Especially with type matchups which is a huge hurdle to all new players despite being second nature to us old veteran players.

Looking at it like this, it really puts into perspective just how much we had to learn over the years just to play these games on the casual level from childhood.
@whimsicalstray2 жыл бұрын
For all games, really. There are so many little nuances that most of us overlook. I think navigation is a huge one. In a lot of games there will be hints like environmental light sources that create a trail of breadcrumbs. Most of us that have grown up gaming will pick up on these cues. Pokemon is a little more clunky, with nothing but a map and dialogue from NPCs about what city you should head to. Some games have mini maps or a compass with waypoints. Ultimately, there's some light problem solving going on to reach an objective. Games involve a lot of multitasking and seeking out the problem to be solved. My parents (who were teens and young adults in the 90s) can't play anything with a controllable camera or maybe even most games with an analog stick for movement. So there's definitely some layers of complexity that we've become accustomed to.
@munchimoo2 жыл бұрын
@@whimsicalstray yep, its honestly amazing and it goes to show how much gaming does for people. we learn how to multitask, have really good hand-eye coordination, and are able to critically think and solve problems very quickly because of all of the information we are gathering. Makes sense. Videogames really are quite the phenomenon when you think about it. A bunch of nerds took computers used for science, military and academic purposes and did something to make them fun. All you had were knobs and keypads, but you could use them to interface and that's what mattered. I remember old 90's computer games that still had you moving around with the arrow keys and we were looking at the quake pro's like aliens over their wierd WSAD movement, that's so illogical it'll never catch on... now look at us. Gaming consoles are a wierd concept, that we have entire devices devoted to the single sole purpose of "wasting time" and entertainment, buttons and controller sticks made for the express purpose of interfacing with these games to the point they hardly work as traditional computers anymore. Controlling these things has been an absurdly fascinating journey. Going back to old experimental controls is... jarring. Like playing a PS1 game that doesn't recognize the joysticks and has some some other ungodly way of shifting the camera. It's a skill bases hobby that isn't intuitive by any stretch, it just feels intuitive because we've been obsessed with the hobby since we were young and our minds were still formative.

true, my Gf at 36 never played any mario or pokemon before, it all loked so alien to her when i tried to get her involved and i realised that as we grow up with these games, most mechanics became second nature to us, that new players will either need as long to grasp or just won't be able to at all because there is so much now it can be overwhelming. next month i'm getting her her own switch lite and lets go pikachu. it seems to be the best entry into the franchise for any age.

This is why I cannot make myself be too harsh over the recent increases in tutorials and cutscenes and supposed "handholding" in Pokémon games. Some of us older hats will hate to admit it but this franchise doesn't and has never belonged to our increasingly self-centered demograph, and such things catered towards the new brood should be tolerated if not welcomed outright. @insomniacraccoon Жыл бұрын
@@gengarzilla1685 Personally IM harsh on it because theres no option to make the game harder with the addition to the increased tutorials and such. It just gets easier and easier with every generation and there's absolutely no way in game to make it harder on yourself unless you implement self imposed rules. self imposed rules that are ALSO being made inaccessible with the 'helpful features' like the permanent exp-all. Last time I struggled in a pokemon game was when they hit me with that beefed up necrozma. I'm not against a beginners mode for pokemon games. @@gengarzilla1685 While pokemon, in its current state, is not designed for the older veteran demographic, it would make more sense to at least consider them based on the actual player base. According to virtually every source I can find (including a Springer Science article of all things), the majority of pokemon players are adults. That proportion has only been going up in recent years as well. Nintendo fears that loss of young player base because their business model is "accessible games for everyone". Seeing that they're losing that young player base, they assume that the games aren't accessible enough for that age group, so they continue making them easier. Ironically, by continuing to make the game easier, they're making games that are inaccessibly easy for veterans, thus going against their business model and having to rely on nostalgia and gimmicks to keep veterans coming back. If they make the games too hard, young and new players won't understand how to play and they're breaking their business model that way. Adding a difficulty scale could be a solution, but their publishers would NOT be happy with the extra time they'd have to put in to make it difficult in a way that isn't superficial (e.g. better AI on higher difficulties as opposed to just increasing trainer levels across the board, etc.). What would you do in their shoes? Pressure from veterans to make it harder, pressure from your ideal but dwindling younger/newer audience to keep things easy and accessible, and pressure from your publishers to keep cranking out new games every couple years. There is no easy answer, but it's certainly something to think about. It's a whole mess.

This video warms my heart. I wish my mom can play games with me, but I know no matter how much I explain to her or show her how to play, she gets lost anyway and gives up, or keeps losing the game. Glad to see you made the game accessible for your mom, your mom managed to get through different paths, catch a Pokemon, and win some battles.

It really depends on the family. My mom isn't really a modern gamer for the most part, but she played a lot of Nintendo games in her youth; I remember as a kid I would often go to her N64 saves because they had 100% progress and I wanted to see what the end of the game looked like. As for more "modern" (like PS3/Wii era) games, she's also played LA Noire (and got past a section on her first try that her at the time boyfriend struggled with), the first three Uncharted Games, Mario Kart Wii, and New Super Mario Bros Wii. She's also better than me at Super Mario World, which is mildly embarrassing but also pretty cool not gonna lie.

