I have a couple things that magicians use for hidden messages. Try both on the journal. One is using a lighter under the page at a small distance and the heat will allow the wording to appear. Another is get graphite on you finger and rub it on the page to reveal indented words on the pages.

Before rewatching any of the old footage, I have a hunch. In the preview for the next episode we see that the mountaineer is in the same spot it was when the team first found it. The black journal D3B told them to keep safe was hidden in the backseat on the drivers side. What if there is more in that seat? Something that connects to the journal? I know it is a stretch, but seeing the mountaineer make a comeback next episode could mean that there is more to find within the car. It is almost like we will have to retrace the steps we took in order to find out more about Deb and Syntec...

Just a thought, can the repair tech salvage the hard drives from the server and retrieve the information on them? You may have to put the disks themselves into a new reader but it might be possible to get to the information. The disks themselves are hard to damage beyond retrieval. Most of the time when a HD dies it is the reader part that is damaged not the disks themselves.
