I can’t imagine, living in a place for five years, and not learning the local language, especially a romance language. It’s not like trying to learn Vietnamese, or some other difficult tonal language.

some people have a more difficult time learning languages then others. for example I'm intermediate in Spanish and also upper beginner in Korean, while my bf can barely remeber the words "I want = Yo quiero and I need = yo necesito" in Spanish. It just takes a lot of time and when ur working and enjoying life it just gets pushed to the side.

It depends if she’s friends with the locals or not. If it’s just her and whoever she stays with, it can be hard. Spanish is not regular Spanish too, it’s Puerto Rican Spanish.

I moved here less than a month ago. The people have been really friendly. I have met several locals and expats that have basically been like “here is my cell, if you need anything at all don’t hesitate to call”. A couple local guys I met at Walmart helped me for a half hour trying to lay a tax bill, my new neighbor (from Canada) gave my family a golf cart tour. Their are a ton to entrepreneurs too. There are some challenges though. Power grid is spotty, driveling rules are not really enforced . I’m really enjoying it and looking forward to leaning the language.

I agree. I left Miami, Fl and moved to Patillas, PR a year ago. I am so happy I did. The culture and people are so amazing. Thankfully, I speak Spanish. I am of Cuban decent so I feel very at home. I was a Public School teacher in Miami and because of Covid chose to change careers. It wasn’t easy but I finally was able to find a good job in the health insurance industry. Well I'm Puerto Rican raised in the USA but I now live on the island. So yes San Juan is expensive but rent outside of San Juan is Not. Even home prices are not bad outside of the capital of San Juan. I have a house Beach view maybe a 5 minute walk to the beach. It's like being on vacation every day. I love it here

I’m looking forward to making PR my home again, my family and I used to live in Fajardo,Ceiba and Humacao in the 90s , and I just visited as well, OMG the manyyy beaches and rainforest are my favorite!! ..there is no place like it! And Americans leaving the states in order to avoid paying their fair share of taxes, flee to Puerto Rico in order to keepntheir wealth, 4% of taxes, not paying taxes in Capital gains is ludacrist. Law 20-22 now law 60 is not offered to local puerto ricans, and the ones that are benefiting from it dont creates jobs, dont really live in the island yet enjoy those tax breaks. For economic progress to be relevant in Puerto Rico, all this outside investors should pay their fair share ofbtaxes, while you pay 4% the average Puerto Rican pay 30 to 33 % of taxes on starvation wages. A policy I'd like to see implemented in PR and other places experiencing gentrification: If you invest in residential or commercial real estate as a business, 20% of those properties are dedicated to workforce/affordable housing. You can invest, but not at the expense of native islanders. There needs to be a balance. If you're going to invest, do it in all areas and consider your impact on the culture and people. Puerto Rico isn't Puerto Rico without the natives. They deserve our investment and support in their economy on all fronts.

I’m not meaning this as a critique or to show her up (Mariah is amazing)…but I lived in Mexico for a year and returned stateside fluent in Spanish. It’s all about engagement…getting out of our comfort zones. I’d be in cafes for hours with Spanish-speakers painstakingly tying to understand and be understood. And then blam 💥…I had a breakthrough. 😊

Round trip plane ticket from where i am is $300-400, an airbnb in south island ranges from $100-150/night, the local food and everything (outside of hotspots) are cheaper AND just better, you can definitely make it work

This is an EXCELLENT video thank u. Im super excited hearing you talk about the tax credits specific for tourism businesses as I am considering moving to PR to run my wellness travel business. The speaking spanish thing reminds me of living in Tulum in a remote part of the jungle, I literally HAD to learn basic Spanish haha because I couldn't operate, I even had to teach a yoga class in Spanish - you can imagine how that was LOL. I know exactly what you mean. I've been to Puerto Rico ten times, and every time I did not want to leave to go back to the States. Though my experience each time I went there was that things could be quite inexpensive, provided you're more willing to live like a local and shop at market stalls instead of super markets, and also utilize reputable street food stands for food instead of expensive touristy restaurants. That's not as easy in the San Juan metro area, or on the smaller islands, but there are places where a relatively low cost of living can be had. Yes, island life is such a cool vibe and let's you feel like every single day is a vacation. I currently reside in Bali, which is another awesome island setting. But, I do look forward to getting back to the islands of Puerto Rico soon for another visit, most especially Culebra (though yes, it is expensive). Thinking about it makes me wonder if Playa Zoni still has nobody on it, leaving it all to myself to take in that stunning environment.

