I never appreciated ‘90s minimalism fashion (until now)

Teenager in the 90s in NY. This was some of our looks for sure. We called in the Calvin Klein look back then. The word minimalism didn't exist for us. A lot of teens liked to pop between styles though. One day you'd be a skater, next day you'd be Tommy Hilfiger preppy, next day you'd be Clueless style cutesy. It was a fun time. :)

I spent part of the 90s in the UK. Minimalism was more of a US think because in the UK it was the whole Boho think happening and was so much more fun. There was a massive acid jazz movement with Jamiroquai and the vibe was really fun.

This is becoming my current aesthetic. Simple well made pieces that can easily be layered. Calvin Klein has great pieces…that I get from Nordstrom Rack 😂

Wow, this video really hit home although I am 50. I was a young adult in the 90s and yes everything you said about body image. My mother told me that even though I wasn’t overweight, I better get underweight because when I got older, I would gain weight and getting fat was the worst thing ever. My boyfriend at the time his mother asked me if I was dieting when I wasn’t and of course I was obsessed with the fact that I should be dieting. I was 5 feet tall and 112 pounds. So funny, as an older adult and as I became a mom I stopped dieting and I even lost weight and I’ve never been overweight. But I think I love 80s fashion and I love 90s fashion and we all need to eat some fat.

I still love 80s/90s fashion, but body image was definitely a prevailing thing, especially since most of the clothes were really tailored for thinner body types and were not inclusive. Ladies who lived during the '90s know😅

I was a preteen & teenager in the '90s who leaned more grunge/punk, but now that I'm older I realize how much the 90s minimalism look got into my developing brain. It feels so natural and normal to me! I'm happy to say that I'm going to join you in being a dystopian grandma and I might want to start early, actually. (Also thank you so much for talking about the horrible 90s body image standards we're still traumatized by! I didn't wear tank tops until my late 30s because of it.)

I hit the sales at Banana Republic and Ralph Lauren. I thrift a lot. At 5’9 I can wear a small or XS in men’s clothing so they said is my side. I grew up wearing men’s shirts because of the better quality and fit.

This has always been my aesthetic. I was born in '95 and I just remember everyone around me being naturally beautiful and fit, so I decided to emulate it. In a way this has always been my aesthetic. While I do have a very overflowing wardrobe, I do know whatever I have is quality and timeless.

As someone who lived through the insane fashion of the 80s, the 90s were like a breath of fresh air. Yes, I did have acid green and hot pink striped jeans in the 80s, thank you very much. Everything was neon or acid-washed. 🤮

I was in my 20s in the 90s and it was glorious. Express and The Limited had the best fashion. Then there was Delia’s for a little less expensive. Plus the platform shoes, the rise of dark nails and the whole urban decay makeup look. Sooo I miss the lower rise flare leg jeans . ♥️♥️♥️♥️

I feel like 90s minimalism is one of the few fashion aesthetics that suits me and I take a lot of inspiration from 90s vogue, Calvin Klein, Kate moss, and Claire Danes. The emphasis on thinness does make me uncomfortable though, and I care about being healthy and having a healthy mindset about food and my body.

I think the "old money" look is better appreciated in real life. You got to see it with your eyes. There's just something about a woman in perfectly tailored clothes, in fine quality materials and beautiful textures that captures your eye. She looks awe striking and opulent.

I feel we have went to another extreme because of the 90's body image. Some people even get upset at the word "healthy". I also feel that there is a disservice done for this period of time that we lived through that we just look at the bodies and don't talk more about the grunge/sick/dirty/addiction realism that took over. It was so much more than just models starving. Some of the photography of this time was also amazing, but it could be seen as damaging to young girls who would glorify an extremely thin body. The majority of it was just extreme rebel fashion but it came at a high cost.

I grew up in the 90's too, in a sad no where land place in Arizona, even so...I saw George Michael's music video, Freedom, and I saw the Supermodels, I saw the black leather jacket, the blue jeans, and white t-shirt he wore in the video and I knew that's what I wanted, I also saw Madonna's music video, Rain, and Madonna in her simple black streamlined dress with her black close cropped hair, and I knew that's what I wanted... I wanted that grownup supermodel minimalistic world so badly, and I wanted to be completely divorced from all of the stuff the other 10 year olds at the time were doing and wearing!

