Also a media collector. I just try to keep it to the stuff I love, granted I love a lot ha. But when the shelfs get packed I do a little purge. Just look for ones I maybe like but don't love. Normally like once a year I try to go through and areas that seem to be getting jamed up. I just purged 10 board games to make some space. I have had those ones like 5 years and never played them. I did bring in one that I thought we would play, age of comics :) I was right my group so far has really enjoyed it. So I made space and got something that will get used more.

You are not alone. I am currently trying to decide if I want to keep my games or not. I am also leaning toward having someone copy my DVDs and putting them on a USB so I can watch movies on my computer and not rely on the internet or a TV. It is not easy to decide. I think a part of me is just scared that people will not believe me, if I say I like Greek mythology or Persona 4 golden, if I don't have a copy. Which is absurd, I have played persona 4 golden, the "prof" is the memories within me, not the limited run game in my box.

100% , minimalism has gotten so performative and has this luxury bent. For me I’m a middle of the road person, former overconsumer. My goals are to use up all of the toiletries, books, teas, etc that I overconsumed and then become more of a minimalist, but i have lots of sporty hobbies that involve all different kinds outfits / gear so I’m not gonna be a minimalist like these tik tokers. Loved your video!

As another minimalist, I want to make sure you know, that you are a minimalist if that is what you want :) it is a tool, not a number. It is about making your life fit you. It gives you the ability to say "does this item still add good stuff to my life or is it time to say goodbye?" that is all. You can have as many hobbies and stuff as you want, from my point of view, as long as it works for your life and that you remember to check in with yourself and the items you have.

There is a difference between minimalism and underconsumption. Minimalists can easily get rid of things if they don't like them. They want the minimal about of stuff, often high quality. There are even luxury minimalists who own 2 luxury bags, 30 pieces of luxury clothes, very expensive furniture etc. Underconsumpion is about people who want to get maximum from what they already own, and they don't want to change it for something better. They even get creative with upcycling their belongings
@Summer_and_Rain

You are right, but you are also wrong. As you say there are minimalist that focus on luxury, but there are probably just as many that just uses what they already have or focus on getting second hand when they need something new. It is up to that one person what kind of life the want to live, minimalism does not cut you off those paths.

Teresa, what I love about your channel is that it can't be categorized. You can't be boxed in because you have so many interests and minimalist or not, your brain is cluttered with stuff! (mine is too, so I appreciated it!). I am neither a minimakist nor a hoarder, but I don't put myself in any specific category. I'd be very pleased to keep everything I have until I kick the bucket (not counting clothes and such) but I know that won't happen. In the old days (and i'm ancient so I can vouch for this) stuff lasted a very long time. If you had a television set, you got it repaired and it survived a looong time. Today stuff break and is replaced. I collect comc books (and write about the creators) but I've pretty much stopped buying stuff and have sold/gotten rid of/given away books I don't feel the need to have. I'm in the decluttering mode in this stage of my life, although I;m also a sentimentalist, so old cards, hand-written, person notes and other ephemera is usually kept. Also great to hear you're a movie buff. I love man types of movies and am pretty much a movie nerd, I rattle off directors, actors, cinematographers, etc, to the delight/consternation of friends. Finally, there is absolutyely nothing wrong with your voice. Couldn't even tell you had any issues if you didn't mention it. And I could also relate, since I had a phlemg-filled week! Continue on the path of algorythym befuddling posts!

awww thank you! ❤️ Stuff were definitely made better back then (with real wood!) and made with the intention of repairing them. I definitely see the quality difference in furniture and electronics nowadays as everything is manufactured with planned obsolescence. Sadly, repairing an item is not as profitable to companies as getting you to buy a new one every few years when the original item breaks. That's why I hesitate to get rid of older items now & try to find some way to repair/repurpose them. I think if an item holds sentimental value, I'll definitely keep them. I've made the mistake of getting rid of a few things from my childhood that I regret now. At the same time, I don't plan to collect all the jam jars and buttons that come my way;)

Teresa, When I was younger I would occasionaly take a tape recorder or Transistor radio apart and attempt to fix it. Sometimes I actually did. I have an old portable Zenith black and white TV from around circa 1967 that was my grandparents. It worked for decades until TV went digital. The only problem it had was a lot of static and I once took the back off and cleaned and vaccumed it. The sound was perfect after that!

I don’t normally like to put labels on everything as it gets unnecessary with most things. However, words have meaning, and there are differences between the different things. Poor is different from broke. Minimalist is slightly different from essentialist or underconsumption. Cheap is different than frugal. For example, if I can afford more expensive things yet buy the lowest cost items with subpar quality, that’s just cheap. Frugal is putting in effort to obtain the best quality for your standards yet in the most affordable way.
@Es24688
@Es24688 4 ай бұрын
Underconsumption by definition is not buying enough to support what you probably need for your lifestyle. Minimalism says you buy what’s necessary for your lifestyle while knowing that will look different for everyone. Essentialism says you should have what’s essential for life but not anything above. Overconsumption is obviously buying more than you need or what you could realistically ever even use.