I grew up on the south coast of Puerto Rico, I was talking the other day with someone and I said exactly the same 'I never felt like going on vacation away from my town', we had it all. Definitely, you must learn spanish. The fear in PR comes thru the local news, they show 95% all kinds of crimes and they forget the positive news around the island. Since 26 years I moved to Switzerland, it is amazing here, but I miss my island. I wish, we could get off politics and corruption. There is a huge potential to do really better. A&E = Attitude and Expectations - with the right attitude and expectations - It is awesome - just don't worry about the small things - just take in all the beaty and you will feel so blessed. I went to high school many years ago at the Naval Base in Ceiba (Roosevelt Roads) and have visited the island many times, seeing the ups and downs over the years, two things that have never changed - the incredible people and beaty of the island. 3 years ago, I purchased a condo at Isleta Marina in Fajardo (which I stay at several times a year) with the intent on moving back and starting a Redevelopment Company. I have just sold my business here in Wisconsin :) and in the process of moving to the island with the intent to increase tourism and share the islands beauty and culture with all. If you want to experience the fear of the Puertoricans, you need to live or hangout right in the center of for example..Bayamon😂 where I grew up. The problem with PR is the government, which is beholden to the Democrats in Washington. And the Communists who want our island to fail. Not true. Puerto Rican speech IS Spanish. The verbs are congugated the same and the adverbs, adjectives, are the same. The local "fast slang" is different from the "fast slang" in other places (definitely true of the English spoken in different US cities.) Lots of words might be used differently, and the pronunciation differs from country to country ALL over latinamerica (and even in Spain).

I am from and have lived in PR most of my life and the attitudes you describe apply also to locals, many people here complain constantly, live afraid, do not go out much, and then others like myself do realize we live in a fun, beautiful, and safe place. I try to surround myself with people who have the same attitude, usually, the people who think that way have done some traveling and can compare. Regarding the food, that you avoided, or tried to, I love the food, it takes time to find everything rare, cheap, international, etc.. but I do understand we lack diversity when compared to big cities, we only have like 3 Indians, and this, no Filipino or Georgian, Mexican, arab and greek are more expensive and formal than in the states, etc..

Mariah, you have a wonderful attitude and that's your best asset for happiness in PR. That attitude is what made my dad settle here in the 1940's and mary my mom, a Puerto Rican. The best way to learn the lingo is via friendships with those whom have been raised here and educated in both places; the fully bilinguals. At any rate, your humility goes a long way towards ingratiating with anyone on the island. And that's more important.

A lot of Puertoricans speak English, most of the times we don’t talk to you in English because we want you to learn our language. It’s not thst hard girl. I started learning English two years ago, I was able to understand a lot of it but couldn’t communicate. You know how I learned fast? Working as a Nanny for an American family. You need to talk the language every day. So yes you can do it. The American momma that I work for always thinks local people are talking shit about her when in reality they look at her a lot bc she’s gorgeous and they compliment her but she thinks otherwise bc she doesn’t know Spanish. Something that pisses me off about Americans is that they think they don’t have to learn other languages even if you go to a different country. You want everyone to speak in English and that’s not fair. You are the one who moved here, the least you could do is learn our language. Trust me everything will be easier and you will be improving yourself by knowing more than one language.

This cute young woman needs to get a SPanish speaking boyfriend. Maybe he does speak some English, but she should insist he speak to her in Spanish. She also might spend a few hours a week taking classes to learn the 8 most used verbs and how to conjugate them. To practice without embarrassment, speaking to small children is great practice, and they will never criticize, and both speakers will use short, simple sentences. She also might want to develop a few standard phrases in Spanish to use in moments of confusion, spoken while smiling, to request the person speak more slowly (Ay, perdón, más despacito, por favor?) , or to ask for a word, (Por favor, cómo se dice washing machine ?) and she should repeat to almost everyone she meets, "¡Puerto Rico me encanta!", which does seem to be true.

I moved to Mayagüez in 2019. I can live cheaper in Puerto Rico than the states. I could show you how. My family is from Carolina. Very expensive. Viva Boriquas!

