I remember the transparency of the yellow being a right pain in the ass so imperial fists was a very brave choice dude. You nailed it even with the obvious difficulty of using some old-school colours. Pretty much all of my second-edition marines like this have the same mould slip so you aren't alone with that.

Don’t miss those paints at all. In the 80s and 90s I relied mostly on apple barrel craft paints for decent coverage. Good job as always.

Mold slips were more common then, however I've found the (lighter than today) grey plastic is softer to file, sand, scrape and cut. Nice video, strong finish, great model.

great job! and they really nailed sunburst yellow! 4 coats sounds about right, then fixing any black line mistakes with white then another 4 damn coats of yellow!! .. They should have called it a Sunburst Yellow glaze!

when i got into 40k (2nd ed) i picked imp fists as they where my favorite from space crusade very soon after trying to paint with yellow i changed my mind to blood angels well until i visited my local gw and saw the space wolves. i always liked the snakebite leather and loved polished blue , amythest purple and glisning green

This gives me a horrible flashback to 11 year old me trying to make those paints work. No wonder I ended up using model car paint for all my miniatures. I think you did a wonderful job given the materials you had to work with and I doubt anyone would blame you for succumbing to the use of modern paints. I think it would be awesome if you did a retro series of videos using modern paints and showing your take on that era of warhammer and of course leave out the gag reflex green bases.

I am thankful I picked up the hobby in 2017, its so much easier to paint the color yellow with modern paints. Then again yellow, red, and orange have always been kind of squirrly colors to get just right.

Nostalgia is all well and good, for example when I visit Warhammer world and I can look at the old minis in the cabinets, like seeing an old bacolite (not sure about that spelling lol) phone in a museum, but it don’t mean I want to go back to it either. Old paints were awful with a few exceptions which is why I think everyone used to paint their minis the same I lost count of all the blood angels I played against when I was younger. And that is definitely why there aren’t any imperial fists out there because it was just pure torture to paint them. A brave effort to give it a go Andy well done, and I’m glad you were able to finish it in a way that made you happy. As for goblin green yeah same as my previous statement all well and good for it’s time but I for one love modern minis and the fact they no longer look or get painted like toys, some times all the detail can be a pain when it takes a few hours to finish bits that no one looks at , but that is also why they don’t look like toys, and goblin green bases imo was one of the worst things for making people dismiss our hobby and all our hard work building and painting as “toy solider” rather than an actual artistic hobby or pursuit.

Oh man, those yellow layers! I have heard that doing an under-coat of pink can help yellow stand out better, so might have been able to mix up red and white to put a layer on before the yellow, but I haven't tried it myself to see how well it would work.

@@MediocreHobbies i have also heard that there were some citadel inks back in the day with quite a lot of pigment coverage, so maybe inking the yellow or mixing a little in in with the yellow could have helped. I know some people who used to do a layer of snake bite brown before doing yellow for their imperial fists

That brought back some painful memories. Yellow was awful as was Blood Red. If you remember the Tyranid Warrior I told you about that was Blood Red. I undercoated it black and dry brushed it white... It took a lot of coats as well and a red ink. That's the bit you missed from retro painting, the inks. The red ink did actually save the project just like your wash did. I could still see green until you washed it. Good video I now need to go back to rehab. 🤣🤣🤣

Once I saw the paints you were going to use after you said Imperial Fist I honestly thought if they are like the old yellow paints it will take 6 or 7 layers ha I was close :-P I remember when my friend got third edition starter set (that is how I got into minis) I helped him paint we were both kids and the difference in our painting was just funny I was very much trying to make things look nice and correct and he was more of a dip the whole model in paint style lol (they were his models) it was still expenisve as hell back in the day.

As someone whose first time in the hobby was from 1989 to 1994ish, I too am not a fan of Goblin Green bases. It is surprising how sometimes the hyper saturated colours and Goblin Green bases common in the early '90s seem to be the only style people recognise as retro or Oldhammer when there actually was a variety of styles on display, at least until GW started getting particularly corporate about how their miniatures and games were presented.

Goblin Green wasn't my go-to either. In the late eighties my first marines were finished with PVA, sand and the Rogue Trader era base rim colour of choice in all the White Dwarf advertisements; I can't remember now if it was Spearshaft Brown or Snakebite Leather? Memory fails me.

When painting something predominately yellow, you really need to put down a base coat of bone or a peachy pink color, otherwise you'll be painting the same spot for five hours!

So you can use retro paints and get easier yellow but first paint him flesh tone then put yellow on top of that .

as happy I am with my nostalgia paint I find myself grabbing my vallejo of the equivalent color instead. I got used to the coverage of modern paint. every review talks about how poor the nostalgia coverage was and I thought "how bad could it really be?" turns out pretty bad.

@@MediocreHobbies my first ever miniatures I did were a company of death wing terminators I bought from Bromley Games Workshop in 1997. I knew nothing of thinned paints at 14 years old. Those boys were a gloopy mess! They would have horrified even Papa Nurgle... And I still own them. Thank god for my Cult of paint airbrush, for drybrushing and for washes! 😃👌
