Today we play CK3 witha bit of a twist. Usually this game is about using every advantage possible to get ahead, but not this time. We're going to be a morally good person and see if we can survive the brutal medieval era. We're also playing it such that we're always saying yes to everything as well so as to not disappoint people. Unfortunately, we get progresively less nice as the game goes on..
Is it possible to survive in CK3 by being the NICEST PERSON?

Came to make this comment. Kant sorts into the "deontological ethics" bucket, whereas someone like Mill resembles a bit more how most modern people think. (Consequentialism)

A perfect embodiment of the fact that the people that are often the happiest and most outwardly giving may in fact be struggling inside. Mr Nice Guy himself was in fact depressed for most of his life but in spite of that had many friends and loved ones and was charitable and understanding kind to everyone.

18:30 that made my day 😂😂😂 "barra" literally means "go" but when you say it in that specific tone it's basically meant to show frustration, and it's definitely a nationwide thing

I remember now a song from Black Hawk Down. Isn't it literally called "Barra Barra"? If you know the song I'm talking about (fantastic movie and maybe even better soundtracks, Hanz Zimmer and all that too), what does it mean in that context? The set location is another but the song I'm certain is at least Arabic or Tuareg or Northern African (can't remember)
@cba2make1up

@@SebHaarfagre I've just seen Black Hawk Down not too long ago and that song absolutely caught me off guard 😂 Yeah it's literally called that, it's an Algerian/Arabic song by Rachid Taha. I listen to him regularly along with a bunch of other old school Algerian Raï singers, worth checking out! I could be wrong about the meaning as the Algerian and Tunisian dialects are intelligible but still very different, but I believe it meant "out/outside" and saying it twice is just emphasizing it. In the context of the song Taha is describing the sad state of life in Algeria at the time (outside, on the streets), as it's actually a pretty depressing song referencing the civil war of 1991-2002.

Welcome to the tenth day of historical facts! What an achievement! As requested by "Kris" I'm gonna talk about Selim the Grim. Selim I was born in October 1470 and died 22 September 1520. Also known as Selim the Grim or Selim the Resolute was the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1512 to 1520. Despite lasting only eight years, his reign is notable for the enormous expansion of the Empire, particularly his conquest between 1516 and 1517 of the entire Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt, which included all of the Levant, Hejaz, Tihamah and Egypt itself. On the eve of his death in 1520, the Ottoman Empire spanned about 3.4 million km2 (1.3 million sq mi), having grown by seventy percent during Selim's reign.Selim's conquest of the Middle Eastern heartlands of the Muslim world, and particularly his assumption of the role of guardian of the pilgrimage routes to Mecca and Medina, established the Ottoman Empire as the pre-eminent Muslim state. His conquests dramatically shifted the empire's geographical and cultural center of gravity away from the Balkans and toward the Middle East. By the eighteenth century, Selim's conquest of the Mamluk Sultanate had come to be romanticized as the moment when the Ottomans seized leadership over the rest of the Muslim world, and consequently Selim is popularly remembered as the first legitimate Ottoman Caliph. One of Selim's first challenges as Sultan involved the growing tension between the Ottoman Empire and the Safavid Empire led by Shah Ismail, who had recently brought the Safavids to power and had switched the Persian state religion from Sunni Islam to Shia Islam. In 1514 Selim I attacked Ismail's kingdom to stop the spread of Shiism into Ottoman dominions. Selim and Ismā'il had exchanged a series of belligerent letters prior to the attack. On his march to face Ismā'il, Selim had 50,000 Alevis massacred, seeing them as enemies of the Ottoman Empire. Selim I defeated Ismā'il at the Battle of Chaldiran in 1514. The Battle of Chaldiran was of historical significance: the reluctance of Shah Ismail to accept the advantages of modern firearms and the importance of artillery proved decisive. After the battle, Selim, referring to Ismail, stated that his adversary was: "Always drunk to the point of losing his mind and totally neglectful of the affairs of the state". Selim then conquered the Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt, defeating the Mamluk Egyptians first at the Battle of Marj Dabiq (24 August 1516), and then at the Battle of Ridanieh (22 January 1517). This led to the Ottoman annexation of the entire sultanate, from Syria and Palestine in Sham, to Hejaz and Tihamah in the Arabian Peninsula, and ultimately Egypt itself. The last Abbasid caliph, al-Mutawakkil III, was residing in Cairo as a Mamluk puppet at the time of the Ottoman conquest. He was subsequently sent into exile in Istanbul. In the eighteenth century, a story emerged claiming that he had officially transferred his title to the Caliphate to Selim at the time of the conquest. In fact, Selim did not make any claim to exercise the sacred authority of the office of caliph. A planned campaign westward was cut short when Selim was overwhelmed by sickness and subsequently died in the ninth year of his reign aged 49. Officially, it is said that Selim succumbed to a mistreated carbuncle. Some historians, however, suggest that he died of cancer or that his physician poisoned him. Other historians have noted that Selim's death coincided with a period of plague in the empire, and have added that several sources imply that Selim himself suffered from the disease. On 22 September 1520 Sultan Selim I's eight-year reign came to an end. Selim died and was brought to Istanbul, so he could be buried in Yavuz Selim Mosque which Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent commissioned in loving memory of his father. Sultan Selim I had conquered and unified the Islamic holy lands. Protecting the lands in Europe, he gave priority to the East, as he believed the real danger came from there primarily. Hope you enjoyed! :) I'm still a little sad I couldn't join the sunday game, but I will try next week again. Hope everything works out then and I don't get kicked by the game.