Honestly, I welcomed underconsumption as a TikTok trend. It wasn’t new to me as a millennial, who experienced and participated in minimalism in the 2010s. I grew out of it somewhen around 2018 and started carefully curating my style, my home etc. I‘m neither minimalist nor maximalist. And I think most people in the word are exactly like that. Overconsumption displayed on TikTok has made me dislike the app a lot, since every influencer just tries to shove useless crap down your throat. I‘m totally over that. „Underconsumption core“ however started to give major „I‘m not like the other girls“ vibes rather quickly. Oh look, I don’t paint my nails! Oh look, I only need two pairs of shoes since I don’t have a problem like cheesy feet. You get it - lots of people made it another type of competition, especially among women. It‘s sad that we can’t seem to find a healthy middle round.

Thank you for the video :) I feel like commenting on your comparison of underconsumption to minimalism. Although one who considers themselves a minimalist can be part of underconsumption, the opposite is not always true. An underconsumptionist does not have to be a minimalist. I think there is more philosophical undertones to minimalism hence why it’s hard to say that underconsumption is a rebrand of minimalism. In addition, underconsumption focuses more on finding comfort in what you have vs minimalism finding minimal amount of items you can/ need to have your comfort. Hence in a sense to me underconsumption core is more inclusive but also less deep and a bit more inclusive due to that. Would love to hear your thoughts/ opinion on this take !

Aesthetics, aesthetics, minimalism aesthetics!!! I like your angle, Teresa. It's not what you hoard, it's how you hoard it. (Although in the end, you are what you hoard, right?) I'm definitely trying to trim the fat. Here in NYC, every square inch of one's apartment matters. In this regard, one can only accumulate so much before it starts to make a difference both practically and aesthetically. For this I"m grateful. I've also become of fan of those two guys who call themselves The Minimalists. They're the ones who taught me that things don't necessarily have inherent value. It's the value that you ascribe to the things that makes them hard to part with. Interestingly, my desire to sell off a bunch of DVDs (some still virgins, i.e., shrink-wrapped) is how I stumbled upon your channel in the first place. I believe I put something along the lines of "selling DVDs on eBay" in the search field and your "seller's remorse" video that you reference in this one came up. As a result, I now gleefully anticipate your biweekly installments. If you were to suddenly stop producing your content, it would make me sadder than when Trader Joe's discontinued their Mango Sorbet. ; )

Comparing me to Trader Joe's Mango Sorbet (though I never had it) is probably the sweetest thing anyone has ever said to me! ❤️ Btw, in addition to extreme minimalist content, I love watching those Apartment Therapy videos about tiny apartments in the NY/Brooklyn area. I love seeing the clever and creative ways people use their spaces. The Minimalists are legends in the minimalism space. I hope I don't come off as having an ax to grind with minimalism/minimalist in general... I'm only pecking back at the mean ones who pecked at me 🤣 🐓
@00084915
@00084915 4 ай бұрын
Consider it a compliment of the highest order. That sorbet* was reason enough to make the trip to TJ's just as your videos are reason enough to go to KZbin. While I certainly don't perceive you as grinding an ax, I think that's the entitlement of anyone who is brave enough to put their self in your position. Sometimes the verbal equivalent of a sharp ax is necessary when one is in the public eye. (And if it's properly sharpened, you won't have to swing so forcefully.😂) _____________ *I have since, however, learned to make a fairly decent approximation of the product using an immersion blender and a recipe I found on line. I think this is a better alternative than having to join/form a support group to mourn the void created by the discontinuation.😀

Whatever the current branding is I just call it conscious consumerism. I’m not interested in minimalism as an aesthetic. I like my books and trinkets and copious amounts of blankets. BUT I really try to consider the life cycle of anything I buy. One for the environment. But two for my own mental health and sense of gratitude. I think it’s a good thing when people reassess why they feel compelled to purchase something. I place little value on owning physical media like your DVDs, but YOU find value in it so that’s fine too!

I’m definitely not minimalist (absolutely impossible with children tbh) but trying to just cut down on things I don’t need or love so my house feels more manageable and I save money. I guess I’m just trying to be less of a consumer because it got to the point where buying things just feels empty most of the time. I’ve got everything I need really.

I struggled with being a minimalist because of the aesthetic! I’m a Japanese learner and I’ve watched the extreme Japanese minimalist she shows on the video and always there is an aesthetic (and a Mac 🖥️ and the last iPhone) and all of this made me realise it’s just an example of minimalist aesthetic or core and not the real life 😂

Watching vids of homes where everything is neatly hidden behind copious cabinets quite relaxing for me, but I know I will not do that because I like seeing my stuff. I tend to enjoy collecting physical items, and I am also still using school supplies from 15+ years ago. I see no point in buying more writing supplies... unless they are extremely cute. I miss my years of stinginess because of my mental health, but I also know that my OC tendencies manifested in equally as stressful other ways back then.

