Most libraries use the Dewey decimal system. I once worked with someone who had previously worked in a library. She arranged her personal book collection using the Dewey decimal system. I think it's a bit over complicated for most home libraries.

@@kinolibby6580 Omg as a librarian that sounds like a nightmare! xD There are so many ways you can do DDC, like if you have a middlegrade fantasy book written by an English author, you can sort that literature --> middlegrade --> fantasy --> from England, or you could sort it literature --> English literature --> English fantasy literature --> English fantasy literature for children, and so on and so on, we had to use DDC for an assignment and I did books from the same series just to demonstrate how confusing it can be (even after we forget the discrimination and biases built into the system to begin with). Will say I admire the dedication of someone organising their home library after it hahah

@@kinolibby6580 we use Dewey for nonfiction to organize by subject, but fiction is typically alphabetical by author in a separate section. Sometimes genre fiction will also be separated out from general fiction, like a romance section or fantasy/science fiction.

I worked in a bookstore for over 20 years, so my own home library (which is quite extensive) is like the store. I have them sorted into genre (fiction, romance, sci-if/fantasy, mystery, non-fiction) and then within each genre the books are alphabetically arranged by authors surname. I can always find anything with my eyes closed. It is sooooo satisfying having such order…..must be my type A personality!

I live in Greece and it’s so weird to me too! Nowadays the majority of people read translated books but I think it’s really a cultural thing. English is such a dominant language that lots of native English-speakers sort of think of it as the “default”. I used to live in the uk and they would pretty much never show foreign tv programmes on the tv, but here in Greece we have a really nice balance of both. You can turn on the tv and watch French or german documentary on one channel and then an Italian drama series on another, Greek comedy on another one and English movie on another. I really like it

@@nwondering8732I'm like ..... that's basically the majority of everything for countries that don't have English as their native language😂 films with subtitles are sooooo normalised in the Netherlands😂 basically every film that's not Dutch or a movie that's targeted towards children (only dubbings we allow) would be categorised as a *film with subtitles/foreign film* Cinemas in the Netherlands literally show 90% of the time films with subtitles😂😂😂 the only exceptions are films for children since they will be dubbed in Dutch or legit Dutch made movies😂 Disney & Pixar (and like movies such as The Mario Bros Movie) are both available as subtitled and dubbed😂 With books is depends on your age: for instance for young children we have soooo many books available that are translated/foreign & native based. For teenagers and young adolescents the majority of the books will be translated. But for adults I think a lot of books would be written by native authors. But there's also a huge variety of translated literature available. But for book nerds around my age we've become snobs😂 since we prefer to read books in their native language which 99% of the time happens to be English😂 apparently we love reading in a foreign language rather than our own native language. (I only started doing it because it was cheaper😂 and now I'm teaching English)

Organization is so personal. I (trigger warning) am a rainbow shelf person. I remember my books best by what the covers look like. When in rainbow order, I can find the books I am looking for way more quickly. I do keep my series on a separate shelf so they don’t get broken up but I also don’t own many series. 🌈 I’ve tried other methods, but I always go back to rainbow. I also find that similar books are in similar colors anyways. My thrillers are mostly all balck/grey. Mental health tend to be green/blue. My non-fiction are mostly tan/white.

I now have an excel spreadsheet with all the last names of authors on my shelves in alphabetical order and then when I get a new book from a new author I just put it at the end of the list and then sort the row by alphabetical order again and it just goes to where it should be. My mom is super, SUPER into books, we have I think four bookshelves in our main living area plus a super tiny one for toddler books (there are no toddlers currently living in the house, but they're still good to have), plus one regular-sized bookshelf in each of the bedrooms. The ones in the living area (except for the toddler books) are sorted the way libraries do it, by genre, and then within the genre alphabetically by author's surname. It works so well! If there's ever a book I need to find, I can ask my mom and she knows exactly where it is. This is unrelated, but I also wanted to mention we have a little free library in our front yard that she runs, that's how into books my mom is.

That is how my bookshelf is organized! A few of the fun subsections I have: Stoicism, Mid-century children's illustrated verse/poetry, and on Color. That said, I realized that most fiction I've read I do not own a physical copy. Even a few of my favorite ones. Sometimes it takes organizing books by genre to realize your favorite reading interests and what type of books you like in physical form rather than ebooks or audio!

i usually organize them from largest to smallest. Ordering genres with tilting the books little bit . Because I have better memory for format and whole apparence of the book, cause i read only occasionaly. This order is more visually appealing and practic for me.

