As a Brit, I’m ashamed at what has happened to our society. The biggest issue of all is the sheer incompetence and corruption of our government and public institutions, all of which has been exacerbated by austerity and Brexit. For these reasons I cannot wait to move to Norway, everyone thinks I’m mad but it’s probably the most sensible decision I’ve made. Your videos Anna reaffirm my decision so a big thank you for sharing them with us and I hope you get your return sorted- we only have one life, so be where your heart wants you to be, big love x

In Norway we got something called "Tvungen lønnsnemd" (forced wage board) meaning if a strike can result in danger of lives , health or security the government will step in and stop the strike. So medical strikes are very rare and if they happen it will most likely end in forced wage board very fast.

people i know in UK said the same, haven't gotten a raise in years, but costs are up by an insane amount, so they're essentially poorer. Then I see headlines like "libraries closing", "pubs disappearing", "rise in knife crime", "NHS struggling" or how other public services are being squeezed, the whole country just gives off a sense of being in general decay.

I have always enjoyed visiting London, but it also seemed that it would be difficult to live there, at least long term. For what it's worth, health care is much more expensive here in the US, and statistics show that the overall quality is no better. Maybe the digital nomad life would be right for you, given your love of travel, food and new cultures, and your skills at communication. Good luck!

Hearing your affection for Norway warms my Norwegian heart! And your frustration with all the needless small talk was nothing short of great - There's a Norwegian in you alright!😂 12:15 As for the strikes in the public sector, they do happen in Norway too, even in healthcare back in 2021 with the nurses. But they're more often than not resolved quickly. The last major strike here in Norway was actually part of the reason why we got a raise to combat the inflation, rise in gas and energy prices etc. But I think there were mainly workers in the private sector that went on strike for that one.
@thefowlyetti2
@thefowlyetti2 Жыл бұрын
Norway is far richer per capita due to the immense oil wealth. That's why there aren't the same problems with strikes and wages, and no problems with energy prices. Also, its not ideal to compare a country to a city when making comparisons.
@jeschinstad
@jeschinstad Жыл бұрын
We don't depend much on oil and gas in Norway since we have renewable energy. As for our moderation in wages, it's caused by respect for our exporting industries. They negotiate salaries first and then other groups negotiate later. We all understand that we need our export industries to remain competitive and that greed will hurt us all.
@0That_Guy0

A bunch of businesses went bankrupt here in Norway thanks to the energy prices, so I wouldn't go as far as saying we have "no problems with energy prices". And people with lower income struggle a lot now, as the energy prices are still high, the rent on loans increases, gasoline prices are high, food prices are still going up - There are a lot of people struggling economically in Norway now, but you don't read much about it.
@jeschinstad
@jeschinstad Жыл бұрын
@@0That_Guy0You cant complain about this. We have the lowest interest on loan in the world, electricity is heavily subsidized and low income households receive extra allowance. We are not unaffected, but we struggle far less than most people in the world. In fact, the lowest income households are better off now than before the pandemic.

Think we would like to welcome you back to Norway. Prices have increased here too, but nothing close to elsewhere in Europe. Today we have had 17 hours of free energy / electricity. There are an incredible number of vacant jobs in Norway for those with and without education - I think. The salary increase has been approx. 5.3% The price increase is calculated at 4.9% and pensioners have received from 6.4 - 8.15% increase. Lower tax for pensioners who have earned the least and increased child support. Not bad. You also get 90% back if the electricity price goes over 0.055 Euro/kwh

A bit of context to nuance this is that Norway's currency has collapsed, and buying things from abroad, including Sweden, is very expensive. This usually happens during times of global uncertainty, and it always bounces back (people eventually remember that we have that huge rainy day fund) but for now it sucks, especially for anyone wanting to travel. And while the government increases wages to combat price hikes, the banks keep increasing interest rates to fight inflation (explicitly by trying to reduce purchacing power for Norwegians) and the two strategies seem at odds with each other. It's useful to get the context of how things could be much worse, like in England post-Brexit, but it's a relative downturn for Norway as well right now

