the new marketplace is state specific. Meaning if I get sick or hurt while outside the state I live in, I am not covered by insurance at all. I am all for GOOD national healthcare systems, like Canada has. (My fiancee lives in the UK, and their NHS system is failing horribly) But the ACA is NOT a good system by any means. Obama has said in the past that he wants a single payer system, and this is their first step. They hired a Canadian web design company who had been fired in the past for MAKING NON-WORKING HEALTHCARE WEBSITES. There was no bid, the job was just awarded to them. It still doesn't work properly, after costing 10x as much as was announced. I apologize if I come across as an ass hole, but the propaganda that this system is good for anyone except the bottom 10% of income earners makes me mad. Costs aren't going up a little for everyone (Which would be fine with me) they are doubling and tripling for many. So yes, those who weren't insured now are. But MORE who WERE now AREN'T, and it's 100% at the feet of the ACA and its ridiculous regulations. Thanks for reading.

Residents are entitled to subsidised healthcare, and those on low incomes get either a GP visit card (so you can see the doctor for free) or a Medical card which means most things are free- although costs are rising. Prescriptions are €2.50 each now and blood tests are €20 for medical card holders. A lot cheeper than if we had to pay the full cost. Even without a medical card or GP card, costs are capped though- visiting A&E (the emergency department at the hospital) is €100 and a hospital say will never cost you more than €1000 a year, no matter what treatment you need. TL;DR: It's not free, but it won't bankrupt you.

As much as I knock our NHS in England, I am so grateful for free healthcare. I find it completely insane that a country as significant as America does not have this! I also find it completely bizarre that people would be against this idea!

A human being known from others more than other people. God fucking damnit, can't some people accept that some are excited and embrace that? Can we have ONE VIDEO without a total jackass ( or multiple ) in the comment section?

Icestone he is just a human being am I right? because his job is being president doesn't mean he is special. the same goes with artist's and celebrity's . he can get exited nothing wrong with that but it's not something special. at the end no one cares not even you.

***** Actually they are special in the sense of popularity. Nobody knows the average person, but they do know the public person. If someone says: "I met with a friend last day" or "I met with the president last day", what statement is more impressive? They are not necessarily better persons or more intelligent, they are public and that's what's special.

I am in love with the idea of everyone being able to access healthcare! My issue is that my husband and I, two 23 year olds, aren't making enough money with our minimum wage 25 hour a week jobs to afford to pay the "cheapest" healthcare that Obamacare has to offer, which for us was 140 a month. At the end of the month after our bills, which are as minimal as possible (though yes, we do pay for internet, I guess we don't have to, we'd have 35 extra bucks a month), and groceries, which are also minimal, and gas for our cars to get to work- and we are left with 100 dollars to TRY and create a savings out of. He just got out of the military, but if anything it is making it harder for us to find affordable health care. So yes. I love the idea, but only in theory. In practice? I can't afford it, and without health insurance, I am going to be billed for NOT having health insurance next year on my taxes. Come on. Maybe I'm missing something here? Tell me NicePeter! And congrats on meeting the prez, that must have been empowering!

I'm living in the Netherlands- I was hospitalized for 3 months just because a bus driver did not take time to look ahead before driving a crossroad: our collective insurance(which cost us € 1200.-($ 1650.-) per year, 1 parent, 2 kids) makes it possible for everyone to be helped when needed. To bad a couple of readers/ subscribers only want to "strike you down" because your interested in what their opinion is upon ObamaCare. Keep up the good work Peter! :-)