From all the reviews I've seen and read on YT, your's is the most honest and concise abt what it takes to move and live in Puerto Rico! Let me tell you I lived in California during my Navy commitment and I always believed El Monte/West Covina was God's country!!! Indeed PR is motherland...unfortunately, there are bad apples that rot our society and the lack of a true attention to detail and laziness in the Puertorican mentality drags the quality of life even further! That's something that every Puertorican that has lived away from PR could attest as a fact! As the refran says: Despierta Boricua, y ponte a trabajar! 💪🤑💕🇵🇷

I've been here over 4 years from San Diego and will not go back. Quality of life has improved post-pandemic. Yes, Puerto Rico, like the states during the Pandemic and Hurricane Maria, caused many problems they were starting to overcome. People are friendly in general. Crime yes some petty crime but violent crime is insignificant. Street safety in San Juan is very safe, However, like any place in the world, take precautions. My friends just moved here from Hawaii and settled near Arecibo. The home price is 167,00 dollars 200 feet from the beach. Now they homeschool, like nature, and do not like city urban life. So if you want the best convenient places you will pay. If you are outside the San Juan Metropolitan area home prices are way cheaper than the States. I love Puerto Rico, learned Spanish, and never had any experience like any resentment or hostility.Remember I understand Spanish and know what they saying.

Currently in the US inland and I would move permanently to PR in a heartbeat things permitting, good or bad is going to happen anywhere. I was in Fl a few yrs ago parked at a shopping strip when a retiree pulled into the parking next to me firmly brushing into my car with her car I'm standing there waiting for her to pull in, its not a huge dent just some scratches so I said lady you hit my car she smiling politely says no I didn't I say yes you did I'm standing right here two feet away she just has a big smile 4 seconds later I just say its ok don't worry about it she just said thank you and we went on our different ways. Spanish is Very easy to learn you just have to want too which means if you don't know what a word translates too asking someone.. Here's the thing learn from a Spanish Speakier how to correctly pronounce the vowels (the sound is firm and short meaning cut off at the end) the letter O is not pronounced ow its pronounced oh/.. You will notice with the accent that at times the S at the end of a word may be skipped but not so much there is a breath in its place. Spanish is so easy I literally could teach someone in two weeks as I have with coworkers so you could as well if you try daily at a plaza or anywhere the worst that could happen is that they may think wow I guess she really wants to learn

I know exactly what you mean by the energy of the island. I felt it when I flew to Hawaii and the entire time I was there. I went to PR last week for the first time and it had that very same feeling. I love the ocean so much and am strongly considering moving to PR. I took French for 4 years and Spanish for 1, and worked in Spanish speaking settings for a long time so I think I would know enough to get around. But anyway yep, I totally get what you mean by the importance of beautiful surroundings. It just makes you appreciate the planet even more than usual.

Generally speaking, Mariah gets a lot of things right. However, there is so much more to Puerto Rico, that she has yet to experience and learn about from Puertoricans. First of which, is the fact, that we are extremely, if not more than proud about our heritage, customs, and flag. Included, is our fierce desire, mostly on the island for non-Puertoricans, to at least make an attempt to speak with us in our language. Despite the fact, that so many, especially in the San Juan area speak and understand English fluently. Bearing in mind that perhaps the viejitas and viejitos (oldsters), speak less English in general. Additionally, because Mariah is entrepreneurially minded, a course in business Spanish along with one in conversational Spanish, would serve her tremendously. Also, when meeting true island PR's, attempt to recognize that they think and act like islanders, and not to customary common clay of PR identifying mainlanders, she may have met in the US, or will meet on the island. In large measure, our island people are more humble and self-effacing, than US PRs. But no less proud, perhaps more "machista" than American men. Also, because Mariah is young and attractive. She MUST always be weary of her surroundings and people she meets. Judging from her description of home dwelling. These are important, as it may make her a target for male and female undesirables, she can and will run into. If possible. Try to meet PRs you can become friendly with, that share your perspectives and goals. Good Luck in PR. And remember, as you love PR, PR will love you back...mi Isla del Encanto.

I really appreciate your positive attitude! Firstly, I feel ashamed for those ignorant Boricuas, but if you take care of yourself, everything will be fine. Secondly, I agree that attitude is everything. I'm currently serving in the US Army, and many soldiers complain about everything and everywhere. However, I believe that your point of view is what makes the real difference. Thank you for your love for my beloved island. I miss that feeling of being on vacation all the time. One day, I'll be back for sure.
