I’ve been hyped for this game since they first showed it in a direct and I got destroyed in the demo. Ordered it recently and am excited to check it out. I really liked the story stuff in the demo so I’m alright with a lot of talking. Definitely looking forward to a full review by you, keep up the great work!

I dont think that the "interactive story" element is a bad thing. Definitely not for everyone, but some of the best gaming experiences I've had have been with these types of games. Phoenix Wright is another great example

Interactive stories are fine, but jrpgs have issues sometimes with excessive exposition. There is something to be said about saying more with less words.

One effect of the story emphasis is that every story battle belongs and matters. I always understood who I was fighting and what was at stake. There were no instances of " We're walking through the woods and zombies attacked." Basically every boss you fight is a real character whom you have willfully chosen to antagonize based on your personal priorities.

There are portraits in the Battles. I don’t know why their couldn’t be in the speaking portions but oh well. There are way more characters than Tactics.

I’m currently at chapter 7, which I’ve played before through the first demo - liking the game so far, have recruited some new characters which weren’t available from previous demo. I agree with the story/dialogue comment, while it’s cool to see how the story unfolds, I do as you said wish there are more actions. Hopefully the pace will pick up, Octopath was also kind of slow at the beginning... One thing I want to praise is the characters’ combat style, each of the characters I have thus far are unique in its own way which makes you think and strategize often before entering a battle. Example, I’ve seen 3 healers now and each of them heals in a slightly different way and have their own pros & cons, you don’t feel like they are all just healers. I think that’s pretty cool.

I agree. I was hoping you could play multiple battles on the map. The map seems to always have 1 main battle and then the little side stories with no combat. It would be great if there was some random battles scattered around. The mock battles in the tavern is the same every time so it gets old.

Final Fantasy Tactics had the best story in the series, if its anything close to that I dont mind a long drawn out story, within reason of course. Also you can grind out lots of optional battles in between battles for extra power.

Games like FFT and Tactics Ogre like to throw the player into the thick of things right from the get-go, narratively speaking, with lots history and lore packed away into their appendices to catch you up to speed. Triangle Strategy, while it _does_ have an appendix for you to dig through, spends its first 10 or so hours *painstakingly* establishing the different kingdoms, cultures and histories, along with literally dozens of characters and various webs of intrigue. Also yes, having access mock battles is a blessing :3

There are random skirmish battles you can do after the first few hrs of the game so you can do some back to back battles if you want. Agree that in certain parts this game is way too dialogue heavy though.

The mock battles? The problem with those is they are not random. Its the same thing over and over. I wish they added something that would at least shuffle some levels around.

Octopath was great, but goddamn, did it start to rely TOO MUCH on grinding levels towards the end to pad out the length (I think I had like 140 hours by the time I fought the “true final boss” and got the secret ending).

@@Relisoc4 You’re right, but I seem to remember each new chapter in the 8 separate characters’ story arcs being level-gated (ie: you must be LEVEL XX to start Primrose’s Act 2, 3, 4, etc) unless I’m just completely misremembering the game.

Okay. So I just played the demo (first 3 chapters)… can anyone tell me if the pace picks up? The writing is bad in my opinion. And I really just want to play the game. But right now, it feels like for every hour of dialogue, I get 15 minutes of gameplay. Does that flip at any point?

one of the biggest criticism for me and many other people on Octopath traveler was the low quality over arcing story, almost no character interactions, poor character development and just cliché characters.. basically just overall lacking in the good story department in general. It seems that the developers must of noticed this criticism as well and decided to go in the extreme opposite direction making triangle strategy 80% story and dialog and less gameplay and combat? Maybe if they make a third game we'll get that perfect balanced game that we're looking for.

I'm happy they didn't just re-do FF Tactics, this game reminds me more of the, imo, far better PS1 era Tactics game, Vandal Hearts, where each character is tied to a specific class type, and despite this game having less customization, I love that each character is a specific class as it gives them all their own personality and place in the story. I agree, this game has a lot more talking than battling, but the battles and circumstances that push you to said battles are top-notch. I get it isn't going to be for everyone, but man this scratched a long time itch I have had personally. Good video dude.

I'm about 25 hours into the game and so far I'm just having a blast. The plot, characters, combat and art style is so endearing. I also like the pacing of this game specially after some of the major battles. The dialogue, focus on story progression and some additional side character content is a nice break. Lastly the choices that you make in this game is so impactful it literally shapes on how the narrative will play out, in which I understand is a bit overwhelming for some players but to me just adds a lot of value on the replayability department. A day 1 buy that's so so worth and I'm really excited for what's to come since they're porting Front Mission 1 and 2 on the switch!

Everything he said was correct. Still I really enjoy the story, and this style is my Jam. It is nice in handheld mode to enjoy, and take time with at tv. I find slower games to work better there because faster action demands immediate attention. It really does have alot of Final Fantasy tactics feel to it, but still being its own thing. I love it.