Woah, you can play CK3 without acting like a terrible human being?! Write that down!! I think I prefer your challenge to Simo's, as you actually enforced a set of rules enforcing moral behavior where Simo and Koifish kinda just played it for laughs. I think an interesting variation of this would be to restrict a run not by contemporary standards of morality, but instead by some religious law or cultural expectation for a righteous ruler at the time. There's already a video of a challenge following the ten commandments, but the interpretation of the "Thou shalt not kill" rule wasn't really in line with how Christians practiced at the time, a lot of wars were sanctioned by the Papacy.

Just offering a third option in cases where someone is trying to seduce your character, and you want to be nice and not cheat on your wife: if your faith allows multiple marriages (which yours does in in this playthrough) just marry the new person (assuming they're single.) Problem solved, no cheating involved! Edit: Wait you actually did that, nevermind! ^_^ Edit 2: "I don't need mercinaries anymore, I have friends" sounds like a quote from some kind of Shounen anime... Edit 3: This is also pretty much how I play the game usually, I look around, find a jerk, steal their land for the sake of the people, and eventually have a horrendous border-gore country. That said, if some dude keeps telling my character they're an idiot every time I try to write them a nice letter, I consider that justification for war (looking at YOU Kajit emporer who keeps harrassing my poor Bosmer dude - once we're done beating up that pirate who keeps abducting my courtiers, you're next...)

It is day 123 since I asked you to do the challenge with Croatia in VIC 3 but in one of the videos, a good person named Andraip (Thanks for all the help) said it has a few flaws so it's time to correct them. So when you start playing as Croatia you have 15 years to get your independence, after that you cannot ally, get in a defensive pact, and you cannot be under any kind of protection and you must rival these powers as soon as possible: Austria, Russia, Serbia, Montenegro, Ottomans, and all nations from the Italian boot. You also must embargo all those nations and cannot enter their custom union nor can they enter yours. You cannot be in an alliance with any of the top 10 nations, including a defensive pact custom union, or protectorate, but you can trade with them. AI must be put on the default settings in case it isn't. If you ally let's say Portugal, and later on they get into the top 10, you must break the alliance. You also must stay monarchy all the time. Form the Danubian state with Croatia following these rules. (FYI incase I didn't make it more specific, you cannot join anybody's custom union you must always at all times have your own market)

"He's nice, but he's not an idiot", but you did not consider the concept of boundaries much in this run. Saying yes to everything may not in fact be nice, and is also how you get in situations like having to pick between two lovers. Similarly, if you want to be nice, how do you arrange marriages? Is it "nice" to set your toddler up with an old man for an alliance to help you win a war against a liege that has treated your family poorly the entire time? The rabbit hole is so deep when you start to think about it Incidentally, love the characterization of just wanting to talk about diplomacy when exchanging letters with other rulers but not realizing they don't care. "Sorry, buddy, really hyperfixating on the intricacies of courtly etiquette atm, didn't mean to make you feel stupid". Been there PS: Kant sucks :(

You should try to follow different ethical frameworks. Like, virtue ethics: you start with the virtues of your religion and follow what they would do. Consequentialism: you do whatever leads to the best outcomes. Duty ethics: you have strict rules that you must follow regardless of context.

Good and bad are social constructs created paralel with our natural emotions which helped us survive, with that being said, we no longer hunt or chill in the woods out of necessity, so following them most of the time is out of personal gain. Life is not far from a video game with many more features, and as soon as you start living in a 5d world you will dominate everything you touch.(no its not manipulation as everybody does it, the only difference you will be aware of it and you could argue that in return that could make you a "better" person.)