Welcome to game design! I'm an indie dev, btw, here's some advice for next time: only have three or four types (fire, water, grass, normal) maybe a dozen pokemon that are VERY CLEARLY elementally aligned, such as the original starters. Then, a small custom town with no exits and a few battles is a good idea. Also, since this is a teaching game, I'd personally ditch any item uses, and just have the health reset at the end of a battle. Actually, you could replace the "item" option with a simple "potion" option. Apart from that, it just comes down to iterating on what you have until you're happy with it. Getting into a new player's head is basically my whole job, but I can understand how it could be hard for you (see what I mean?)

Even if it is maybe out of her comfort zone she sticks with you/the game... yeah, even if some parts are not so intuitive and easy for her like for you, she still play through it AND having a lot of fun. And that you took all the effort to create something for her so that she can follow and enjoy the game und on top doing a powerpoint and sitting with her the whole time, going through stuff over again shows a lot of sympathy and patience. I lost my mom 7 years ago. She was my best friend and she always supported my love of Pokemon. She took me to the bookstore when the first base set of cards was released to buy packs and trade with the other kids. She bought me a fossil booster box and gave me a pack every night for the 12 days of Christmas and then gave me the rest of the packs Christmas morning. She bought me all the games... Just.. everything ya know. I now make a living selling pokemon cards and I do quite well... But I'm reminded every day of how I got to where I am because of her support. Watching this video brought tears to my eyes. The love you have for your mother to go through all of this work to have her enjoy the game that we love so much... It was beautiful. Thank you for this. And thank you to your mom for being so amazing. ❤ Best video I've watched in a very long time.

I'm so torn b/c on the one hand, creating this was super impressive and super sweet. Otoh, Pokemon is a kids' game and your mom is an adult! I think that pokemon is accessible to pretty much anyone. It's true that she wouldn't immediately know the most efficient way to win, but I have faith in her ability to navigate without the arrows and extra instructions. Imo this takes away arguably the most important part of pokemon which is Vibing. Don't know the way to the various towns? Just explore! Take in the sites! Breath in the fresh digital air!

I think this is sort of like "learnt helplessness" kind of situation. Those that do not play video games don't know what they're supposed to do, and so they aren't gonna try to do anything, even if it's spellt out for them. If it's about video games, than it's fine, not like you need those. It's worse if they also stop developing and keeping up with the times because of that.
@DeathnoteBB Жыл бұрын
@@azetka4029 The thing is they’d definitely try to do anything. Ever seen someone play a game badly? They do everything except what the game wants them to.
@ajbXYZcool Жыл бұрын
@@azetka4029 Agreed. I was thinking in my head how one would make Pokémon more accessible, and one easy think would be to mod in the "effective" labels for the moves. But then we get to communicating what they need to do to progress and it gets more difficult. One could add menus, but knowing how to use them - or that they're even there to begin with - is difficult enough already. Forgetting that a certain button exists while you're coasting but then you hit a moment when you need it? At this level of skill (like negative skill), you really need someone on hand to guide you, like he did being in person. Adding a few mods with things like the type effectiveness labels (or even a label under the Pokémon sprites in battle stating their types), or fixing incorrect text. Add tutorials to the menus, so when they're getting through the control basics, and you're not around, they'll go "wait how do I do this again", and they'll know where to go to find out. Or make a document for them to review. A way I would go about it is 1. Give overview of game, something almost anyone would know before they turn on the game. For example, you'd say "Pokémon has you going around, catching monsters and battling other people, mainly to get Badges so you can challenge the Champion and be the best!". This helps to put the game actions into context. When giving help/answers to questions, avoid spoilers,but keep them within the world of the game. If the game is good enough, it should be immersive, and you're there to help bridge the gap your friend/parent/etc has that most gamers do not. Another good thing I'd do is talk to them and tell them how YOU figure out how a new game works. Like, if YOU, an experienced gamer, doesn't know how Pokémon itself works, how do you figure it out? Give them problem solving techniques, like, you're likely to talk to NPCs, so you teach them to do so. Definitely do NOT teach optimization. That's a 300 level course and they're pre-college right now. But back to the problem solving techniques - some games throw curveballs like not using the START button to open the menu - you may talk through like "I want to get to/see if there's a menu, so I press various buttons to see what they do". Teach key vocab that the individual game doesn't teach, like what Settings are, if necessary. Maybe even play the game yourself like a beginner, or have them tell you what they want the character to do, and then you'd show them the actions that you do. I've given this a lot of thought, and I likely have more but that's enough typing for now.

I'm the opposite, when I was a kid I would happily sit there for hours and hours and hours just grinding my Pokemon... But these days at age 24, I cannot be bothered AT ALL to grind, if I am forced to grind then I'll speed up the game as fast as it would go, or even maybe temporarily use an XP boosting cheat. I just do not have the time to waste grinding in these games, thankfully a good handful of the Pokemon games don't force you to grind, but others? Definitely do. When I played Heart Gold it was absurd the amount I was forced to grind to even have a chance.

A better title would have been "I took all the fun out of learning to play pokemon" Like literally none of us were born knowing how to play, learning how is literally half the fun. Going off the path is half the fun, cause it means new pokemon to find. The only thing that should have been changed is removing the Lt. Surge puzzle bc fuck that thing. This was a rom of Firered, meaning that it literally has the Teachy TV tutorial thing that is meant to teach people how to play. This isn't even beating the game, it was just "fight giovanni then go straight to the champion". 98% of the game is just gone.