I just wish they redid FFTACTICS. There is way too much story. I love the game play but hate all the story. Tactics just threw you in and let you build your won unique party. You loved your team members because they are the ones you used and relied on. This game tells you which characters to like with limited customization

I love the game very much. Vandal Hearts was the first TRPG I ever played and Final Fantasy Tactics is my favorite game ever, and TS gives me vibes from both. I do agree the story exposition can feel a little much at times, but overall don't mind because I like the story quite a bit My biggest complaint I guess would be that the overworld is essentially useless and having a list rather the moving your arrow around would have been a better implementation. Voice acting is decent, but some of the choices are vexing. Why does Patriatte sound like a bored 20 year old? Why does Cordelia sound high? And worst of all I HATE Narves voice (he is a great unit though) but a 13 year old boy shouldn't sound like a little girl overall 80% of the voices are great though

I can say I am two hours in and had one battle. That was about 15 minutes in. After that. Oh my sweet lord. cut scene after cut scene after cut-scene. No exaggeration if I said i've had 20 or 30 loading screens and some very mediocre plot and character development in that time. I read a lot - I love reading. I spend a fortune on books (and book cases, and Audible subscription and extra Audible credits often) I love a good story. But when I buy a game I want to ACTUALLY PLAY THE GAME The whole time I've "played" this game so far my mind has been saying to myself "Why don't I read a decent book - or play a game that let's me ACTUALLY PLAY the game...instead of doing whatever the hell this is"

This is my concern as well, though I will say the 6 fights in 10 hours sounds like an exaggeration. Others say they had one or two battles for every couple of hours of play; however, that was not my experience at all with the demo (I have yet to buy the full game). I beat the demo in about 3 hours and had, I believe, 5 fights. The fights consisted of three battles that moved the main story forward and two mock-battles (think of these as optional side quests). The rest of my experience was the main story arch and several optional cutscenes. Considering this: You could skip over the optional cutscenes and play the additional mock-battles. This, I feel, makes the gameplay-to-story ratio a little more palatable. However, I will say that I was a bit turned off at the amount of text and story telling. I acknowledge many will love it, but I enjoyed how FFT interwove dialogue and story telling into the battles and wish that this game did the same (again, I can only comment on the demo). Overall: I wanted a game that was a more, pure tactical experience and played a demo that was mostly story telling. I was set to buy this game at release but, upon further reflection, have decided to wait for a sale.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance is why I bought this game. I spent a lot of time on it growing up. I’m growing to like this game, but the cut scenes and all the talking I need to do are just too much. I don’t know who at Square Enix thought making the most dialogue heavy game in existence a good idea… I’m only a few hours in, and I’m in a love-hate relationship with it. There are too many characters in it, too. I’ve started to skip parts by fast-forwarding. I don’t like the exploration mode because it’s not really climactic. I want more battles like in FFT.

The thing I’ve heard is that the dialog here is a lot useless stuff like “that’s so brave!” , “to bravery!”, and tons it. Tactics at least has dialog that was good for the progressing the story. But also, if it was an issue in tactics, it shouldn’t be repeated in a game ~25 years later

It seems like a lot of games have more and more dialogue these days. Wether voiced or unvoiced it can be a lot. It can take away from gameplay. I’m still in the beginning of this game. I’m be heard from people who played 60+ hrs and they say it opens up later for much more combat and leveling up your characters. So don’t worry about that. But yes in the beginning it’ll feel like the whole game of Horizon ForBiden West or Uncharted where your literally watching people talk and not playing much. Lol!

Lol Nice underhanded comment to undermine the greatness of Sony. Sony exclusives dominate the gaming landscape whether you like it or not. First off...story takes a backseat to gameplay in the Horizon games. Second, Uncharted is one of the greatest series ever made.

I can tell by your comment you love Sony and are a fan that’s fine but I own all systems including PC and have played a lot of games over the years. Horizon does a lot of talking and I couldn’t stand it to the point I skilled most of it. I felt better for it too. Lol!

I play all manner of games on all manner of systems, so no....I'm not just a fan of Sony.... I own a PS2, PS3, PS4, PS5, Gamecube, Wii, Wii U, Switch, Xbox 360, Xbox Series X, a NES mini, SNES mini, Turbografx mini, Genesis mini and I have a PC with an RTX 2080 in it. Just so you know.

Love the graphics, mostly liked the mechanics... Hated the story... Hated the limited and lackluster quantity of equipment... Basically the more I played the more I hated this game was not Final Fantasy Tactics... :/ Not saying the game is bad at all, Im just saying that having played games like FFT before, this game feels so restricted and limited... The mental battles makes no sense! How do you get money and experience and level up on "mental battles"? Why all characters are so restricted and limited? Anyway... The game is fun, it looks beautiful... But after the three endings I won't be playing this game anymore... On the other hand I finished Final Fantasy Tactics more than 10 times... And would still buy it in a heartbeat if it appears in the eShop :/

So the Kingdoms are hyper exaggerated or all zealot level of their main characteristic. That is very JRPG, actually, though not what you'd find in the ones that took themselves seriously (Tactics Ogre, FF Tactics). The thing about those classics of the genre was the writer. He had a firm grasp on what he wanted to convey in the setting and scenario pacing. The aim was to convey that antiquity atmosphere down to the manner of speech, which admittedly only was in the English as the Japanese can no longer speak or understand their form. I'll be hopeful that this achieves the same, but from my intuition in seeing the characters, detecting archetypes, I expect it to follow Octopath Traveler and not those latter games.
