I don't understand how you can be living out of your car for 8 months. A full time minimum wage job which almost anyone can get easy, find a few roommates on craigslist and share a room. Might be poor conditions, but better than living out of your car or on the street.

Dave did more for this poor person than most would have. He did not ridicule, talk down or make her feel bad for calling his show for help. It did not matter that she only made $20K and slept in her car. She was treated with dignity and respect. THEN he gave her info to call a church that works with his Financial peace program. Dave is a class act.

Seriously? You are judging how someone chooses to provide help? Have you ever provided substantial financial support or housed a complete stranger before? I doubt it (I've never personally met anyone who has), but even if you did, you think its reasonable to judge what someone decides to do with their own stuff? My goodness man. Coming from a fellow hypocrite, lets strive to focus less on judging others and turn our attention to judging and fixing our own shortcomings first.

I think she is priced out of anything more than a room. The family situation is suspect. Dad probably didn't like boyfriend and she moved in with him. He may not want to invite her home until she shows initiative and has a better record of wise choices. @@tonyslaughter8954 I don't know who she would marry. Jarred Kushner isn't comin' a callin' for her anytime soon. The available men in her culture in that part of SoCal aren't any prize. @Paul O She never should have lived with the boyfriend in the first place. No commitment there, so no surprise it could end the way it did. He could have kicked her out anytime. A person should not be that dependent on another person, especially a female being dependent on a male with no commitment. It makes the female weak, and being a weak female is a vulnerable position to be in. So no surprise she ended up this way. There was no long term solution in moving in with a guy and making herself dependent on him. Weak.

@@janebrown3587 If I had to be homeless, I'd ask why. She doesn't HAVE TO be homeless. She can drive or take a bus to Tennessee, North Carolina, or many other states where the cost of living is cheaper. She can work a job that allows her to pay for her four walls. (Disclaimer: I DID live out of my car for a while but I had a better plan and cost of living wasn't my main problem. I didn't need to move to a warmer climate. Her case is pretty solid, though, that her location is the problem).
@janebrown3587
@janebrown3587 4 жыл бұрын
@@jmannii I agree she doesn't have to be homeless. It does take changing your mindset. $1500 allows you to live in southern California. It's not fancy, and it's tough as you make it, but people do it. It's a matter of choices and so many people choose not to live within their means or they think they're entitled to more than they work for. $1500 means having to rent a room or even sharing a room and budgeting properly. No extras, no frills and it can certainly be done because it's being done by people every day. It doesn't have to be forever. You know about the "four walls" so you know about Ramsey and what it entails. No eating out, find a second part-time job, avail yourself of churches, food banks and social services when eligible. Nobody NEEDS to have an apartment to themselves - we prefer it, but many people enjoy living in roommate situations their entire lives. $1500 a month living in a car leaves plenty of room to be socking away funds. People do it every day. I have been saying this for decades: we need to bring back the good old Boarding House. I always thought (still do) that they provided a really important homelife and community for the tenants/renters/members. You have someone who oversees the housekeeping and cooks meals at specified times. You can choose to be as solitary as you wish or participate in the 'family' atmosphere. It provides security and companionship. You have your own private room or share a room, but meals are as a household.

Living in your car has become an accepted reality in certain parts of Cali. Since she has a car, she'd be better off driving up to San Fran where unemployment is 3% and minimum wage is near $16/hr. Set up 2-3 jobs so you can work 80 hours a week. Keep living in your car or stay in cheap motels for a few more months so you can pay off all your debts and save some cash. Then line up some jobs in a city like Boulder or Denver where unemployment is low, pay is high, and cost of living isn't insane. Get out of Cali and find some sense of normality. It will be alright.

Even though it's been a long time and I'm now far removed from that life it's something you never forget, once I got some traction and stability I left that lifestyle in the dust because you never want to go back to that ever again, the thought of it is scary. Nowadays, things are going pretty well. These days, If I tell anyone who didn't know me back then that i used live in my car they look puzzled because it doesn't look that way today...thankfully.

For those of you who don’t know where her $$ is going-Newsflash: cars don’t have kitchens or refrigerators. How much would it cost to eat out for 90 meals a month in California? Then factor in that Gas down there is $3.39 a gallon (down from $3.89 a month ago). She is managing to shower and show up presentable to work-so there’s $60-$100/month for a gym membership. Cell phone. Car insurance. It adds up.

