At it's core, there's a sort of elitism to all minimalism. Sorry, not sorry. When you're poor, you keep stuff because you might need it in the future. You can't throw something away thinking "if I need it again, I'll buy it again." That's an expensive mentality. Decluttering is a luxury. It's a statement to the world that "whatever I need, I can buy and throw away and buy again and again." A certain level of security and disposable income is the core of minimalism.

At 9:00 on the pantries ... I now use containers because I had a moth infestation a few years ago, and now I am meticulous about decanting into containers when I bring something new into my apartment. But most of the containers are cleaned sauce jars, some still with the sticky residue from the label on the outside. I only needed to buy containers for rice and other bulk 5-10lb bags of grains. I've sometimes ALMOST bought containers and have come back to myself (removed them from cart) because I know that I'll have more in 2-3 weeks when I'm done with, say, a few jars. Overall: I thought of myself as a minimalist for a long time and now mostly think of myself as an eco-aware person who wants to consume a sane amount for one person ... we'd apparently have enough for everyone on Earth if we each consumed about what someone in the 1960s did (see study with the DOI 10.1016/j.gloenvcha.2020.102168), which was way less than what we do now. Otherwise, I got Flu B right before the pandemic hit and was sick for a few weeks, and I ran out of clean sheets and loungewear because I was very sweaty and way too ill to go to the laundromat. While everyone else was fighting over toilet paper in March 2020, I was ordering lounge pants and 2 more spare sheet sets so I could be sick for 3ish weeks and have what I needed at home. I just did a cleanup/inventory of my linens and clothes today and let's just say that I won't be buying anything new unless I'm replacing pants that are wearing out or get oil stains on my work shirts for a long, long time ... and I like what I have, so why would I declutter it? Probably means I can't use that label anymore! I was already really pushing it with my functional "I'm in academia" book collection lol.

Here's to the Cyclopses. I happen to be reading Stephen Fry's "Mythos," and he speaks of Brontes, one of the Cyclopses of Greek Mythology. Early in the book he references the Bronte sisters in a footnote: "The brontosaurus or 'thunder lizard' got his name from Brontes. The novelist sisters from Yorkshire may have too. Their father was born 'Brunty' but changed it to Bronte, perhaps to lend a grand peal of classical thunder to his Irish name." I'm in a classical book club on the Upper West Side, so your "slightly unhinged" book report is quite welcome. (Maybe you can come in as a guest moderator one day.) I've always assumed that Jane Eyre was "chick lit," but your synopsis has been a revelation. And reading Wuthering Heights at the tender age of thirteen sounds like a big undertaking. Were you able to assimilate it at that age? Were you a child prodigy? If so, what happened? 🤣(Kidding!!! ) Seriously, I'm hoping to read one of these before long. Victorian Gothic Romance really is a thing, isn't it? P.S. On the subject of horse impressions, it doesn't get any better than Romain Duris portraying a whopping three different types of horses in the film, "Moliere." You can Google the clip, but I recommend seeing the film in its entirety, especially if you know any of Moliere's plays.

I’m definitely not minimalist (absolutely impossible with children tbh) but trying to just cut down on things I don’t need or love so my house feels more manageable and I save money. I guess I’m just trying to be less of a consumer because it got to the point where buying things just feels empty most of the time. I’ve got everything I need really.

Except for the fact i Uber to work when it's raining, I think I could live with a dumb phone. Yeah, my apartment complex has some stupid laundry app, but the machines still take quarters. Anything I use that needs 2x auth just does it with a text. Restaurants around here tried it with the QR codes during the pandemic, but I haven't seen one in well over a year now, and I've never used contactless pay anyway.

This is just a natural struggle for relevance that Gen Z is going through. Us millennials never had to go through that struggle because Gen X was never relevant in the eyes of mainstream media. Sorry, Xers, but you know it's true. Baby Boomers held onto the reins of culture way too long and by the time they let go it was too late for Gen X and control went to Millennials very quickly and without much fuss. Now Gen Z wants a turn and they're trying to get it the only way they know how: with snark.

I was a 90s teen on the East Coast, and this look (or the cheap mall version of it) was all over the place. At my senior prom, like 90% of the girls were in some version of a little black slip dress with a messy updo and smudgy eye makeup with no lip color.

