the game is very attractive and visually pleasing, the timed interaction for more dmg or block is fun, but aside from that the game is very shallow and characters arent very interesting.

I think they threw everything at the wall combat wise but it didn't really come together as well as id liked. I started dreading battles because there was usually a specific way to beat each enemy group so I never felt like I got into a groove with it. And since the game is mostly combat and dungeon exploration I just couldn't push on. The story did absolutely nothing for me.

Ten-year-old me would have eaten this up. I came up in the era of these types of rpgs and I could never get enough of them, especially those of the square soft variety. While I was excited to revisit that period of my life with this game, the demo just never clicked with me. I'm afraid I've just moved on. The characters and the dialogue, all crafted to have that retro square game feel just couldn't hook me anymore after I've played games with dialogue and stories with much greater depth. In the end, what I really want is a game that explores some of the retro style like this game does, but has a more mature tone to the characters and storyline.

@@PhillyTJ If Magic isn't complicated then I don't think you'll ever run into that issue. There is a running debate on if MtG or Yugioh are the most complicated games ever made.

All this "new" systems are fun first 50-100 battles and become chore after 500+. Instead of adding some heavy tactical gameplay "j"rpgs are implementing action features in to combat. Why?

I really enjoyed this game, but it does have its issues. The story could have been better, but it wasn't bad. I didn't like that the characters only had 4 abilities, and most of these abilities were unlocked very early. Nothing new for the main characters for over half the game! For me I like playing around with builds and passives. If they continue making RPGs I think they should make sure the characters have a lot of abilities and passives. Even if you can only select a few to equip at a time (similar to Chained Echoes).

I can agree with that. Having more than 4 abilities in the rotation would have been more interesting combat wise and could have helped spiced up the lock system. I have yet to play Chained Echoes but I have also heard great things about it.

I absolutely loved Sea of Stars. Is it one of the absolute best games this years? I can think so. Is it the best rpg I've ever played? No. And there is a very good reason for it. This is an Independant Sabotage Studios' second game, as a prequal to the Messenger. So I understand that they might have missed many people with their first shot at an rpg. Regarding the story, it all ties back to the messenger. If you have completed the messenger, you would get all the plot points. And I also feel as if most people had set wrong expectations when coming into this game. If we are looking at SoS solely at the eres of critics, it wont perform as a 10/10. But the heart put into it combined with the countless good aspects of it makes it simply fun for me. Oh yeah, and 9.2 out of 10 probably. Also great video.

@@Natquerx As someone who’s never played Chrono Trigger, what I expected out of this was a simple, straightforward RPG with tight mechanics and a story that is compelling but nothing to write home about. What I got was exactly that. Aside from a few small gripes I have, I am satisfied.

The only thing that Sea of Stars has over Chained Echoes is the overall art style. Chained Echoes is quite literally better in every conceivable way. More depth in the story (A LOT more), much better combat (SOS combat gets stale pretty quick), and just a better RPG experience.

When I played the demo, I loved the artstyle and music of the game even though I am not a 90s JRPG kid (Octopath Traveller was my very first pixel art JRPG) so I had no nostalgia with this type of game and I still loved the presentation. The combat though, while it was fun in the beginning I didn't felt that sense of urgency because I knew my character that just got knocked out is gonna revive after 2-3 turns which to be honest dimineshed the fun factor a bit. Also some skills were really too op like Valere's boomerang (even though it was my fav skill to use just to see how much I can deflect lol)

I loved every aspect of this game. Art style unmatched, music amazing, combat incredibly fun. The characters and story are good enough. The combat could also be more complex with more habilities and such but for a 20 hour game with not that many fights, it was a lot of fun. The Mario rpg thing and switching characters on the fly, the locks, the combos and ultis. Everything is so good. I also really liked Garl and Seraï. Sometimes a simpler game is all I need. Couldnt put the game down a single time. Honestly I can't think of a game ive had as much fun as this one (not counting Xenoblade) in a while. It fits my taste so perfectly, I adore the art style. For a first time rpg of an indie studio, it's great. I want more of this. I can't understand why people hate it, it's clearlt made with love and I really appreciate that

I agree! I do think the game has a lot of flaws but overall I adored it! I can’t quite fathom why people hate it either. I understand if it’s not your cup of tea, but this game just feels like an absolute labor of love. It was good, simple fun with some of my favorite RPG mechanics all combined into one game.

Meh, this game is so overrated and boring. It's not bad but the pacing of both story and combat is excruciating. Wandering Sword and Chained Echoes are a lot better, even with the latter also being overrated.

Completely lost me on the story stuff boss. I'm the exact opposite. You thought it started strong and ends badly? Did you just do the bad ending or something? Cus then you might have a point lol the bad ending doesn't even comment on what happened to brugraves haha. It starts as a by the numbers boring af rpg lololol. Good guys vs bad guys stuff. Yawn... The girl has blue eyes in the promo art, but brownish in the game. I think they should stayed true to how she looks in the game, she looks prettier that way imo.
