Shouldn't cutting the sprue, mold line/sprue cleanup, assembly, priming and then the packing, taking it to the mail box or post office to mail it have a value for each of these? 🤔 The other thing to consider is the model has to be purchased at full price with taxes and then the person painting it has to do all those steps and then pay income tax eventually on all that. So a 5 minute paint job.... Makes sense. ;)

It seems their business model is to buy already painted/used stuff and then re-sell it as "pro painted" or "well painted" etc. That's how they have such a variety of stuff on their website. I think you guys were a lot harder on the Eldar fighter than you needed to be. I agree. I think Squidmar's definition of a scam is not literally what most of us think. To me a scam is when I did not get something I paid for. On eBay we're likely to see pics, so unless we did not get the mini we ordered it's technically not a scam. A bad deal, a low quality purchase perhaps, maybe even a shit job, but I think scam isn't quite the right word.

The one thing that I think may have been a bit unfair to the sellers is that you don't seem to account for build time. Granted, most of the models were small or simple, but the build time on a dreadnought alone can be multiple hours. I don't know how long it takes to build one of those Dark Eldar flyers, but that would surely factor into the end price as well.

speaking from my own "Pro Painter selling on Ebay" experience, you're kinda beholden to the algorithm in terms of what you title your mini, and it just makes sense to include [Pro Painted] as an easily and often searched term, and also there's hardly anybody really looking for a statement piece mini at an appropriate price, most everybody is just looking for a super cheap deal... and of course nobody ever takes the price of the mini itself into account. on the plus side, it's much more feasible than Etsy, since there's little to no fees for small sellers.

The prices seem so low to me... i'm an independant worker in Europe. As such, i know that on every sale i make, nearly half my price goes on taxes and such. I might be mistaken, but it seems to me that these people work for near to nothing ( i don't know how long it took them to paint these, but the hourly rate looks awful). I’ve been painting some minis and selling them as “pro painted” on ebay. They’re probably about the same quality as the $45 mini you guys bought. I sell single minis for about $50-$60 a piece, which seems like a lot but it’s usually about $7 for the mini, $10 for shipping, $1 for packaging. Then ebay takes 15%. So on a $50 mini I’m making $25, not including paints and basing materials. If I spend 3 hours on a paint job, plus putting it up on ebay and driving it to the post office, I’m looking at less than $10 per hour. It’s fun to do, and selling stuff on ebay us a fun part of the hobby for me. But sometimes tagging things as “pro painted” is almost necessary even if you’re not quite there yet if you want to make anything over $5 an hour.

This is kind of an unfair comparison. All pro painters have different levels you can have them paint to and pay for. And battle ready from a pro painter still looks better than battle ready from a noob. You need to take into account the amount of work that went into a paint job and how much you paid for it.
@C.P.Dickenson

Big fan of Squidmar but this one was a bit unfair. Yes - the quality of these paint jobs isn't amazing but the discussion paid no thought to how much time went into these paint jobs or how much money the painters would be earning by hour. Most of the paint jobs - subtracting the cost of the minis - work out at around $50. That'd be just $25 an hour for a two hour paint job or just $17 for three hours. Since true pros can spend a week or more on a single model it seems unfair to expect the same standard from people either having to work much faster or getting paid a pittance for their labour.

Honestly they all looked pretty good to me. “Professional” has a few definitions in the Cambridge dictionary, one of which is: “used to describe someone who does a job that people usually do as a hobby.” And by that definition they are all “pro”. It’s true some are better than others, but none of them looked like a scam to me. There are some professional artists that I don’t think are very good, but it would honestly be a little mean of me to make a video saying so. None of those minis looked like they were painted by someone who was trying to take advantage of you, especially when you take into account the base price of the mini you got. Even the 15 minute paint job, from the sounds of the other comments, you essentially got the paint job for free after the cost of the mini, so I don’t know what you expected. Maybe you should check out the definition of a scam: “to trick someone into giving you money…in a dishonest and often illegal way.” I don’t think you were tricked, and I don’t think these artists were dishonest, they just didn’t meet your standards.