Hey Anna! I couldn't agree more, especially with points 1-4! In terms of hiking, I could expand that to the whole concept of space. There's no such thing in the UK and even if you go to a forest, you get that sense of a human-maintained forest, if you know what I mean. Wild and isolated nature - a challenge to find, and around London - probably simply non-existent. 😆 I also relate so much to the small talk. Any time I see my neighbour, I can't simply greet him and get into my car, I always have to take into account a two-minute interrogation. Don't get me wrong, he's kind but a bit tiring. I kind of feel bad for British people. Small talk is so ingrained in them that even though I often see they don't feel like doing it, they simply cannot imagine not doing it. It's part of the politeness package they get installed when they're small. On, a separate note, I was wondering if you've got a video on how did you happen to move to Norway in the first place? Was moving there your first visit? Was it related to work or a random choice that you fell in love with? If not, I'd love to see a video on that! Thanks for the great content, I do love your videos on Nordic countries and I'll admit I'm secretly hoping for some more content on Sweden 😉as it's my dream country to visit. However, I've been to Norway and I loved it sooo much as well. How does one choose between these two countries anyway? 😄

Really? You do realise all those forests in Norway are ecologically sanitised plantation forestry, right? They look "green" from a distance. Did you notice the lack of old trees in Norway's landscape too? Creepy. Very little respect for living nature. Remember Freya, the walrus? The unnecessary slaughter or whales and wolves? Farmed salmon? There are so many natural places to visit in Britain, but, yes, it is among the most densely populated in places. You just need to know where to find them. Some London parks have got more ecology than a typical forest in Norway, ironically.

A lot changed Anna. I was made redundant from my job in Vienna in February 2020 & came back to the UK temporarily with the intention to move back to Europe. That did not hapoen for obvious reasons. I now have another job in my profession but noticed salaries have dtopped a lot. Most of the reason is the "B" word not the "P" word. This country has destroyed itself from within by believing a lie from politicians. Also i think England does not care about socio/economic life whereas Europe does. Norway is beautiful but had also has a social fund to help out. England on the other hand just rips you off to executive bonus & pay. Disgusting to say the least. I am now looking at leaving with things improving again & my qualifications are transferable. I am also fully registered to live & work in Europe post Brexit

If you think London is noisy, wait until you visit a Mediterranean city, or worse, a middle eastern city, or a big Asian city (India, for example) . London is like a museum in comparison. But I agree with you, the UK as a whole is not a good place to live in at the moment. Brexit has crashed the economy. The quality of life is not as good as some other European cities. However, instead of returning to Norway, what about moving to a different nice and fun city to live in? If it was up to me, in the first place I'd consider Sydney and Melbourne. In the second place I'd consider Lisbon, Madrid, Rome and Milan. Rome would be even noisier than London, but way more fun... you wouldn't mind the noise.

Of course you pay for the "free" healthcare in Norway. I just imagine it's not seperately identified in your taxes, that's all.

GB should stop using their healthcare and teaching staff and the working staff for granted without any increase or change in pay or workload, if they can’t hire or can’t change the pay, who’s gonna work? If it can happen at a private company where you work then it can happen anywhere. Labour court won’t give justice for extended periods of time. Inflation for sure is increasing but when you talked about your electricity bill going up like that in like 5-6 months that just made everyone feel it. It’s high time you either move to Norway again or a cheaper place in England.

Anna, I kept watching this video as if I were watching a train wreck. You obviously are living in a beautiful apartment in the most fascinating city on earth. To keep comparing it to your home town in a negative way I think is just wrong! Also unfair to London. London has beautiful people architecture history and the Beatles! I have been to London several times and if I could I would move there at the drop of a dime. Complaining about hiking? Or just bragging that you hike in Norway. Please! To many choices, that’s a bad thing? Really! Three century old train (rail) stations. I could go on forever. Dorthy maybe it’s time you klick your ruby red timberlands and wake up back in Norway!

How are your personal opinions and interests in London as a city any more valid than hers, exactly? She even brings up objective facts about the city. And you apparently have the experience of a visitor, not a long term citizen. "The most fascinating city on Earth" - That's highly debatable, and likely not even possible to conclude objectively one way or another, because it's very subjective and dependent on your personal interests. I certainly disagree with your statement. "Most beautiful architecture" - Again, subjective. The Beatles do in no way define London as a city, and their relevance is decreasing every year. And what if someone doesn't care much for architecture, history or music, how can you argue those as selling points? You haven't even countered a single point she brought up in the video, other than throwing crap about her joy for hiking, what the hell? If you enjoy a more quiet environment, clean and high quality tap water, clean air, close proximity outdoor activities such as hiking, lower costs of living - London is obviously not for you. Arguing against that with old train stations and architecture makes no sense.

We norwegians remember VERY CLEARLY the video you made BEFORE you left Norway when you thought you were going to leave Norway for good and mocked us, our traditions and our customs mercilessly. You even mocked the nature, I believe. The only way WE (the norwegians) will forgive you is if you go out on a date with me. I speak on behalf of ALL norwegians and this is the ONLY way we can give you forgiveness for your sins 😁!