I’ve personally decided the ultimate organisation system is diving books first into genre, then organising the books in each genre by alphabetical. Then it works for if you want to pick out a book, or just need to find one you are already set on. If you want to find one you just need to think what it’s main genre is, then find it in the whichever section it is in depending on the author’s surname. I know genre can be subjective but it’s unlikely you’ll have to search through more than 3 genres before you find it. The only drawback I’ve thought of is if you are the one organising it it’ll obvs take some time, but you could always just go off what genre Waterstones or some other website classes it as.

I did my kid’s books in rainbow, it actually made them both read more and put them back in place! Highly recommend for children’s books! The rest we actually arrange by the author’s culture, so American, British, Scandinavian, European, African and Asian, all placed roughly like the world map. 🌍

Alphabetical, by author, is definitely my favorite way to arrange my own library of books. Color just seems silly to me and more for aesthetic as opposed to utility. Genre would be hard because there are books that fall under more than one genre/subgenre. It's interesting to see what people choose. I know, if I had a much smaller collection of books, I might be more "adventurous," but I just can't afford to be, considering the amount I have.

The library looks so cool, I absolutely love it! Not a criticism, just an aboservation: as a non native English speaker and someone who reads in two languages, having translated books as a category is bonkers to me. So many of the books I read in my native language are translated from English, so if I organize my books with translated books as a category I will have one huge clump of translated books and one shelf of novels and poetry.

i’m in my mid-teens and i’ve been reading since i was 2, but i had a bit of a break from that during the covid period.. i’m now starting to get back into reading and i just got a new bookshelf yesterday! i filled it exclusively based off of vibes, except for my stand-alones are mostly together, Rick Riordan has a shrine at the top, and my non-fiction and music related books are all together at the bottom! being able to hear about your shelves and everyone’s in the comments is really inspiring me to expand my collection because reading just makes me so happy!! happy reading 📚

I arrange my bookshelf by genre and then by “colour” and size within the genre, and I mean that in the broadest sense, light colours on top and then in hues bluish and purple tones on one side reddish orange colours together, and whites, beige and black tones together. And the same with alle the other genres. I love colour arranging because I remember the books by booktones.

Organization my books by my obscure categories is my therapy and here's a few suggestions for a pt 2 first letter there's in it also last chapter and pages number price written on the back publish year those some of mine and my 1068 are happy about it and so is my pocket as books are expensive also by ABC of name but when u do that take series that have a *series name* and then a unique title like Percy Jackson and *blah blah*

I loved the last part where you kinda explained why it was more satisfying than maybe the more aesthetic choices and tbh that's what so rewarding about organizing your own library--you get to make choices that reflect you as reader and I think that's so neat (like the Joan Didon shrine and the Poetry->Shakespeare Poetry->Plays transition)! Congrats on the new setup :D

As a bookstore employee, the best way to organize your books is by publishing house, then by collections (like with Penguin, all Penguin Classics are all together, etc.). Most satisfying and very clear to easy to find each book.

I honestly have a very complicated organization strategy all of my series are separated out and placed on their own bookshelf alphabetically by author. then all of my non-fiction is separated out and alphabetized. then all my other books are separated into main categories and alphabetized and placed down on their own shelves then I turn all of my read books backward so I force myself to read new books. It is a mess but I need it this way as it somehow helps me read new books and having them separated and all over the place keeps me from getting bored. I need an excel doc to keep everything in place. I think I just like making my life difficult.

I think overall it depends on what you like. I gave a friend who likes to organise hers to look like a rainbow and it looks stunning. I like to separate mine into fiction and non-fiction and then go alphabetically as it makes it easier for me to find the book I'm after. Do what makes you happy at the end of the day.

As someone having problems with visual noise, I came to rainbow-ish organizing naturally. But I don't do one big gradient. I sort my book by themes/vibes. And then put them in a color-coordinated order within a theme. This way I can navigate my books AND not feel overwhelmed looking at them. Combination of small gradients makes my bookshelves look way calmer. Maybe someone else also finds it helpful.