Whatever the current branding is I just call it conscious consumerism. I’m not interested in minimalism as an aesthetic. I like my books and trinkets and copious amounts of blankets. BUT I really try to consider the life cycle of anything I buy. One for the environment. But two for my own mental health and sense of gratitude. I think it’s a good thing when people reassess why they feel compelled to purchase something. I place little value on owning physical media like your DVDs, but YOU find value in it so that’s fine too!

Three questions (for my tiny book club😉): 1. Favorite movie adaptation of Jane Eyre? 2. Favorite movie adaptation of Wuthering Heights? 3. What book would you like to see me work into a future video essay? 💖
@000849155 күн бұрын
1. Lots of adaptations out there (none of which I've seen) but anything with Orson Welles and Elizabeth Taylor can't be all bad. 2. I think I've seen the Olivier/Oberon version. I'd view it again unless you've got other recommendations. 3. Anything by Stephen King or Agatha Christie would be a blast! 👍

If you feel the urge to declutter again, do what most people do & stick it in the attic or maybe the garage. When you run out of space in 10 years, you can go "Oh, I haven't used that in 10 years, so it's pretty safe for me to throw it away".

(Oh upsie 22:48... I hope not all long comments will share the fate of that one...) I share your passion for Victorian Gothic Romance Literature while also allowing myself to expand my reading beyond Victorian Gothic Romance Literature to any sort of literature resembling Victorian Gothic Romance Literature, like a lot of period/costume pieces/different cultures historical fiction giving the same vibe like Victorian Gothic Romance Literature. I also feel like the only algorythm that gives a shit about Victorian Gothic Romance Literature is my Pintrest and i respect and depend on it for that and the estetic of my life i guess. And then maybe yt also spies on my goodreads or shady internet sites from which i precure my book fascinations because you came on my feed with this whole Victorian Gothic Romance Literature while yt doesn't know this side of me, not from me at least, not till now. I hope it doesn't forget it tho, that i like Victorian Gothic Romance Literature. At 8:23 this painting is on the cover of one of various editions of a famous polish book "Kordian" by Juliusz Słowacki and it always made me laugh so much because i always think to myself that the only reason they chose it as the cover of this book is because there is this ridiculous part of the book in which the main protagonist flies on a f-ing cloud of of Mount Blanc, on which he appeared ridiculously out of nowhere as well. Some of those authors in early 19th centure must have had such a fun time writing. (Oh, 16:00 and i see they also used it for "Wuthering Heights", this paining has game!) So it seems: the hotter, the wilder, the more tention and pinning we can get the better for us Victorian Gothic Romance Literature girlies, which we knew already, it's an established and self-praised part of our obssesion with Victorian Gothic Romance Literature. And maybe the reason for romanticising oh so many toxic relationships or/and lonely nights (I really think it is making girls in particular romanticise at least some parts of not so nice relationships, like not those completly toxic but those for which you have to squint your eyes to see the red flags). But also we don't talk about that, lol, that's a plus to all that tragic mist clouded energy we want to exude, right? Right...? I'm sorry, i come with good intentions (if i couldn't tie my sarcasm down enough for it to be obvious!)! Your vid gave my brain a bit of a dizzying effect it seems, with all that Victorian Gothic Romance Literature and i don't belong to any club that i could share my Victorian Gothic Romance Literature thoughts with, so that's why and where this obnoxious comment came from. I hope it's received well. (also, if any of this doesn't make sence it's maybe because it didn't to begin with or maybe because google translate tolerates spelling mistakes (why?!) and it's been a while since i wrote anything this long in english and i depend on spelling checking because english is not intuitive with it's spelling to my foreign brain, so...) TMI: I like to imagine comments i make online in real life, like how would it sound if i said this out loud to someone i know, right? And so i think i would be crossed off this person's christmas invitation list. But maybe i still would get a present. I hope. I love the internet, one can be ridiculous and not have to face immediate judgement.

The import part about minimalism isn't getting rid of stuff just to get rid of stuff and meet the requirements to make a trendy Instagram/pinterest minimalism post. It's to remove things from our life that bring no value. You aren't "breaking minimalism" by buying things that bring you value. You break minimalism by keeping the things that don't.
