As someone who owns an '18 gas F150 (higher spec'ed XLT without the safety nags package or any internet connectivity, 3.5l eb, 36g tank) and a wife with a MYLR (among other cars and older trucks), I'm regularly reminded of how good each vehicle is at it's own thing and the annoyances of both. I love the drivetrain and low energy cost of the Tesla. But I also love the capability and simplicity of driving the gas F150 that never bings or beeps at me, will never upload telemetry from me, and never tries to assume what I want it to do, while thoughtlessly allowing for covering multiple states on whatever remote routes I want, stopping where I want when I want without so much as thinking about centering those stops around energy. Hauling myself and a bag of groceries or the entire family with a boat in tow and the bed full of camping gear. Doesn't matter, it just works. I don't think going to a 80k+ version of my truck just to save some energy costs while losing all the capability and simplicity of owning the gas powertrain in today's world is very compelling in a truck right now. I don't really care that much about the crazy power of the BEV, the 3.5L is pretty damn good. Give me the freedom of the gas version, show me that it's going to cost the same or less long term, and will last at least as long and they'll sell millions of them. This currently doesn't really seem that promising to deliver on any of the three.

You should get the L14-30 EVSE plug adapter for the Tesla Mobile Charger and not use socket converters for 2 reasons. 1. It's dummy proof, just plug it in and it automatically limits you to 24 amps. No need to remember to set it to 24 amps on the display, anyone can use it. 2. It has a temperature sensor at the plug end to monitor plug temperature to prevent excessive melting and fires. You don't get that with a plug socket converter. Also, you shouldn't set the current limit to the exact rating of the plug, you're supposed to set it to 80% of the plug rating, or 24 amps.

I've got a PHEV with a 16 kWh battery that I was hoping to utilize while camping to run a CPAP machine overnight, but the ignition times out after 30 minutes and the in-vehicle AC inverter, usb ports, and 12v ports cut power, with no way that i've found to override that behavior. I'm curious if the F150 Lightning has a similar timeout at any point.
@darpompie43543 ай бұрын
There is an option you can turn on or off to have the truck shut off if it's been left on and in park for 30min. At the time of this video, the truck needed to be powered on for the outlets to work so you would have to turn the auto shut off if you wanted uninterrupted power for longer than 30min. The 2024 lightnings can now have the outlets operating even with the truck powered off. This functionality is also supposed to be sent down via an over the air update to the 22 and 23 models. I haven't received the update yet on my new 23 lightning so I can not confirm if the update is released yet or not. There is also a setting so that you can have the outlets shut off when the battery hits an adjustable range remaining (eg 50 miles left) so you don't deplete the battery to nothing.

I see you used an L14-30 to NEMA 14-50 adapter. But you also need to make sure to set the EVSE or car to under 30amps. It's sort of a shame that the Ford mobile EVSE is capable of like 32amps, which is too much for the Pro Power... I had a friend test this and their Tesla was able to overload the Lightning. The EVSE itself could have 30amp or 28amp so that it would never draw more than the Pro Power can supply...

Gotta put this drama on… Netflix! Oscar winners! 😂 My next EV has got to have V2L. Too bad Tesla turns up its nose to it… so far. So… you had to use a NEMA L14-30 adapter to plug in the power cord's NEMA 14-50 plug? Odd that Ford doesn't just use a 14-50 outlet so that the adapter isn't needed, but I guess the outlet is only 240V x 30A = 7.2kW.
@GROGU123 Жыл бұрын
The L14-30 outlet is the standard 240v outlet on most portable generators. Most tools at construction sites will already be set up to L14-30 which twist and locks, not 14-50 which is more common on dryer outlets.
@Yanquetino Жыл бұрын
@@GROGU123 …and RV Parks and Marinas and people's garages for EVs. But I guess there are no adapters to accommodate 14-50 to L14-30…? I can only find one. For $25.
@GROGU123 Жыл бұрын
@@Yanquetino RV parks use TT-30 which EVSE also makes an adapter for. EVSE also makes an L14-30 as well. When I say adapter, I mean just the plug end that connects directly to the Tesla Mobile charger, just like the OEM plug. It doesn’t convert 1 plug to another. EVSE is the name of the company. These are safer because just like the OEM plugs they automatically set the charge current to 80% of the breaker and they have temperature sensing at the plug. With plug converters you don’t get either making them more dangerous to use.
@Yanquetino Жыл бұрын
@@GROGU123 Huh. TT-30 at RV Parks, huh? Guess I was hallucinating when I plugged my Tesla UMC in using its 14-50 adapter at the campgrounds we've stayed at over the years. But keep pontificating and lecturing to set me straight, won't you?
@GROGU123 Жыл бұрын
@@Yanquetino Thats for the 50amp service. I didnt mention 14-50 because that comes with the mobile charger by default. TT-30 is used for the 30 amp service. Some campgrounds dont have 50 amp service or the 50amp spots are full, but will have 30 amp service in the smaller rv spots. Many of the recepticals will have both 50 and 30 amp. However many older national parks only have TT-30. Now you are enlightened. L14-30 is used by portable generators and the F-150 lightning. If you are serious about road tripping cross country, you should get the TT-30 and L14-30 adapters from EVSE to ensure you are planned for all contingencies.

As Elon said, the F150 lightning is a pretty good truck (if a bit expensive). My wife loves her 2020 F150 XLT; I can only imagine how much nicer the 2023 Lightning is. However, if I were ever to replace my 2023 Model Y LR, I expect be with a another Y or a Cybertruck, not a Lightning, though since there are so many unknowns about the CT, that expectation isn't based on any solid info -- really looking forward to the inevitable F150/Cyber comparison vids!
@Bzzap83 Жыл бұрын
Will the Cybertruck have any power outlets?
@darpompie43543 ай бұрын
I was thinking like you. Due to the price and range Elon promised, I held out buying a lightning and waited for the CT. Once the CT came out and the range was halfed and the price was doubled, my thoughts changed. I watched a million reviews and my conclusion was the CT is definitely not for me. I picked up a platinum lightning at a fraction of the cost a couple of months ago and I couldn't be happier.
