I Played and Ranked Every 2D Zelda Game | Are They Worth It?

Pretty sure that the 2 DS games have a hack that let you use a more standard control scheme, that will probably make the experience alot more enjoyable

Four Swords Adventures on Gamecube is actually very playable in single player and definitely worth experiencing even alone. Obviously if you can get other people to play with you that's even better but even at the time that was a tall order cause you needed them all to have GBAs of their own, they HAD to be the OG model and not one of the newer ones, and they all needed to ALSO have a GBA-GC connection cable. It was just not feasible. And even then while it's technically playable with a standard gamecube controller, it's obviously designed to have the two screens of the TV and the GBA, and some parts can be way more difficult cause it's trying to bounce between the two screens on one screen. It's like a Wii-U game several years before the Wii-U was a thing. But it's certainly one of the prettiest Zelda games, one of my top Coop games, and probably one of my top 2D Zeldas. But good god that barrier to entry.

Between worlds you can buy the items you rent however if I remember correctly you have to make certain in game progress to buy them

Zelda 2 is actually pretty good. I'm convinced the hate it receives all stems from people just rehashing that they've been told to hate it.

Its also incredibly hard and unfair. But i agree genuinely a really good game, part of me wishes they ended up making more games like it so that it could have been refined like the gameplay of z1 got refined with a link to the past

@Deltabolster I'll give it hard - but I don't know that I'd call it unfair. Unfair by standards set from the SNES onward, maybe...but not by the standards of the time. Not that "standards of the time" is a dismissal of criticism. It's fair to judge hiw something aged. But criticisms (and praise) should be tempered by those considerations.

I played it when it was new and a few years later. Pretty sure I beat it. Still hate the game, but in the past couple years I’ve actually realized it was a great concept. The ideas were all really good. Maybe if the developers were given a few more months to work on it. Or years and released it on SNES. It could’ve been a great game. As it is, it is a terrible game. There’s a fan remake that keeps most of the game the same, but adds, changes or fixes things. It’s still not great, but it’s definitely better. All the original had to do was make the story progression make sense without a Nintendo power or Nintendo hotline and it would be a half decent game. Fix a few more things and it’d be fully decent.

2D Zelda is the BEST Zelda. And I say that as someone who played Zelda 1&2 in the 80s. Everyone loved Ocarina of Time when it came out, everyone hated Majora’s Mask when it came out but now they lie to themselves and say it’s their favorite. Maybe it’s because I get turned around and lost easily, but I didn’t love Ocarina, basically hated Majora, and had to quit Wind Waker pretty early because it was somehow both boring and infuriating at the same time. Minish Cap is a game I’ve never played but has always intrigued me. It looks great; I really need to try it.

@@enigmazero8624 i gotta say i do like ocarina, love majora as its probably the best 3d title and beat ww for the first time a few days ago and really enjoyed most of it except the triforce quest. But i do in general prefer the 2d titles actually, while I hahent played the oracles they intrigue me but albw and la are definitely some of the best zelda games and then minish cap is my personal favorite i dont think its possible to make a better zelda than minosh cap

minish cap is not as good as people say, I say every mainline 2d zelda that came out after is better, but some of that is just TFH bias. Also, some of the games I regard as the best are both 2D and 3D, and some of the ones I regard as the worst are both 2D and 3D, although the 2D games are generally lower, but that's also partially because there's twice as many of them.

Zelda 2, The adventures of Link was a great game in its own right and we still had a lot of fun playing it when did first came out so I really don't understand all the hate it gets

Alttp is the quintessential Zelda game. Everything comes from it . Best soundtrack in the series.

As a kid I definitely enjoyed Ages more than Seasons, but it really does come down to whether you enjoy combat more or puzzles. I still think Ages has about the best puzzles in the series, though my memory is a bit outdated. All in all I liked the pair as much as Link's Awakening and I think your list is pretty spot on overall.

Tri force heroes is almost as fun online, you just have to do some homebrew setup, as the nintendo servers are down. Four swords adventures it probably the most solid singleplayer experience out of the 3 multiplayer zelda games. OG four swords can also be played online through NSO, but it's not the best version, it's missing a bunch of content from the anniversary edition.

Phantom Hourglass is only interesting because it is a direct sequel to Wind Waker. Spirit Tracks, on the other hand, is an underrated gem.

I like minish cap, links awakening and albw above alttp for some reason. Idk something about the sword swipe angle seems off about alttp. It feels like it really only hits directly in front of link. Also the overworld still has some of the original legend of zelda cryptic problems.

Hmm where exactly? There is only one unethical puzzle in ALttP and that's in Turtle Rock.

@Klatubarada1979 there's those open holes in the ground in some dungeons, then in one you have to walk around the edges of it. I didn't wanna just jump in so I walked around for a while before I realized. Another instance were those invisible walkways. The game never tells you the thunder medallion let's you see them. Just what I can think of off the top of my head. Beat it a couple years ago.

Editing was kind of choppy, cutting yourself off in weird places, but still a good video. I’m as old as the Zelda franchise, but I never played the handhelds much. I’m a huge huge fan of LttP though. There’s a fan made game free to play called Dungeons of Infinity that’s becoming popular right now. I’ve been obsessed with it for the past week.

just DO NOT play PH or ST on an emulator for anything other than footage, and at that point just ask other people for their footage. They are great games, but playing on an emulator makes the games unplayable. You could also play on the Wii U, which makes it easy to capture the screen.

4 Swords Adventure is playable single player, just meh. As for the DS Games, good on DS, bad on Emulator. Otherwise great tier list!

Ah you’re the opposite of most when it comes to the oracle games. Most find Ages the better game since it has better puzzles and dungeons and fighting is second while Seasons is the opposite.

Those are still usually classified under "2d" Zelda games, even if they're rendered in 3d. Their kinda considered 2.5d, like games like Kirby Star Allies and Mario Wonder, just in a top-down view instead of a sidescroller view. Of course these games sometimes have vertical movement, but... shh.