Agree and Disagree. There are Other things she could be doing. 1st is that she could be making a lot more money. Also, I love Buckee’s :/). Disagree with the other factors. I AM CURRENTLY living out of a car in CA. The money is HERE, in the city. If she can get her income up she can start saving enough money to make a calculated move; whether that be in her area or to a different area. The level of difficulty would increase exponentially if she went somewhere hot/cold. TX is cold this time of year and humid in the summer. Doing that in a car is insufferable. And even then she’d need enough $$ to float her a couple weeks until her 1st paycheck.

@@nicholasselke5214 I would disagree in saying women suffer more than men in domestic violence. Most men I have seen get attacked by wives never report it because of embarrassment. Where did the old saying come from a boy must never hit a girl but yet we don't say vice versa for girls. I have three generations in my family alone of women beating husbands and children and know many other guys in that situation. I would say it's 50/50 if all domestic abuse crimes were reported. Even in schools there is a epidemic of female teachers having sex with students. Happened quiet a few times in my school but never involving a male teacher with a student. As for women having no money, women cause over 80% of divorces and usually get more than half of the husband money and the man can end up homeless even if he was a good man because the wife gets the house. Here in Orange County rooms are 800 to 1200 and up depending on where. Recently I saw a lower price for the area only to find out it was a shared room! Btw, in San Fransisco, a place recently opened up... some sort of cooperative where you rent a nice bunk, either upper or lower, with shared amenities like showers, internet, kitchens etc. 1600 per month! I kid you not!

I’m from California and I don’t like that place! It’s a horrible place to live financially. The government failed many people there

She needs to move out of CA. I used to live in San Diego and I got priced out. I'm very fortunate because I was able to find an apartment in Tijuana for $300. It was built about 4 years ago so it's still new, has great insulation, and it has it's own parking spot for my car. It's been HARD having to adjust to this area but it beats sleeping in my car! My plan is to live here 2 years, save up my money, and eventually find another part of the U.S. where I can find a good paying job and buy a house. Thank God I found this place because Tijuana rents are also going up since it's so close to San Diego. Any ideas of affordable places to live in the U.S. with good job/career opportunities?

@Natty Fatty Powerlifting Thank you. I'm interested in buying a home in the U.S. I work in San Diego and live in Tijuana so that's how I'm going to pay off my debts and start saving $$$. I have a Bachelor's degree in Public Administration so I can definitely work in the government sector. I am working in Sales right now and I prefer it over a government job. I figured I can work in Sales for another 5 years and then get a government job after that. My goal is to make as much $$$ right now that I still have the energy and drive.

I lived in my car to pay 9k in CC debt. I was in a band and had a music studio to go for for 50$ a month. I look back, about 7 years ago, and boy what a great time! It is all in what you make it. Then I moved into an RV and rented land. Saved 100,000$ and paid 50% of my house. But if worse came to worse I wouldn't mind going back to the mobile life style, even if it was in my car. Again, it is all in what you make it.

Omne Obstat everyone doesn’t go to war when they’re in the military. I was in and I never ever deployed. She doesn’t have any kids so she can see a recruiter, keep her mouth shut about her carpal tunnel and get a foundation. While she’s in, she can use her TA (Tuition Assistance) for free and get a degree. When she gets out, she can use the GI Bill to get an even better degree. She can get herself a house using the VA home loan after her 1st enlistment, pay it off by paying extra on the principal every month and she can rent it out if she has to PCS or rent out a room or two while she lives in it or use it as an AirBNB. She has options! She better use them while she’s single and build a foundation for herself like I did.

Some people in society are missing the main point. Everyone in society starts the conversation with what people are Entitled to and not "What and where do you want to be and How can we get their? What are you Personally Willing to Invest"? When I sat down with my financial advisor, I didn't tell him what I thought the world owed me I shared with him where I wanted to be and we set up a plan to reach my goals. Now I'm one of those rich home owners who hoards money. Yeah, Right, my house is paid for and I have an investment portfolio in mutual funds that provide jobs for millions of people. It's not the haves vs the have nots. It's the doers against the sitters. The Women in Oakland right now trying to seize a house because it's vacant and they want to claim it is a perfect example. The house was just bought by and investment company 2 or 3 days before they moved in illegally and now they won't leave. What is this world coming to. If you want something work for it. Dave Ramsey has some great advice.
