I’m going to assume the reason why super butoden 3 lacks a story mode is because the buu saga had yet to conclude at that point, with it coming out in september 1994 and the chapter with majin Buu’s defeat releasing in april 1995, and the final chapter of the buu saga itself releasing in may 1995. Given just how much of the story just wasn’t released yet, I think that might be why there wasn’t a story mode in butoden 3.

A month or so ago I bought Supersonic Warriors 2 for the DS and it is amazing. It's not deep at all. But it is fun as hell and the biggest (only) issue is there is no way to delete the save file. However you can corrupt it and it will refresh the whole game back to factory.

Interestingly, Butoden 2 was rereleased on the 3DS if you preordered Extreme Butoden... and Butoden 1 was rereleased on the Switch if you preordered FighterZ. Though sadly both games had their music tracks replaced due to Kenji Yamamoto being fired after getting caught plagiarizing many of his tracks he provided for the DBZ franchise, as the non-nostalgic replacement retro tracks ended up being unlockable music for FighterZ Also, it seems you missed out on Hyper Dimension for the Super Famicom, I felt that one was a fantastic contender for the best DBZ fighting game alongside Butoden 2

15:23 there is actually an english fan translated version of Super Butoden 2 along with an english version of DBZ Hyper Dimension, the 4th Dragon Ball fighter on the Snes. I assume you'll be covering Hyper Dimension next time though (along with the third DBZ arcade fighter), and I think you'll like it as it has a story mode similar to Super Butoden 2.

Excelent video. You really do a great job with those quick-reviews of each game. About Butoden 3 not having a story-mode, it's probably because in the manga, the Majin Buu arc started in 1994, the game's release year, and would still go on until the next year, so they didn't have much story to cover during the game's development. That's also most likely why the roster doesn't include characters and transformations that would appear only later in the arc, like Super Buu, Kid buu, SSJ3 Goku and the fusions Gotenks and Vegetto.

No, in super butoden 1, for some strange reason, you have to manually activate in the options menu the option to guard or dodge super attacks I don't know why Pd: to charge ki in the first super butoden you have to hold down when you are in the air but it's a better option to just guard, Super Butoden 2 improves a lot

super butoden 2 will always have a special place with me and will always be one of my favorite games. i played the french version back in the 90s and absolutely loved it. i've played other dbz fighting games like super butoden 3 and budokai tenkaichi on the ps2, but my other favorite game is budokai tenkaichi 3 on the wii.

There IS an English patch for Super Butoden 2, but it's crap. I remember playing it a lot years ago. It seems as if whoever made the patch just ran the Japanese through Google Translate, because there were spelling errors and typos everywhere. Still, you could understand what was going on if you can tolerate Engrish. I will forever remember it as at that one game where King Kai kept saying 'shit' over and over again because of that patch.

Gekito tenkaichi vagually seems like a blueprint of what would later become the arcade game "Dragon ball heroes", a arcade game only in japan, where you also scan cards you pre bought to have those characters appear in the game and fight, but instead of a fighter its turn-based.

Butouden 1-3, ultimate battle 22, and Fighterz are all under the butouden series. Fighterz was originally named some kinda butouden I forget. Not sure if hyper dimension is part of the butouden series.

One thing that you lost because the non existence of an english translation is that, in super butoden 2, there's character specific dialogue for EVERY character, or the most part. Also in the French version you can play with Goku and Broly for the start

I have memories of 2 DBZ games on Playstation that should be coming on the next video. One was called Dragon Ball Z Legend, it had a very weird combat system with a tug-o-war like one in this video, but when someone wins it they get to do a cutscene attack, which is the only way to actually deal damage. Plus the fights could be between 1 2 or 3 characters for each side, but the CPU characters would fight in the background with no apparent influence over the fight itself... Except for the fact they are 2 more lifebars to lower. The other was one where you have an enormous roster of DBZ characters, the sprites were cutouts from the show basically. I think it was in English, with japanese voices, but at the time I was 6 and both English and Japanese sounded like Chinese to me so ...

Don't forget about PC DOS and later Windows engine M.U.G.E.N and DBZ Fighting Games. Yes I know the sprites were ripped from various DBZ games. But this was only Fighting game to play DBZ on PC at that time.

Good to see a video on these older Dragon Ball Z games. Can't wait for the next one! Also, I certainly hope someone will eventually decide to translate the Super Butoden-titles into English. They deserve it... I wonder what your opinion will be on Ultimate Battle 22 and Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout for PlayStation. I had fun with both of them as a kid. I truly did. But six different Goku's in one game that already has a small roster was not a good idea. I guess Japanese fans thought it was, because they made the decision. 😅

Ranking every DBZ PS2 Game (imo) #1: Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3 Amazing game. Very fun to play with friends. Largest roster. Overall a fun and amazing game that you can sink tons of hours into not even playing the story mode. #2: Dragon Ball Z Budokai 3 Best Game in the Budokai Series. Part of what puts it so high is it's open ended story mode with multiple characters and different endings. Although a lot was improved in Infinite World a lot of the stuff from this game is also missing in that game too. #3: Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 2 Best Soundtrack and has a Better Story Mode than Tenkaichi 3 as well. Although the story can feel repetitive due to it's structure and limitations it's still something that you can sink tons of hours into. #4: Dragon Ball Z Infinite World A lot of improvements were made in this game but also a lot of things missing as well (such as World Tournament Mode and Beam Struggles). However, this game is very difficult... Very. Basically the Dark Souls of DBZ Games. If you're wishing to challenge yourself in a Dragon Ball Z Game then this game might be the perfect one for you. #5: Dragon Ball Z Budokai 2 I might be in the Minority here but I actually loved the Board Game Story Mode here. Sure it can be a bit repetitive having to kill the same guy over multiple times and sometimes they don't utilize it to it's fullest potential but what they did do with it is cool. Plus, this is the game that introduced fusion. Which you can do in the middle of the battle btw unlike in: #6: Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi I respect this game for being the first 3D Dragon Ball Z Fighter and pushing the bounds of what a DBZ Game can do. With that being said, due to it's sequels, it's horribly outdated. It's a decent game but you'd likely be better off buying one of it's sequels. It's the same situation for: #7: Dragon Ball Z Budokai Same thing I said for the first Budokai Tenkaichi Game applies here. It's a shame too that this game is so low because this was the game that actually introduced me to the Dragon Ball Z. But once again... It was outdone by every PS2 DBZ Game that came after it... Well... Almost every one... #8: Dragon Ball Z Sagas This game shouldn't exist. Enough said.

You know Imma play contrarian for a second I think Budokai should be above tenkaichi, and Also Sagas lol, Yes Sagas is terrible, but it has 2 things going for it, a pretty alright soundtrack, and Funny as hell to play Co-op, And little bonus trivia was one of the only games to not censor gohans missing arm, Legacy of goku 2 and Kakarot being the only other 2.
