Having Kentaro Miura pass away this year was very sad, I'd love to have seen his reaction when playing Elden Ring, in a weird way it would be an almost more sincere version of the Berserk world than the handful of actual Berserk games (abominations all) that were made. It'd be wonderful if they could do a Berserk themed DLC Expansion or something in the future, or better yet, just have From Software get the Gaming Rights and have them make a proper Berserk game. They could even start in The Golden Age, Bazuso as your first boss battle would still be awesome. (And if they REALLY wanted to push boundaries, maybe even make Donovan & Gambino a first boss pair if you know what I mean... ... Maybe as a flashback though... Cause, you know, that's a pretty intense way to start out a game.)

@@ThatDudeDavid252 Yeah that’s never a bad thing to do. Still I believe It’s going to look basically the same. Maybe a bit polished in some areas. It’s art style and lighting effects really carried the atmosphere for me. It was somewhat beautiful despite its blurry look. Unfortunately the frame rate was worrying at times. There were definitely some led downs they could improve on. As you mentioned the enemy variety was a joke in the first game. Even though they were well designed, you got the feeling that they never really changed during the game and so it got repetitive pretty quickly. With the weapons it was pretty much the same. The world also lacked content for me and the side quests were mostly poor and unrewarding. Also proper dungeons were fairly missed and the main story didn’t deliver, especially the ending. Overall it was still a very good game, but they have so much room for improvements for its sequel. They surely will expand the world, the question is to which extend they will do so. I have my doubts if the switch is able to handle it..visiting basically the same world again for most parts of the game doesn’t really feel right.

I highly recommend trying out Dark Souls 3 while you wait for Elden RIng. That game's so awesome and while it may be more linear than 1 you still get that same sense of exploring that you get in the first. It's just that now each singular area has more stuff to find in it while the order in which you go through each one is more limited.
@Elevate388

On the topic of Dark Souls 2 and 3 being more linear than Dark Souls 1, that is true, but there's still a ton to explore in the other games as well and multiple paths and hidden areas/bosses. i'll just tack on: Dark souls 2 is deinitely a little lower on quality, because it got a "rebuild from the ground up" halfway through it's dev cycle, but I'd argue its DLC shines MORE than ds3's. it feels like a grand continuation of not the story, but the themes and background of ds2
@weaverquest
@weaverquest 2 жыл бұрын
All souls games are linear essentially. DS1 and especially Demon's Souls let you some freedom of choice in which areas you want to tackle first but levels themselves progress in linear fashion and everything converges into a single path muttiple times before finishing the game. The specialty of Souls game worlds and levels in my eyes are their complex, sometimes labyrinthian design that are interesting, challenging and rewarding to explore and get your head around. All Souls games have this quality. I am curious whether Elden Ring will be able to incorporate this kind of design into an actual open world game.
@pissant42
@pissant42 2 жыл бұрын
@@weaverquest I get what you're saying but you're a little off the mark there. DS1 has several areas like Dark Root Garden and Blighttown that can be accessed and progressed through in multiple different ways. Its true theres often a conventional way to progress but theres also several ways to go off the beaten path. The same simply can't be said about DS2 and 3
@weaverquest
@weaverquest 2 жыл бұрын
@@pissant42 Still very little opportunity to go off the beaten path even in DS1. In fact I can't really think of any other example except Dark Root Garden through the dragon valley and into Blightown shortcut/skip which was probably just a by product of the effort to connect levels with shortcuts (which was crucial since you can't warp in DS1 until the second half of the game unlike every other Souls game). So what I am basically saying is that all Fromsoft games up until now emphasized linear level design.

Sadly, his successors didn't fully understood that formula and have been merely trying to replicate it with varying levels of success since then.

The reason I have a lot of faith in from software for an open world game is their games always have massive enemy variety and a ton of bosses, so you know when you explore you're going to find all kinds of new and interesting enemies everywhere you go, on top of interesting environments as well. And since the games are challenging and finely balanced, finding rewards will be even more rewarding. Those are some of my biggest gripes with breath of the wild, you have a beautiful and interesting world to explore with really cool landscapes and different ways of traversing them and interacting with them, but you only ever find the same enemies, more shrines, and the game is easy enough that rewards don't feel as rewarding as they should.

But the traditional souls areas are spread around and you fight the main bosses in them

You really should play the other Soulsborne (and Sekiro, too) games. If you're short on time, I'd recommend skipping DSII. I agree with most fans, I think it is the worst, but it's still a solid game. DSIII is the most linear of the three, but I think it has the best bosses and combat is fine-tuned to perfection there. It's my personal favorite. I feel like Bloodborne might the one you'd like the most. The atmosphere and world are haunting, combat is more fast-paced and agressive, has some great bosses and its level design is more on the vein of the first DS, you know, that kinda-Metroidvania-but-not-really thing. Oh, and get the editions with the DLCs, they're totally worth it. They have some of the best bosses.

I'm hyped too: it combines the best parts of Fromsoftware's former games (combat form DS, sneaking from Sekiro arre two of the best things I've seen in videogame history) and avoids the tedious, repetitive aspects (the backtracking after dying and the stupid hubareas in DS 2 and 3 are two of the most aweful things I've ever seen in videogame history). At least in the Network Test. ;D Can't wait to explore small dungeons and explore - no fetchquests, nearly no backtracking, just killing, levelling and exploring.🤩 Of course Souls games have to be played offline. This avoids messages and other quite tedious aspects of the "multiplayer". Some people enjoy this, but I don't despite liking souls-like gameplay...

Playing Dark Souls Remastered on the Switch has opened my eyes to the potential of these types of games, but I unfortunately can’t justify getting a whole new console to play this game

It looks great! Glad you had a good time! But I have to beat Demon's Souls (original PS3 version, also the only Souls I own) before I even THINK of touching this. It's been mocking me from my backlog for far too long 😂

If you ever find yourself some time, I highly recommend checking out Dark Souls II and III before Elden Ring release. Maybe if you do, you could also make a video about what you liked and disliked with each of them. Would love more Dark Souls & Elden Ring videos!

Just beat dark souls recently. Going to go through bloodborne again and play the dlc for the first time before eldin ring comes out. This is easily my most anticipated game of next year even edging out the sequel to botw.

I can’t imagine how Geoff Keighley is feeling about the 2022 Game Awards with Elden Ring, God of War Ragnarok, Breath of the Wild 2, Horizon Forbidden West and Starfield all coming out next year, and those are just the more well known ones right now

Arlo covering Fromsoft? A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one. I guess I shouldn't be surprised though. Dark souls scratches the same itch that some older Zelda games like link to the past and OOT/majora used to growing up. Edit: I, too, hate multiplayer features in dark souls and always play offline.

I'd argue that Zelda was like the first open world game, like 3 decades before Breath of the Wild. Things just collectively became more complex from there on out.
