Pokémon X an Y kinda did something with this idea, but much more convoluted. In some wild battles you would see rocks or trees behind the wild Pokémon. If you use a move that hits multiple targets, it would break the terrain and you get an item drop (usually a berry or stone). Of course It wasn’t really brought attention in game, so not a lot of people know about the mechanic. I know it’s not exactly the same as a Pokémon dropping an item, but I figured I should mention it.
@K0DA._.
@K0DA._. 7 ай бұрын

Roughly, Game Boy = NES. Game Boy Advance = SNES. This one was made recently, so much larger cheaper carts can be made vs back in the day. It has 150 (+1?) large data cost sprites. If you swapped the large data sprites for a generic symbol of the type (a rock, lightning bolt, water fountain, leaf) with a subname of (onyx, Pikachu, squirtle, venosaur) it'd work on the small cart.

About the "magic pixel" - it happens when the developer doesn't code in an exception for the health bar to always exist until HP falls to EXACTLY zero. If the percentage is low enough, and the health bar isn't wide enough, you can get situations like you saw in the Elite Four, where the health bar is entirely missing, but whatever it represents still has a tiny amount of health remaining.
@marhawkman303
@marhawkman303 7 ай бұрын
Yeah, my thought was that the HP bar is in chunks, 1 chunk per pixel. but in this game the last chunk is only shown if you have that much or more HP. If you have only 1 HP... it might not be enough.

I think the reason why Gyarados was having trouble picking the KO with STAB water type moves against Pokemon with times 4 weaknesses might be because this game might not have the STAB mechanic, so it was missing that extra 50% boost. Just a hunch, but that's the only thing that makes sense

@@chancellorrussell5946 I actually calced at a few points where I could see them and the Pokemons' stats are identical to what they would look like if their DVs/IVs were 0 and they had no other boosts. I wouldn't imagine they'd miss something like the STAB boost if they were able to get so many specific base stats right, but like it was mentioned in the video I wouldn't be surprised if something with the damage calculation was a bit off. Everything did seem just a bit bulkier than I would expect but I don't really have any big reasons beyond that.

This game isn't even the only version of Kanto on the NES, Waixing did a Pokémon Red port that uses the original graphics, but that one isn't nearly as good, and yet another company did a port of LeafGreen that also uses the FRLG graphics and has a more faithful version of Kanto but is split into three parts and uses Hoenn music.

I have to disagree with your opinion on statuses. The ability to overwrite them messes with a lot of the strategy involved. Using a slow, defensive Mon to absorb an incoming thunder wave is great because it means that Mon can't be toxic'd later on. Also, if you know they have a dangerous sleep move, like a Breloom with Spore, it's good to know that a mon that already had a status is essentially immune to Spore.

Wasn't familiar with your channel before stumbling across this video, but I loved it! Just subscribed, and am hopeful you'll do a nuzlocke of the R/S port too and make a video about it.

Okay, so, going into this video totally blind and leaving a comment before watching the it: knowing that it's made by the devs that remade FF7 for the NES has really raised my expectations for this game.

It’s amazing that an NES (the console you had to blow and jiggle the cartridge of to work properly) can run Pokemon (the game that almost cracked the GameBoy hardware like a walnut) so well I want to meet the mad lads who did this bootleg. (It’s not even a bootleg at this point. It’s more like one of those custom prosthetic legs that looks all artsy and bionic.)

This was really surreal for me, having played and watched these games so many times. Please please do the Gen 3 games too, I would love to see that.

I love how the translators handled the Pokemon types; since they're each represented by a single symbol of Chinese text in the original bootleg, the translators used the Pokemon TCG type symbols, since they would fit perfectly. This means there are some unusual details, like the Dragon type icon, which wasn't added to the TCG until 2012, which takes the port out of its 2005 context, as well as brand new symbols for types like Ground, Flying, Bug, Poison, and Ghost, which wouldn't get official icons (outside Pokemon Ranger and other edge cases that wouldn't carry their designs over) until Pokemon GO. This visually dates the translation to before 2016. I'd actually be really curious to see the symbols the translators made for Rock and Ice, as those were the only two types I didn't remember seeing the icons for in this edit. I'm also just assuming they used the Steel-type icon from the TCG, since even though I didn't see that either, that was made at the same time as Dark-type.

Did this game basically predict how Pokemon Scarlet and Violet would handle drops?
@Vmac1394

That's how every other RPG works. You kill a monster and it drops things based on a drop table. Only in Pokémon can you only take items from something that's conscious.

I was on the fence whether or not to buy a copy as I got a handmade portable NES that works pretty well. I think I'll get this game now! Also I found it interesting that bootleg games were the work of a company instead of an individual. Great vid!
