Honestly I think that metaphor doesn't fit very well. If you were to play Doom with only the punch, that would be a Self-Imposed Challenge. But the signs in the game are more of an in-game challenge. Rather, it's more like if Doom had optional hostages to go and rescue where tougher obstacles and challenges where laid out but had a fairly simple start-to-finish goal.

One of the reasons why I love CD is that, a lot of its levels feel like huge playgrounds. People praise the physics and momentum in Sonic 1 through 3&K but there was rarely a moment where you could actually go nuts and explore what the physics were capable of (Unless its Casino Night or w.e). Stages like Collision Chaos, Stardust Speedway and Metallic Madness reward you for using all of your moves (and the super underrated Peelout) to their fullest potential!

Nothing is better than getting enough speed to fly past the top of the screen for a good few moments, bounce on a robot or tv and fly back out of view XD Though, the Figure 8 Peelout was a little underwhelming imo, since it moved just as fast as the spin dash and only destroys robots ya land on, not run into or fly up into because of aforementioned upward momentum.

I actually liked this game very much! But I first played it when it came out on Steam. The basic instructions showed up at the beginning, explaining I need speed to do time travel, so I wasn't as confused. I guess at first I just wasn't sure what I was supposed to do with all those timelines. But that's part of the fun to discover what the game is about. I now have very fond memories of Sonic CD.

I really liked the idea of having to keep your speed up for a certain amount of time in order to get to the past, when you pulled it off it felt very rewarding. I just wish it was less punishing, since if you screw it up after you've almost made it you lose it. I also don't know why it was necessary to have future signs, because unless you're curious there's no reason to even go to the future in any given stage. It's just an annoying obstacle, and I think if the game only let you go to the past and present nothing would really be lost. Nice video, btw!

Sonic cd is without a doubt the most unique and alienated Sonic game out of the classics which is why so many people are turned off by it and it’s design because they are so used to playing classic Sonic games only one way and Sonic Cd is a slightly different take on it, heck I didn’t like it a lot when I first played it, but when I took the time to find out how to use the time travel mechanic and really take in the levels graphics it quickly became my preferred experience, I’m so happy you decided to give my favourite Sonic game a different outlook! It truly deserves it…(and yes I prefer it over Sonic 2 & 3, not that those games aren’t fantastic in there own right) 🙂

I'm glad you finally came to love the game, but i find extreme frustration with how the time travel mechanic works, since there's a lot of times where the level can suddenly stop you w/o warning. if it was as easy as hitting an item box or a warp ring, it'd be a lot more fun to explore and complete the levels, i feel.

I'd like this game more if time travel wasn't so cumbersome. The fact that you have a limited amount of time travel doesn't make a lot of sense, and maintaining high speed for a few seconds just to get stopped in your tracks by a misjump or wall just before the warp is very annoying and doesn't help the matter. And I do have to question the inclusion of a time limit in a game focused on exploration.
@MrBell-xl7hd
@MrBell-xl7hd 5 жыл бұрын
10 minutes is more than enough time if you know what you're doing, I can usually spend 4-5 minutes to find the sign posts and destroy the machine to get a good future. My favorite is traveling through time on the same stage I destroy eggman's machine to see the good future I created. There's a lot of tricks to easily travel through the past and future, you can spindash and jump onto a spring and you will still maintain the speed you need to time travel. It all becomes pretty easy once you get the hang of it actually.

You know, as a kid I didn't really like the gameplay that much in Sonic CD but I still thought of it as a good game (probably mostly because of the amazing opening cutscene), I just had no idea what I was supposed to do. Now, playing the game again several years into the future with a better understanding of what I'm supposed to do, the game feels fun again, and not just in an exciting childish way, but I actually enjoy the gameplay. Not as much as maybe some of the other Sonic games but this game holds it's own as one of the best in the franchise regardless because of how unique and fresh it is. Also I love Metal Sonic, it's my favorite Sonic character and my favorite rival/villain, and this was his debut game, so of course I'm going to love this game.

That's the problem with a lot of the classics. They make no effort to teach you how to actually complete them without looking at the manual. Of course, there are some exceptions. Super Mario Bros., for instance. It opens up with Mario on the left side of the screen, facing right, telling the player that they'll be spending the entire game walking to the right. When they see the first Goomba, it's immediately clear from its appearance and movement that this is something you do not want to touch. The player cannot get past this Goomba until they learn how to jump, which they will do quickly by trying the other buttons. Start makes it impossible to move, but also pauses the timer; Select doesn't do anything; and B only has a noticeable effect while moving, which is in and of itself optional. This just leaves A, which, hallelujah, makes Mario jump! The player will probably try to jump over the Goomba first, but will likely fail because of the blocks above them. Luckily, in the process, they will land on top of the Goomba and learn that Mario can murder enemies with his feet. Meanwhile, the ? Blocks above provide a sense of mystery. "What happens if I touch it?" Punching the first block produces a Coin, which gives the player a sense of reward. The next one, though, spawns a Super Mushroom, which is shaped identically to the Goomba. The player tries to defeat it like before, but instead is surprised to discover that it made Mario grow instead. And if they get hit while in this state, Mario will just shrink back down to normal size instead of dying. This immediately tells the player that all objects that come out of blocks are good things. And all that is in the first 100 metres of World 1-1!

When I first played the game, searching through the entire level didn't really appeal to me, and I thought the level design was terrible (springs everywhere in collision chaos, slow pacing in tidal tempest that doesn't reward the player for taking the high path, stardust speedway shooting you in the opposite direction, etc.) It started to grow on me though, the longer I stayed in a level, the longer I got to hear the soundtrack, and then I realized that there are different themes for the past and future level variants, which made me more inclined to hear every version of each song.

