What happens when you open up a jar of sealed river water after 1 year?
The smell was, well, unexpected.
The pressure in the jar was also surprising and was not what I expected at all!
This closed ecosystem, one of many I've put together, is an amazing testament to the resilience of life in extreme environments, and also is a gross reminder of what lives in the water of the river or lake that you may have grown up swimming in each summer, or maybe still swim in today!
Also, upon closer inspection, I'm pretty sure those are copepods, not daphnia, though there could be both swimming around
Jars I like to use for these aquatic ecosystems: amzn.to/46WSuN9
Camera I use: amzn.to/3DmOGqN
Macro lens I use: amzn.to/3Dl3oP6

My theory on the pressure, the seal acted like a one way valve. During summer months when the air expands it seeps out but isn't able to suck back in when the air cools. I've seen military style containers that seal this way. They have a special relief valve and have to be priced apart if it fails.

4:12 Aside from a ton of natural chemical reactions going on in the jar over the course of one year, the simplest and most probable reason for low pressure inside would be it was a warm day when you closed it and a colder day when you opened it.

If I had to decide on a reason for the low pressure, it has more to do with the rate of decomposition vs the rate of growth/photosynthesis. More than likely there were more things alive when the jar was first sealed than now and decomposition, specifically anaerobic decomposition from a low oxygen environment is known to reduce overall volume, which can be a reason for the negative pressure.

The pressure in the jar probably stayed exactly the same, but the air pressure in the room where you had it stored was probably vastly different from when you had originally stored it. Ambient air pressure changes constantly, the sealed jar would be as it was when sealed.

You know the day you sealed it, and the day you opened it. So you could look for the ambient air pressure of those days on a weather site, to see if maybe it was low pressure weather when you sealed it, and high pressure when you opened it. It makes a considerable difference.

The jar was warmer when you sealed it than it was when you opened it thus explaining the vacuum. When you are canning food it goes in the jar hot then sealed. When the jar cools a vacuum builds up thus contributing to long lasting canned foods.

Repent of sin and Trust in Jesus! John 14:6 6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. Matthew 7:13-23 13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. 15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. 21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. John 3:16-21 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

Wow, this is fascinating! It's incredible how nature works. The low pressure vacuum that formed in the jar after being sealed for a year can be attributed to several factors. One possible explanation is the cooling and contraction of air inside the jar as it cooled down over time. As the warm air inside cooled, it lost energy and volume, creating a partial vacuum. Additionally, any microorganisms or organic matter present in the water may have consumed oxygen during decomposition, causing a decrease in gas pressure within the jar. This combination of factors likely resulted in the formation of a low-pressure environment inside the sealed jar. Truly amazing how our environment continuously surprises us!

Besides the outside air pressure when sealed and when opened and temperature changes having effects as most people point out. Another possibility is that the organisms inside had a net negative influence on the gas pressure in the jar over time rather than a net positive influence. In other words they used more of the gas for their own biological processes than were produced, thus creating a vacuum.

Reason behind vacuum is when you leave your jar in hot conditions like sunlight etc water and air in the jar gets expands and pushes the air through the rubber sealing but when temp😢 gets normal air won’t go inside again. I have observed this in my terrarium. Water leaks through rubber sealing in high temperature conditions.

My theory on the low pressure when you opened the jar: Originally, there was 14.7 lbs-per-square-inch of atmosphere in there. When it was sealed up, the existing oxygen was slowly used up, but because you have oxygen-producing plants and organisms in there, they generated more. Not the same pressure as sea level obviously, hence the partial "vacuum." But enough to sustain life. I'm sure the nitrogen was also partially used by whatever is in there and perhaps re-generated partially through the organism's waste. Basically it's own little eco-system. Amazing!
@FischerNilsA

Lotta ways some gas component could have been used up by plants or animals living. Absorbed, chemically bound. Could also be it was a good deal warmer when closed...... I get pops like that when I filled glasses with hot jam or sauce. Where nothing (hopefully) is alive.