Like many words, there are multiple definitions of "Professional" and one of the most common definitions for Professional is "a person engaged in a specified activity, as a main paid occupation rather than as a pastime." so the fact that you 'PAID' for these figures means they are "professionally" painted. the only way this would be a scam is if they were NOT painted at all. your personal dislike of a paint job does not automatically make something a scam, just makes you responsible for choosing poorly when spending your money.

Just throwing paint on a model and selling it doesn’t make you a pro, it makes you a con artist and scammer. No hate, just my opinion!!

Fair criticism. But also: unless you pay 500 bucks for the Mini, what do you expect? At a wage of 15 bucks for 10 hours, for a 50 hour miniature, you would get a really nicely painted Mini by an artist, for a steep price and he’d be barely above minimum wage.

I feel like for people who want to start commission work, "pro-painted" in the description is necessary. It's what people search for and nobody is gonna sell "amateur" painted minis for a profit. It's probably a high standard to them at least and they can only become better at painting

@dittmar104 Yeah but you could replace table top ready with all the other pro painted and I'd also be true. It's professional if you think you did professional work. That first model looked just fine, and was priced like most advice I've seen for starting commissions says to do (twice the cost of the mini+ paints) and I don't think calling it a scam is fair. I've wanted to do commissions this year to see if I had the talent for it, but if I knew somebody I looked up to as a painter, would buy my work and then call it a scam in front of thousands of viewers I'd never paint again! If you think your work is worth money than go for it, its always gonna be valuable to you no matter what and if people agree than they'll give you what it's worth.

@@IOnlyWantToWatchIt No. It being professional relies on it meeting professional standards. Pro painted is largely considered to be parade or display models, if a model doesn’t meet that standard it’s just false advertising.

@dittmar104 I don't think there's a standard for pro painted though. There's not a mini painting school, or an apprenticeship to follow to be a good painter, it comes from anyone. These people just put themselves out there hoping they got what it takes, it's not their fault you have to type in "pro-painted" to get caught in the search engine.

Add in any assembly time whatsoever and the average number of productive hours in a work week and 80$ an hour is maybe 150k pretaxes. You are not going to be a millionaire and to sell that many models would be a job in itself so you need to split that in half with the person helping build and photo list and ship them (it came in plastic wrap etc). If it’s a scam, it’s not a good one.

I have to agree. While criticism may be merited, none of the commentary was constructive. Defaming artists as scammers because the work didn't meet their standards should not be acceptable, especially considering how little each of these artists are charging for their works. The Squidmar channel is far too prominent in the community for Emil and Lukas to be so thoughtless in how they speak about others' work.

I used to "propaint" on ebay - yes for a living. Historical not fantasy - - thank you for 3 years livelihood SAGA -unless you are in the first half dozen painted minis on there you were looking at £120 a foot mini tops (normally £50- £60 range for a foot figure decent job with a freehand shield, zenithal highlighting and definitely no nmm)you got in there first with a new faction painted well and it at least tripled. I had a lot of returning customers. I started selling on ebay after I got stiffed on a large Samurai army (we talked kept him in touch with the process then he changed his mind and wanted what I refer to as bubblegum samurai )and realised I was easily getting twice what I was getting on commission so started working solely for 3 existing customers and everything else on ebay.

Yeah, that sort of paintjob is clearly aimed at something like the tournament market. Literally sold at cost with a paintjob that is simple and easy but still has at least some visual style is kind of a steal. Same with the idea that having something done "professionally" means you're going to get a top dollar professional level of service is silly. Loads of professionals offer basic services at budget levels because they are "good enough" for the use case of the people buying them. If you're a professional sign writer, you might charge thousands to have a discreetly designed sign made for a shopfront, or you might just charge a budget price that covers materials and time and involves you slapping some basic typography on it. You're still a professional engaged in professional design.

In our corporate hellscape USA the advice to artists is if you are being paid for your art you should consider yourself a professional. That might be where the mix-up is. Some people consider the word professional to mean that you are being paid for what you do and others expect that professional means a well-trained and well practiced individual.

My honest issue is that "Pro Painted" can mean 2 different things. 1. Painted by a professional painted. This just indicates the quality of the painter, not how well the model was painted. 2. Painted by anyone to a "Professional" standard. As in, display or competition level. This indicates the type of paint job, not the painter.
