Fingernail polish makes some awesome paint jobs if airbrushed. Also, if you use Mr. Hobby leveling thinner it will thin it much better. A little tip too. Clear fingernail polish is ideal for gluing in windshields and headlights on models won't show and will not craze the plastic. Have a great weekend buddy. Terry

Isopropyl doesn't work with lacquers. Iso is mostly for water based paints. White spirit should do better. Although dedicated lacquer thinner should be preferred. You can also try a tiny drop of nail polish remover. Same goes with brush clearing - nail polish remover stolen from the Wife does the trick. And about sealing - two words: hair spray! 🙂

I have used nail polish on model cars and Hot Wheels-Matchbox diecast customs. I believe nail polish is lacquer based. I thinned with Lacquer Thinner and apply with airbrush. I clean the airbrush with the same thinner. I would use a paint brush only for small or tiny parts. Clean the brush with Lacquer Thinner or Acetone.

Acetone dilutes, and eventually removes, nail polish. You have to be very careful as acetone can melt the plastic as well. You can put your sprue bits in acetone, or even extra thin glue (methyl ethyl ketone) to make sprue goo. This can be used as a filler or to use in a mould to make spare parts. Hope this helps. Interesting video as usual

What I’m looking to paint is one of those solar powered walkways lights. You know the kind that comes in flat black plastic. I’m looking to paint the interior surfaces with some kind of reflective paints. Something better than just flat black plastic. I’m thinking about a high gloss white paint that I can cover the outer lower end of the clear part so it will better bounce the light back up towards the top. And paint the underside of the top around the led light white too. Whatever paints are most reflective. Are there any paint colors that are highly reflective? Something that looks like the Mylar coating on the inside of a plastic snack bag. I was just wondering how they created Mylar in the first place. Would be nice to be able to add a Mylar coating to existing plastics.

You know, I bet if you can figure out how to thin it, the gloss on the red (and yellow as well, I imagine) does a great job representing that sheen that some red and yellow aircraft have. Wouldn't need to fuss with clear coating too terribly much. Hrm. I wonder, then, could you get around having to do all the crazy polishing on car models with nail polish instead, again with the thinning figured out?

Actually, years ago (I think it was in the beginning of the century) there was an article in FSM (Finescale Modeller) about using nail polish for making models (true Airbrush though), and of course the big advantage (then) was the huge plethora of "exotic" colours. As for behavior it should act like any laquer paint, which doesn't say that much of course since laquer paint mostly used in spray cans.

A trick that nail polish enthusiasts use when their polish is too thick: one of two drops of 100% acetone in a bottle thins it great. The the brushes that are included with polish are not meant for long strokes over large areas. Use the same paint brushes you'd use with lacquer.

I’d guess like model paints, you need the right thinner. T’wife wandered in half way through to offer me a cup of tea, and said you need acetone to thin the nail polish. I imagine if it’s thinned and sprayed in light coats it should be OK, as some model specific lacquer paints can be a bit “hot” if you’re heavy handed. Anyway, thanks for confirming my suspicions about using nail varnish, as I have two bottles of Ultra3 “crazy” which is a coppery/bronze metallic with golden highlights - not exactly a colour shift like some SMS paints but similar - which was bought for a 1/12 Tamiya Suzuki Hyabusa, although it might go on a spare 1/6 scale Tamiya Katana, with gloss black stripes for a ‘Tiger’ paint job.

This was a very funny video; I'd have guessed just about any woman in your vicinity could have told you that to thin ot clean nail polish, you need something much "hotter" than alcohol (no matter if it's ethanol or isopropanol). Acetone is one possibility, another is ethyl acetate, which is also used in "mild" nail polish removers. Ethyl acetate occurs naturally in low concentration in fruits like apples and pears, much like its cousin isoamyl acetate aka banana oil. Like limonene these are afaik considered relatively non-toxic and not carcinogenic, and are also great as liquid cement. Which of course also means that when used as paint thinner, you risk melting the plastic. This is no different than using old-school lacquers I suppose; you could prime with something that can withstand it, or maybe just apply extremely thin coats with an airbrush. Drying time would probably be near-instantaneous, and the bond to the plastic would be extremely strong. I must say it made me cringe when I saw you apply it unthinned with the lid brushes. :-) I have used ethyl acetate as a decal softener in some cases, it's quite effective IMO. I would avoid nail polish remover though, as it contains glycerin, oils etc to be skin-"friendly". In some countries it seems to be available in pure form as a cleaning agent. (Alas, in Denmark it's almost unobtainable - while lacquer thinner containing acetone, toluene and other unpleasant and smelly solvents is available everywhere. Strange.) The reason alcohol doesn't work is that alcohols are polar solvents, whereas the other solvents - that also dissolve plastics and oils - are non-polar solvents.

I was gonna paint the pilots with that green colour (I think that was the only one not used in the video) then realised they’d look horrendous so left them off the model

Hi Matt, it could never work but made a good challenge. I also don’t see where nail polish has a use?? Colours and finishes are very well covered by all the companies and we have enamels if we need a different look and all work and thin well for our use. I doubt the nail polish will thin well as it’s just not made too and it’s made to dry as fast as possible and thinning will affect that. Plus of course it looked horrible!? Thats not your building that’s the polish. And it’s very expensive on ml v ml basis. Brush budget should need increasing as well?? Bob England

Tons of car guys use nail polish for the candy and metallic colors. It hardens really well and can be thinned easily.

as some of the other commenters have mentioned, there are uses for these kinds of paints and perhaps with a little more experimentation i'll figure out how to use it for myself lol

You need cellulose or lacquer thinner - of course there is a risk that thinned out nail Polish will melt the plastic.

Nailpolish thinned with Mr Hobby leveling thinner gives a good result. · thinner 1 paint, shake well and let it rest for 5 min when it is a NON metallic color. Thinned with Tamiya Laquer thinner with retarder gives the best result, smooth as a baby,s bum and i used a €30,- Airbrusch from Fengda for it with a 0.3 needle at 25-30 psi.

I am stunned at how well you did with the nail polish! They're designed to fill in ridges in your nails so that's why they're so gloopy. I imagine you might fare a little better with some different brands. There are some that are a little thinner but not a whole lot