I think I've finally found my own personal true to me style here, like I've discovered that I like my clothes quite plain. Not always, but it's what I'm really drawn to. And, also yes, to the whole body issues. Still striving to be thin and thinner (within reason) and it absolutely has to do with consuming all that media, so never good enough or thin enough. I know I need to work harder on changing my headspace.

Idk if you’ve ever been on TheRealReal, but I’ve gotten some good quality designer pieces from there! I always sort so that I only see items that are labeled as “pristine” or “excellent” condition, and set my price pretty moderately. I have a vintage yohji skirt I am in love with that was about $180. Definitely not old navy or j crew price, but way more affordable. I have gotten some 90s Donna Karan for good prices too!

As an unfashionable teen in the 90s in the rust belt I can be sure my own attire was embarrassing for the most part - including wearing anime t-shirts that had to be mail ordered. Though, I stole all of my Dad's corduroy bell bottoms from the 70s and hemmed in the waist since we have the same inseam. I definitely liked some aspects of the 90s minimalism but it was more for hair than clothing. I think there was a Netflix show a few years ago that really nailed my personal experience down to the exact same chairs in the lunchroom (it was set in Portland about the a film club only got one season). All of the characters high school kids to adults looked very much like what I remembered. Not any sort of well known fashion trend but it was point I think for a lot of middle class communities that weren't culturally important. That shift to weight and body image though. Yeah. I know for a fact I told one of my friends that they day my weight went over 110 lbs I'd flip out - even knowing it isn't a big deal my brain struggled to accept it. I'm still annoyed that I'm around 115 lbs and for the life of me I cannot reason with a part of my brain that weighing 101 for all of undergrad and grad school was likely not normal. I love corduroy then, I love corduroy now. I have quite the collection. Modern movies that take place in the '90s always has a meshing of different '90s era looks (early '90s mixed with mid to late '90s). Almost there, but not quite. I guess that's why I try break down my memories of how the '90s look as I remember them! If I ever see actual '97 in media, I'll be very pleased! I have a goal weight, which makes no sense. I'm 115lbs now, but for some reason I have a lower benchmark and I literally have to shake myself "Stop it! You're healthy. It's good." But the '90s teen in me wants extra credit.

The '90s was actually about having a "Baywatch" body while being LOW MAINTENANCE!!! I was in my twenties then - in one of the most overpopulated states in the US. This decade had little to do with high fashion/clothes and (almost) everything to do with having a swimsuit model's or Playboy Playmate centerfold's body WITHOUT having to weight train/consistent cardio and WITHOUT having to watch how much you eat!!! That's actually low maintenance.

I remember JFK Jr and Carolyn Bassett. I always loved her style but even back then as a child I couldn't stand her eyebrows. I know thin eyebrows was in during that time I too later became a victim to it😅 but her eyebrows really bothered me 😂.

Talk about product placement. You might be tickled to know that an Old Navy ad appeared within the first five minutes of this video. I typically skip through these, but between your planting the seed and the delightful whimsy of the Christmas musical theme I let it play out. This being said, I'm trying to trim the fat in my closets, so your minimalistic credo is a good drill. I always get goosed by your tangental remarks. Having just read "Salem's Lot" for Halloween, the Stephen King referenced made me prick up my ears. I can tell you're a fan. The other thing that amused me was hearing about your first boyfriend. I don't know the dynamic, but I will say that boys tease girls for no other purpose than to get a rise out of them ("You're beautiful when you're angry."). It starts in grade school, and I believe it's used in lieu of flirtation. In retrospect, I hope it fuels some of your writing, especially if your heroine offs her love interest. ; ) Seriously, you can't say "heroin!?"

The super models like Claudia and Cindy had more feminine bodies, Kate Moss looked very skinny and honestly I never thought she had a pretty face, maybe she was choosen on purpose for not being as pretty as them. In the mid 90s the fashion was rather plain and baggy and from 99 to 2006 it looked more like made for porn stars and Rene Zellweger was considered fat in Brigdet Jones. The 90s and 00s were anorectic times for sure