My best guess for the negative pressure is that the water may have been warmer, so Containing less dissolved gasses. When it cooled more gasses would dissolve from the trapped air. Having gone into the water, that would make the negative pressure when you open now.
@privatepilot4064
@privatepilot4064 Жыл бұрын
The day you sealed it you should have recorded the ambient barometric pressure and compare it to what the barometric pressure was on the day you opened it. And the temperature of the contents of the jar. Excellent video. Plants are natures way of maintaining and regulating the proper CO2 levels on planet Earth. The more CO2 we create the more plants will flourish. The less CO2 we create the less plants will flourish. It’s really a no brainer.

I think when you sealed up the container, there was a specific volume of gas on top. However, this gas (oxygen, nitrogen, etc.) got used up (to an extent) by the ecosystem and turned (partially) into solid waste (probably the gunk you saw on the top). This conversion would result in lower pressure inside the jar.

1 mol of gas at STP= 22.4 liters. Atomic weight of O2 is smaller than C02. You have plants that consume CO2 and not a whole lot that consumes O2 in there. You created a higher molar ratio of O2 in the environment therefor lower total pressure inside the container. Simplest and most obviously correct answer in my opinion.

its just a theory but: maybe the negative presure is because some of the oxygen and CO2 and other gases un the tank, is now underground or being a part of the animals and plants, wich means, in a solid state those gases ocupie less space, causing some kind of vacum and maybe if more time passes, eventually all the gases run out and then everithing there could die there... of it could just sutain forever

I would bet the seal happened for the same reason a mason jar seals when you’re canning food. You put the river water in warm and as it sat inside the A/C and cooled the pressure lowered inside the jar based on Boyles Law, creating the seal. That would be my first guess. There may have been some pressure reduction from the displacement of oxygen as it was used up, but that would mean another gas, methane or CO2 replaced it and I think gas is gas in terms of pressure. In other words, as long as the column of gas stays the same, the pressure would not change unless the temperature changed, and that’s what I’m going with.

I think the jar was low pressure because oxygen in the air reacted with material in the jar. Roughly 20% of normal air is oxygen, if all the oxygen in the jar reacted with other material in the jar to form oxide compounds, that would reduce the gas volume in the jar by 20%.

I think the pressure lowered because the plants in the jar had absorbed probably all of the carbon dioxide and nitrogen in the air, and water. Using it to build with. Anything the plant(s) had shed would be gobbled up by the decomposition feeders like worms and snails. (Dissolved) Gasses into a solid kind of thing, I don't think that extreme could be explained by barometric pressure alone, And I feel like if there was not a bottleneck of dissolved mineral gasses, it would have grown to an extreme "Off a leash".

The smell of earth broil cuz of temperature buildup under constant indoor lighting and that vapor having a lower density. You must try another jar kept outdoors for 365 days, and if you are in a snowing place - even better

I think the pressure is bc some water evaporated & air wasn’t able to get into the jar to take its place

My guess is maybe some water evaporated and made it suction

The vacuumed seal has got to be due to the various gas reactions that have happened over the year, not a scientist so can’t say which gases would cause a vacuum rather than a pressure build up that causes the lid to pop off, perhaps loss of certain gases only extracted through the “standard” air around the jar caused an implosive rather than explosive effect

Audio bursts and variabilities make it hard to listen to. ALC or processing can help. I had to change channels.. the booming loud, then soft, etc. was hard.

Yep, I went back and listened to this and, for how popular the video has been, I really wish I spent more time optimizing the audio

Bro you put a world inside a jar for a year it made its own eco system damn near its own forecast an everything I would assume after that long the simple answer is the life forms have created a low pressure resulting in the ecosystem wanting to not be opened

If the jar was perfectly sealed and gas didnt escape, i can only assume that N2 was somehow made bioavailable. Otherwise Id have to assume gas somehow escaped... i dont know but its fascinating.

The low pressure is probably from the life sucking the oxygen out of the water and the air trapped in the jar

The only reason they would be a high-pressure carbon structures we're being decomposed to produce CO2 gas which is more voluminous. So considering that there is no excess of oxygen for the oxidation of carbon to occur then no gas would be able to build up. Said production of carbon-based structures and compounds are why the pressure in the jar was less than atmospheric pressure.

I think there was a negative pressure because there is less oxygen inside than outside. And whatever gasses did form exerted less pressure than the atmosphere outside.

The earth goes year after year, sealed in it's own atmosphere without any fresh air from the universe.
