Per the clients request, I took the diamond out of one ring and reset it in a vintage ring mounting. The vintage ring also needed new tips and a new shank.

Video Description: A client wanted to use the diamond from one ring and transfer it to another. I first cut away the prongs from the first ring to free the stone. I then recut the seats in the vintage ring and set the diamond in. After the diamond was set in place, I retipped the 4 center prongs with the diamond in place. After the tips were added I filed them down to match. The vintage ring also needed some work done on the shank as it was incredibly thin and needed to be build up. I cut off the old shank and melted it down with some fresh yellow gold grain. I then poured the melt into an ingot mold and ran the ingot through the rolling mill. After I achieved the correct size for the new shank, I bent the gold into shape and soldered the new shank on the ring. After the new shank was added to the vintage engagement ring, I filed and blended the gold.

That second ring looks so like my engagement ring! It was my husband’s grandmothers circa 1945 and I’ve have the band repaired a few times so the original engraving isn’t complete anymore unfortunately. My jeweler told me I’d need to have the setting “built up” or the stones reset at some point because it’s getting worn down. The process was so cool to watch- thank you!

Today I searched Google for jewellery repairers in my area and this evening your video popped up 🧐 🤔 Your work is fascinating! New subscriber here :) The reason I was searching was because I lost a diamond out of my ring two weeks ago, I noticed it missing the morning after I had put my Christmas tree up. This morning I dismantled my Christmas tree. I shook the life out of the tree and what did I find on the floor, the diamond! Yay! It had been in the tree all along! I just knew it would be there! Now to get it re-set but I’m now wondering how much it will cost me lol

As a bench jeweler myself I always think it's kind of funny when a customer wants to watch you do something to their jewelry. So much of the repair process can look destructive to someone who doesn't know what's happening. I do love seeing their reactions once you're done though!

Wonderful video - as always. I have a few questions/ observations: - I had no idea you could be this "rough" with diamonds, putting direct heat onto them, etc. How do you douse the ring if you had to do that? I guess the sudden temperature change could damage the stone? Do you even HAVE to douse the ring for the setting manipulations you did? - How and how often do you collect the shavings / filings? Can you reuse them? - when melting the gold in the crucible, was that real time or sped up? Does gold really melt this fast? - what does the brief warming of the mould opening do? Doesn't it cool back down while you melt the gold? How long does the metal cool in there until you can take it out with bare fingers? Your work is so very interesting, thank you for making these awesome videos!

Thanks so much for watching and I meant to reply earlier. - Diamonds are very scratch resistant as they are 10/10 on the hardness scale. It is possible for them to scorch but only if an incredible amount of heat is used. During my training I learned the proper threshold. - I collect shavings/filings every single day! I can't use them in their raw state but I have them all refined about once a year. - Melting gold is actually pretty quick, but I do believe I sped it up to like 125% for the video. -I didn't show the entire warming process on the video. I usually with hold a torch on it for a lot longer but for the sake of the video just showed the little clip. The mold will retain some heat which allows the gold to flow and drop in with less resistance. It usually cools within 5 minutes! Thanks again for watching and all the great questions! :)

Was a nice video to see. Many vids out there of glorious engagement rings being made, but this is the type of stuff jewelers do more of. I also like to leave prongs beefier like that. Time goes by fast and people do not come in for ring repairs often enough. Having more meat around the diamond ensures the customer can beat it up for longer.

Hey Anthony, thanks for watching! In the case of heat sensitive stones, you would build up the prongs first without the stone set. Diamonds are nice because it’s easy to build tips on top of a stone, a little more difficult to do it with no stone set, but possible!
