This is my second attempt at solving my leaking engine. I built this engine for my 1964 standard Beetle, winter before last and has been leaking oil from the moment I turned the key. Last autumn just before I put the car into storage for the winter I removed the engine in hope of fixing the leak so it would be ready for spring time cruising. Well as you guessed it, it wasn't fixed and in this episode I remove the engine once again to further investigate the problem!
I would be grateful for any input to your thoughts and suggestions and if you don't have a suggestion then you may enjoy my problem solving journey.
Hope you enjoy the video and if you do please like and subscribe. Jamie

Hi Jamie Your Videos are Brilliant as always I finally got My Misfire fixed by Myself on Monday so much of it would not have been possible without watching Your channel I am really pleased with Myself actually and at times I did think What have I done and would have wanted to chuck it of a Cliff but at the same time I Love the Old Girl but I have also now found a slight Oil Leek that becomes apparent when I rev the Engine for a good While . This Video is also Very Helpful as I cant Find Garages in Belfast that want to Touch it and I am Really Looking forward to the next Episode I have never taken an Engine out Yet and I must admit That Scares Me . Wishing You Good Luck wit fixing Your Oil Leek I know You can do it . Best Regards Chris

The leak being on top of the block is the oil cooler seals. Just make sure you use the appropriate seals; there is two styles: one for the earlier style and one for the later doghouse style. Some advise to use just a smidge of shellac or Permatex Aviation Sealant around them. You can use the same on the pushrod tube seals. Another useful tip is putting sealant under the washers at the 4 cylinder head nuts that are inside the valve cover under the rocker shafts. That prevents oil seepage from under those that is reflected at the bottom of the head and drips over the J tubes or heater boxes. Also in my opinion the best valve covers are the stock ones with the cork gaskets. Just make sure to use grease on the gaskets and make sure the head and valve cover are spotlessly clean. Re the oil pump size 21 mm sounds small; I suggest 26 mm. Oil weight should follow the factory recommendation for the climate zone the car is operating at. Finally; if your oil smells like gasoline the diaphragm of your fuel pump is toast; you might need to replace the pump. In that case make sure to use the appropriate rod length to the type of pump; there are several lengths available.

Hello there and thanks so much for your comment. I actually used some permatex sealant the previous time I attempted to fix the leak and still didn't solve the problem but hopefully that due to the pressure being too high. I actually bought the 26mm pump so hopefully it will make a difference. If I have to remove the engine again the change the oil filter seals them ill smudge more permatex on them. I have also bought a new pump just in case its leaking fuel to the sump Thanks again. Jamie

If it’s not leaking then it’s out of oil 😂 Use grease on both sides of the cork valve cover gasket and they won’t leak. Oil pressure is pretty high, rule of thumb at operational temp, 10psi per 1k rpm. Change to a lighter oil and retest. Cheapest and easiest thing to do.

Thanks for the advice. Ill try the trick with the grease next time! I have a new smaller pump so hopefully on the now on the right track. Jamie

You might want to consider venting the crankcase. I could tell from your video, but I don't see any venting for you crankcase. If it's not vented correctly, to either a valve cover or air filter pressure will build and push the oil out of wherever it'll pass.

Hello there and thanks for your comment. It actually has a pipe coming off from the filler but hard to see in the video. I need to feed it back into the carb though as its just pointing straight out. Jamie

If that pump is a 30, it’s a bit too much, 26 Schadek should be better, not sure about going to the early 21 ? Looking forward to seeing the new update to this

If that case is early style oil cooler (NOT dog house), and you use a doghouse cooler, you have to use conversion seals.

Hello there. Its a later case from a 1600 and has the bigger oil ways and should be compatible with the doghouse system. It seems I have used the correct size seals but hopefully the downsizing of pump will solve the problem. Fingers crossed, Jamie

Definition of insanity "Repeating the same behavior and expecting a different outcome." (, Don't ask how I know). Maybe some RtV sealant around the outside of the washers? Cheers from New Orleans

you might need oil cooler seals that are 8mm to 10mm, you might have an older oil cooler and a later case or vise versa.

Hello. I have the later 1600 case that has the bigger outlets so I'm hoping that the excess pressure from the pump is the problem but let see. Thanks Jamie

21mm pump is for a 40 horse engine. 26mm is stock for a 1600cc. And a 30mm will work just fine, the pump is not causing a leak.

@jamiedowson6482 it took me 3 times pulling the engine chasing what you have. Each time replacing the main seal. But the last time I also covered the cam plug with silicone. And I can't say if it was the 3rd main seal or covering that cam plug. But my engine no longer leaks.

Interesting. Has anyone suggested using some kind of sealant? Aviation, RTV, etc.on the seals to the oil cooler? What did you torque the nuts to? I'm actually facing a similar issue, but I did not replace the oil pump, so I'm not sure that is the cause. My oil cooler wasn't leaking until I decided to clean it. Oh, those decisions we make when we work on our cars. Looking forward to the next video.

Oh no you have learnt a valid lesson!! Don't clean it 🤣 I used some aviation sealer on the seals on the previous attempt to fix the leak. Hopefully the smaller pump will be a solution. Jamie

@@jamiedowson6482 I tried Aviation on my first attempt. It didn't stop the leak but it was a lot less than when I didn't use any sealant. I'm thinking to try JB Weld Ultimate Grey on my next attempt.

Is the actual oil cooler interface interchangable like that? 70 PSI isn't crazy by any stretch of the imagination but a butt faced joint should have better fitting seals than that surely?