I had so many doubts. Nah this can't be good. But then after checking guides on how to beat the game and what's the goal my opinion changed completely. Check out the graphics! The music, animations & cutscenes! The chance to have backtracking, I can go here and here too! Ahh dude so good! So it was about unlocking the good future! Silly me. Now it's one of my fav Sonic games ever! Yes the level design is strange and there are a lot of weird obstacles, but if it's worth it! @DDMania123K aka DDMania What video games should do is a rather philosophical question, but for the most part I'd agree with you. However, I don't think that applies in this case. There's a limit to how much you can encourage exploration without straight up forcing it, and this game already goes to great lengths to show you there's secrets everywhere. But if you're determined to press forward and ignore that the whole level just changed and everything you've went past before has changed and might be worth checking out again, they can't stop you without severely limiting your freedom. The point still stands though that if you choose to actively ignore optional information provided to you and then complain that you didn't get the memo, don't be surprised if it's not going to be optional next time.

Given how the time travel mechanic is implemented into Sonic CD with the time posts and needing to find a place to run for a long enough period, I'd have to strongly disagree. Have you seen how the other classics lay out their levels? Sure, they're not as clumsy and incoherent in design as most of Sonic CD's levels, but they'd never work well with time travel. Constant sharp and linear declines like in Chemical Plant zone, Marble Garden zone, and Hydrocity zone, an extreme lack of being able to backtrack for the vast majority of zones, some levels that just never have high speed moments at all, and roads and terrain that go up and down and all around that never keep your speed for that long. Now imagine trying to pull off time travel in these stages and then try to explore for a machine generator hidden somewhere in the level. I bet that there would be, at a maximum, 4 zones in Sonic 1, 2, and 3K combined that it would be possible. Say what you want about Sonic CD's levels; I won't argue over the quality of the layouts and obstacle placements, but at least the game made it so that no matter where you were, you could still possibly get a good future by time travel and destroying that generator (even if some levels rely too much on high speed freebies for you to time travel).

The free springs are just something else to find. Sure, it's lazy if it's right near a past sign post, but otherwise it's just another exploration element. Sometimes it's fun to pass a double spring, find the past sign post, then try and backtrack to find the springs you remember passing earlier.

I love this video! The game's really divisive nowadays because of the emphasis on exploration. It caters specifically to the people who play Sonic to explore levels by using the momentum to your advantage for platforming. Sonic 3 & Knuckles balances around ALL playstyles, so that's why it's more well-loved and more deserving of the "best Sonic game" title. Personally, I play ALL of the Sonic games to explore like that, so if you're anything like me, then you'll love it more than any other Sonic game.

What Sega should have done was make the big ring available only after you make the good future first. Then players wanting to get all the time stones for the good ending will be more naturally compelled to play it in an exploratory manner. The 50 ring requirement is way easier and makes it too tempting to bypass the other method.

I still hate it, personally, despite grasping the concept and even appreciating what they tried to do. Still, I don't find the gameplay any fun as a Sonic game. The same concept with a different protagonist and different core mechanics might have been super fun and impressive but as a Sonic game I find that it just constantly gets in the way of itself. The level design, as well as the time travel mechanic (both at its core and especially because of the animation that plays while you actually time travel to mask load times) just disrupts your flow and momentum. And how is it good design or fun at all to pass a time travel sign, come to a screeching halt and then slowly and carefully tap on the d-pad so you don't go too fast as you explore the level in order to find a nice place to run (which then lasts seconds until the actual time travel disrupts that yet again)? Aesthetically I also always thought the levels felt random, scrambled and just cobbled together and left unfinished, not very polished at all. And even the music (in both versions of the soundtrack) I mostly do not enjoy. I just don't see the appeal of this game and I find it vastly inferior to the other 16bit Sonics. And no, I'm not looking to just hold right to win and I'm not even of the camp that says that Sonic is 100% about speed. I enjoy the momentum based gameplay. I enjoy even the slower, more methodical parts of Sonic 1 and always have. But CD just gets almost everything wrong in my opinion. It's a cool concept (for another title) and feels like a great prototype or something but really isn't a good game in my opinion.

It sold over 1.5 million copies globally on the Sega CD. That means a handful of people owned one. Also I'm sure someone has mentioned it but the Metal Sonic hologram is just another thing to find and destroy in the past for 100% completion, not required for a good future but it restores harmless animals to all time periods of the level when destroyed. The level after you fight Metal Sonic is the only one that has robot generators but no Metal Sonic hologram. There is an achievement to destroy it in every level along with the robot generator in some editions of the game, which requires you not to collect the time stones as collecting the final stone causes robot generators and Metal Sonic holograms to be already destroyed at the start of the level.

I really don't agree with this review. For one thing, they should have done something to help players understand the intended method of play. Also, realistically this interpretation of the game renders the Future boards of each level meaningless. There's literally no reason to go there. Ever. For another thing, the level design is still kinda crap. There are many places where time traveling sends you somewhere that the Past/Present/Future boards don't line up well, and you can even get stuck in walls in a few spots. For another thing, a lot of the stage gimmicks just aren't fun to interact with. The most notable one being Wacky Workbench's timed spring floors. Some spots, you can't even see them from the series of platforms above, so you have to blind guess on the timing. And in many places, they fling you up into a sort of locked-off chunk of level design that requires you to navigate back downwards and then try to avoid the springing floor again. That is just asinine game design. And finally, considering how long it can take to map out each level and find the robot teleporters and Metal Sonic holograms, they really should have removed that 10 minute time limit.

Not to mention that Sonic CD is still not a difficult game. It's just really annoying. You virtually have to be TRYING to see the game over screen.
