Remote places have the effect on people that they can reflect on their lives and find something new. In some ways Lapland is a place where visitors can step out of old life and society. And still they are or can become part of local society, which can be even more close than in towns and cities, if you become part of it and don't be just a tourist.

It depends how well you are dressed, if you need the hat or not. And what you do. When I was in the army, I was in winter Lapland and there was -43C temperature, I was much of the time without hat and gloves. I was building phonelines in the forest, and had enough good clothes on me, so hat was too much, and I needed bare fingers to use tools and make wire connections. We were outside two nights and days before we got into a tent: I couldn't get boots out from my feet, because the felt inside my boots were frozen solid of the sweat moisture. Sweating is an enemy also, so you need to take care you aren't sweating too much.
