Hi! Welcome to Florida! I just wanted to point out that in Florida we have sales tax (the same as VAT) and a 1200 apartment would be available but in a very bad area or a smaller town. I pay 712 a pay period for health insurance (thats 8544) a year plus i get a bill in the mail for most services. Guns very by location or state. I live in the suburbs, and we have had several shootings in our local mall. Just sharing a long time Florida residents perspective ❤

Average rent for a 1 bdr in Florida is $1600/month. Rent is higher than that average in Tampa and over $2000/ month in Fort Lauderdale and Miami, so really, not much different than the UK. Also, public transportation in Florida is a joke.

I’m from California so I was surprised how cheap the health insurance, transportation, and rent is on your list. My health insurance and average rent is double the amount you listed where I live. I share a car with my husband but I know for a fact that it costs more than $333 a month when you include car payments, insurance, gas, and servicing. For me, living in a country with free healthcare, better transportation, and stricter gun laws seems worth it for many. We wait for months to be seen by doctors AND still pay an astronomical amount for treatment and insurance while getting meh care or doctors who are so overworked that they don’t really even look at you. Having to drive everywhere sucks. The food, weather, and places to see are great depending on where you live. Entrepreneurship is worth it in the U.S. if you are willing to work an 8-8 and grind it out for a decade or so but 95% of people just want to enjoy life and their weekends with loved ones. It’s a path, but not for everyone 😅 My family and my husband’s chose that route and are now able to enjoy their lives, but I cannot say the same for my friends who were not so fortunate. I’m glad to hear people have been positive to you immigrating here. My sis and I were born in the U.S. and had many racist comments thrown at us. With Trump coming in, I fear there will be more racism, higher costs of living for the majority, more wealth to billionaires, and the green spaces and blue sky that make it worth it living here will no longer be there for my future children and children to come to experience. Thank you for sharing your perspective.
@K1111A6 күн бұрын
More minority people voted for Trump, so there’s that. There are definitely some racist people on both sides, but Trump himself isn’t racist, he has many many people of color on his team. His number one concern is the economy and making things more affordable for the average income American. It will never work to hugely tax millionaires because they are the ones who fund entrepreneurs and start up businesses. With huge taxing they won’t be able to, and we will literally lose small businesses. Do you have any idea how many chemicals are sprayed in California skies every day from chem trails? And how many toxic chemicals are in your food? RFKjr is working on changing that, and putting the right to vaccinate children in the parents hands, as it should be. The very biased mainstream media has taught people to hate and fear the other side, without actually teaching anyone what Trumps policies and agendas are. And before anyone mentions women’s rights, look up his policies about them. The only abortions he is against are late term ones, in the 7-9th month. He has said he will never support, and will in fact veto, any attempt to ban abortion nationwide. He wants to leave it up to the states, meaning the people, as it should be. He just hired the second most powerful person in the White House, and it’s a woman. Kamala says she is for women’s rights but makes everyone on her team get the COVID vax, that is not my body, my choice.

I'm from California too, and now an immigrant in France. My cost of living is MUCH lower here in France, unfortunately salaries are lower here in France, but my mortgage is less here, I don't need a car so I don't have one, and transit doesn't cost much either, my health insurance is extremely cheap here in France and I even have top-up insurance to cover the extra that the national insurance doesn't fully cover and the top-up insurance it cheap too. Food is cheaper here but the variety is significantly lacking compared to California, that is one thing I really miss about NorCal, the variety of food, and I'm talking fruits and veggies mostly. As for gun violence..... I graduated from high school the year before Columbine, so I never experienced anything like that, but I grew up in an area with a LOT of gang violence, at the time, gang activity is not the same now as it was in the 90s, anyways, I knew many people that dies from direct or indirect gang related gun violence, more than I should've, I would hear gun shots almost every night, and at least once a week the police would fly by in helicopters using spot lights in my neighborhood.

As an American, I'll never understand why people come here for a "better life." This is a capitalist country above everything else, so if your sole purpose for moving here is to make a lot of money, then I guess you'll be happy if you manage to find success. However, the quality of life here simply doesn't compare to that in other developed countries. Now with Trump in office, you'll truly see America for what it is. It's the land of opportunity for the rich, but not for anyone else. Also, I'm not sure where you got your figures on health insurance and rent. A one-bedroom apartment in Florida is not easy to find. The average rent is over $1,800 near major cities. If you live far from Miami, in a lesser-known area, you might find a one-bedroom for that price, but it won't be in a nice neighborhood. Health insurance is extremely expensive, as are homeowner and car insurance. I hope everything works out for you, but I'd be very worried living in a toxic red state like Florida and being in the country on a visa during Trump's presidency. I don't think you understand what's coming in January. Be careful and stay safe out there.

Lower taxes aren't too bad in a country that tends to be politically more corrupted. Higher taxes aren't too bad in less corrupted countries cause you receive back a lot. See Germany, yes people get scared cause yeah, the taxes are high. But at least you don't pay thousands of dollars in Healthcare, infrastructure is better, even churches pay taxes which I like cause in other countries they tend to be more corrupted stealing your money. Dog tax for example to keep streets cleaner. And the higher the punishment the less likely people would break rules. Where I live people don't mind breaking rules cause they're not getting fined enough. Where I live high taxes would be awful cause corruption in this country is high. (Used to live in Germany, moved to Latin America a couple of years ago)

Just as a note to folks thinking about coming to the US, speaking as someone who has lived outside the country and has lived here for a while. Health insurance can be a huge cost for folks in the US and puts people into debt, unless you can get it through your employer. But most people will get laid off at some point (I’ve been laid off three times) and lose their health insurance. Masshealth in Massachusetts is usually what people can tap into if they don’t have insurance which is pretty good but other states don’t have that same option for folks because republicans have blocked that option. A lot of republicans in Florida. I could say more issues of concern in the US, as I mentioned about gun violence being a huge issue in this country in other comments. I personally witnessed two people killed by gun violence and my cousin was shot in the head and almost killed. But hopefully you won’t deal with gun violence first hand! Some people live here and don’t experience gun violence. Hence why we still don’t have stricter gun laws because people become complacent very easily in the US. I’m making the opposite move ironically and will be moving to London next year. Love the culture and love it that I feel safe there. Good luck here in the states. Sorry to be negative, but I feel I owe it to people to be honest as an American here. I think entrepreneurship is a wonderful thing, but I would’ve explored some place else. Just being honest :)
