I did the same thing last summer in London. Unfortunately my plant died from sun damage. Rookie error. I really like your avocado , they are so informative.

My plant was an indoor avocado seedling 3 years old and was very similar in size to the one you planted. I didn't recognize the sun damage till it was too late. One side of the trunk turned a reddish brown and the leaves kept dropping.

Aw, too bad. Did you have an extra hot and sunny year? I was a bit worried for mine too, but it was partly shaded by the house.

Mine droppes a lot of the ”original” leafs, but the new ones was more resistant.

Yes it was the very hot summer of 2022. I kept it in part shade. I didn't expect it to get sun damage from part shade. I have had more success this summer. I slowly introduced the seedlings into the sun. This year I kept the seedlings in pots outside. Hopefully they will be conditioned enough to go into the ground after winter.

Brave! I live in southern california and I tried importing an Irwin Mango tree from Florida into my state, but once I put it in a large pot it began to get dry brown edges to the leaves and now leaves are falling off :( sometimes these climate changes just wreak havoc on even established plants!

Thank you! Im sorry to hear that :(. Is the climate much diferent from Florida and California? Maybe it just needs some time, hope it recovers!

Hi, thanks for these avocado videos, they are great. I have a tree that must be about 4 or 5 years old, it struggled in our bedroom for most of that time and dropped all of its leaves multiple times. When I thought it was basically dead I put it outside last spring and it recovered beautifully, now it's double its height. Now it's back inside but near a window and in fact it's getting a bit too big for the room and I was considering leaving it out during winter but I'm not sure it could take it. I'm in France (hardiness zone 7 or 8) and I think we have bit too many sub-zero days during winter, this winter it went down to maybe -4 during a few nights. I was wondering if there is a point where a bigger tree is better able to take the cold or maybe if you covered it up with a knitted woolen sweater or something?

Hello, thanks for watching! I would be careful with below freezing temps. Some avocado variaties can handle that, but it might be hard. I have seen people use christmas lights in the trees for small smount of heat, and bubble plastic to wrap around it. Takes a bit of work tho.

I was worried with the tree growing there it would eventually block the sun from your plant room but I guess it didn’t matter in the end.

Where I live, it most likely cannot. Because we can get -20c if it gets really bad. Maybe in southern most sweden, it can with some protection 😅

they need fast draining soils to survive they can't tolerate soggy waterlogged soils especially when it's cold

I have seen palm trees in Uppsala. Perhaps growing a drymifolia variety of avocado would survive in your climate with a little bit of frost protection. I use remay cloth with incandescent christmas lights to keep my outdoor avocados and citrus alive.

Interesting! How much diference does that make for the temperature around the tree? If we have really bad luck we can have -20c for 2 weeks here 🥶. I have read about some varieties that can take -10c, but only for a short period of time, if I remember correctly.
@ragnaraxelson59

@@NordicPlantLover -20c would be too cold for this method. The ground would freeze and kills the roots. I suggest looking for Reed avocado scions. They have had good success fruiting in containers 20gal or larger.

Hello. Yeah, it’s hard to find. Either you find serious outdoor avocado growers with lots of experience. But that doesnt always translate to us indoor growers. Or people with 1-2 tear old trees.

@@ragnaraxelson59 I've heard there is more than one in London. I've been told London is warmer than the surrounding area because of all the bricks and concrete storing heat and slowly releasing it. I don't know how true that is but it is as good an explanation as any for how Avocado ls growing and fruiting there!