I dunno, frugality shares a lot of rooms with minimalism, and it's not an elitist stuff. You can make anything elitist. Aesthetic minimalism gets a bad rap, but is not, at its core, elitist.

You sound fine! The internet is full of people just looking to be mean, like the 2 old men from the muppets show. Ignore it. I say just be balanced. I love movies, board games, and music. Each thing has its alloted shelf space and if it gets too full I purge some to make a little space. I want collections that are just the ones I really love. I just purged maybe 10 board games but I did buy one. I took out ones we never play, made some space, and then added in one I knew we would play more often. Age of Comics: the golden years is super fun!

I am the collector but why on earth anyone cares what someone else does in their own home/life is beyond me. I had a friend who said my collection stressed him out! It has it's own room in my house, just don't go in that room? I again have it all neatly on shelfs in one small room. Yes it is a modest collection around 2k films and 900 cds. But it is tidy and all has its spot on a shlef.

Your voice sounds perfectly normal to me. (You do sound like you have a cold, please take care ❤.) I would advice to have a look at your audio, I'm no expert so not quite sure where to look exactly, mic or editing, maybe playing around with gain... the audio of your voice seems to pop sometimes, feeling like a punch to my ears, that might be from holding the mic too close and/or exceeding its decibel range. Or it could be my phone 😅 hard to tell

Yes! I really see this at play. The moral superiority and how it should be a certain aesthetic. Poor people can be all underconsumption, but they won't be called that way because it doesn't fit into their aesthetics of beige colors and MacBooks.

I immerse myself in minimalism content and consider myself a minimalist-though, in a way, I might even be a maximalist when it comes to my minimalist habits. I’ve noticed that the most popular minimalist channels I follow seem to speak directly to those who genuinely aspire to live a simple, uncluttered life. Maybe the KZbin algorithm has done a fantastic job curating just the right content for me, but I find that the channels I watch rarely focus on aesthetics. My own minimalist home is visually pleasing to me, and honestly, that’s all that matters. I’m not concerned with whether others find it appealing. My motivation for embracing minimalism is 95% driven by environmental concerns-because, yes, consumerism is wreaking havoc on our planet-and 5% by the desire to simplify my life. What I’ve discovered, though, is that minimalism has made my life exponentially easier. So, yes, I’m all in on minimalism, and I absolutely love it.

I don't have a ticktock account because of the constant ads, KZbin has ads, Instagram has ads, KZbinrs promote their sponsors products. Everything is just one giant advertisement to consume All the time. And I have fallen back into the consumer trap and then oscillate back to being frugal and trying my hardest not to overspend. But it seems like I always overspend on groceries, food and Costco! Costco. We are not poor nor cheap but it is so hard to hold onto a hard earned dollar these days with subtle and not so subtle messaging to consume and buy! My husband has over consumption/hoarder tendencies while I am anti clutter and less buying. Husband is always online because he works remotely on his computer and has one screen on Amazon searching the sales while the screen is work related. 😂

Costco is my weakness. I never just leave with that roast chicken 😉 but I get so much joy every time I go in. And it's because of all the packaging from food that makes it hard to be as minimalistic in my household as I want to be. A few months ago, I tripped and fell into a pile of those boxes they give you at check out, which I frugally keep to collect all my recycling 🤣

The mention of your dad and his shirts is something I can totally relate to with my mom. She will literally wear the same T-shirts at home until there's holes in the armpits. It isn't like she doesn't have brand new clothes or anything like that. She just has that same minimalist mentality that if it ain't broke than why get rid of it? My dad on the other hand is the complete opposite. He wants New everything. It also doesn't help that my mom is also a bit of a hoarder, and will refuse to get rid of, or replace things, that she feels can still be used.

Lol just me over here somewhat a minimalist but still kept my DVD collection lol I just put them in DVD binder? I don’t know what those things are called but I put all my favorite childhood DVDs and I kept them since like forever and even when I was a minimalist hard-core and I only had like 100 things in my entire house. I still have those DVDs lol And I’ll probably never get rid of them because I love them. They’re my childhood. They’re what I watch when I have my Internet go out lol they’re what I watch when I need that childhood feeling lol though I do miss my VHS tapes and kind of wish I hadn’t got rid of them, but they’re just so bulky and I don’t know lol

🤣 To mock or not to mock, that is the question. Whether 'tis nobler to suffer the slings and arrows of militant minimalist/collectors or by opposing ... mock them. I have chosen to mock, but I'm shielding my mocking sword until I'm pecked at again. 🐓 With great mocking power comes great responsibility and I prefer to talk about gorgeous Baroque dresses😅 And yes, clothes really were better back then. Even in the '90s and early '00s. Sadly, now that the Pandora's box of fast fashion has been opened, I don't think it will ever close again. Even an expensive price tag doesn't guarantee good quality 😭
