I played the crap out of all 3 of these games as a kid. All 3 were the Japanese releases and I had to use my "Golden Finger" mod chip that plugged into the back of the console like a game shark. My copy of Dragon Ball Z Legends was a burned dvd-r. And it may have ended up being called "A Legend" in the European release but my copy had "Dragon Ball Z Legends" written on it. I remember having a spring inside the lid of the disc tray and having to initially put in a U.S. PS1 game to unlock the region lock... *sigh* nostalgia... great vid. Thanks. And I really did enjoy the heck out of all 3 o f these games in the 90s because that was all that existed, and I was thrilled that it existed. And yes, Legends was a lot of fun despite the goofy mechanics. 6 characters fighting at the same time lol

The second game was ELITE when it came out. Imagine you end up with a dbz, game when your 9, you have the translator disk, and you get to re-enact a 1v3 Gohan vs cell jrs. You could also knock opponents through the terrain - a feature ahead of its time. Was one hell of a game.

@@McCourt. That's what story modes were in games like this in the 90s, it still counts. Just like the story modes in the Butoden and Hyper Dimension games. Hell, even games like Mortal Kombat these days are still just that, cutscenes before and after battles, just much, much more elaborate. This was far more than most fighting games had for a story in 1994. Hell, most had nothing but a ending cutscene, and even that's just if you were lucky.
@McCourt.2 ай бұрын
@@Neo-Midgar Bro it's an arcade latter where a fighter says the same line to each other before and after every match... It's telling no story whatsoever. Dragon Ball GT final bout had the same thing just less cool looking. The Butoden games told the story of DBZ so you didn't even need to watch a single episode to understand what was going on and also had what-if stories. Games on the SNES and Genesis had flushed out stories either in text you can read on screen or in the manual. Even Mortal Kombat 1,2 and 3 had texts about characters back stories and reasons why the events are taking place.

The wild part about Final Bout is that GT didn’t even air in the US yet, and the internet use isn’t what it is today, so it probably shocked a lot of fans to see there’s a sequel

We played GT final bout in 1999 at PEAK DBZ toonami hype and were confused as hell when we popped the disc in and saw Frieza WITHOUT horns ! And Majin Buu, we were like who is this ??? And Pan, Trunks, Cell....we were lost. Also, the voices weren't the voices from the show. It was so bizarre to us, but it was the only American DB game we had at our disposal at the time so we played despite the sluggish, clunky gameplay.

Yeah, I got Final Bout and Legends when the Cell Saga was wrapping up, so you can imagine my confusion and wonder: "whoa, who's that fat pink guy, and why did Vegeta turn evil again...wait why is Goky a Kid again? A golden ape named 'Baby'?...SUPER SAIYAN 4?!?" It was a wild, wild time, and I was schooling all my friends on characters they wouldn't even see for 4+ years.
@FreddyKruegerRealEstate2 ай бұрын
Sorta, but not exactly. I was in highschool when the Final Bout game launched in the West. We knew about GT. If you were into Dragon Ball Z at that time, and not a small kid, you probably knew about GT and AF. At the time we thought GT and AF were both real, and it was thought that GT was a alternate universe parallel to Z (not far from the truth). While AF was the continuation of Z, being mysteriously worked on in Japan. People also knew that the series was a old show, and that you could read first hand accounts online of people who knew Japanese who watched the "Boo Arc"... It was fairly obvious, because even in 1998, there were Dragon Ball Z figures, posters and merch in magazines (especially EGM and NewType), online and some stores that featured future trunks, Super Saiyan 3 Goku, and kid Buu. And magazine were very popular. Even early internet had lots of early anime sites for things like Pokemon, Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, Gundam Wing, and some other Shonen like YuYu Hakashu and Slayer. And while most people didn't have internet, this was at age of people virally spreading rumors, movie plots, game codes (remember mew in the truck in Red & Blue Version?) and everything else word to mouth. And this got around. We knew who many of the characters in Final Bout were, but thanks to the localization - most the characters in the game where anyone's guess ot us. That was part of the fun of it because honestly the game was far from fun, even at the time. And even if you were one of those people lucky enough to have a computer, have free reign at the phone line, have a browser subscription AND be tech savvy: even if you looked at Japanese sites to find images from GT, there was unfortunately very little to gleem from it because localization barely existed. So Final Bout existed as a mystery for us, wrapped in a vague understanding that it wasn't canon, full of both familiar and unfamiliar characters - where we had no clue who was good or bad - until many years later.

I gotta admit, I really like Dragon Ball Z Legend, I also have the Saturn version which runs a lot smoother, and (in my opinion) looks a bit nicer since it uses more pixelart elements for super attacks over low poly 2D. It also has more detailed environments and a few destructable environmental details. The story mode certainly can drag, but it also offers unique events and cool optional scenes. I enjoy hopping into it every now and then just doing some VS CPU.

This is a great video! You're love of the Dragon Ball franchise is palpable, and I just subscribed to your channel. However, I do have to say that spelling "Buu" as "Boo" isn't exactly wrong. While the katakana for the name would be written in English as "Buu", his name, as well as the wizards he was created/released by, get there names from the famous phrase coined by Disney's Cinderella "Bibidi-Babidi-Boo". "Buu" is the closest approximation you can get to "Boo" using the Japanese alphabet, so while "Buu" may be the more correct spelling, "Boo" more accurately portrays the meaning intended by Akira Toriyama to an English speaking audience. Freeza's name however, is incorrect. Freeza’s name is a pun on all things relating to the cold. As both Freeza’s and Coola’s names end in a short “a” vowel (rather than the long â/aa which usually signifies “er” in kana spellings of English words), Freeza’s name is typically spelled with an “a” at the end (as opposed to “Freezer”). Logic would of course follow that his brother’s name should in turn be spelled in a similar fashion as “Coola” (rather than “Cooler”). FUNimation chooses to spell the names as “Cooler” and “Frieza”, removing the consistency between the names and their final vowels. The actual English word “freezer” would be written out in katakana as フリーザー / furîzâ, so it would stand to reason that we should spell the Dragon Ball character’s name as “Freeza” instead of “Freezer”. "Vegetto" in Final Bout is a preferable spelling to Funimation's use of "Vegito" once you learn that Kakarot in Japanese would actually be Kakarotto in English, as the fusions are supposed to have a fused name as well, and "Vegito" leans heavily into the "Vegeta" side. The "I" actually comes from the ""I" in Vegeta's Japanese name "Bejīta", if you were curious. Really, there is no accurate way to translate Vegetto's original name of "Bejitto" without explaining how Japanese names work, and how some things just can't be translated 100% accurately in English. It is for this reason that I have a preference for the Viz manga translation of "Vegerot", as though it is rather silly sounding, it accurately gets across the intention of the fused name going by a combination of Vegeta and Goku's Saiyan names. If you're curious about any other characters names, I suggest you look up MistareFusion here on KZbin. He has a series where he goes into depth on the Dragon Ball manga as well as anime where the names he uses are as accurate to the original Japanese intention as can be understood by a native English speaker. He also provides a brief explanation of why he chooses to pronounce the name in such a way as to allow for a better understanding. He also has a few videos specifically about character names, why they're written how they are, why they're translated how they are, as well as any puns or double meanings they're derived from. If you've taken the time to read all of this then I appreciate it, and nice work on a wonderful video!

Having read pretty much all of this as well (mostly just to see if there was anything major I hadn’t already learned about in my 20+ years of love for Dragon Ball) I can personally say that A.) I’m glad funimation changed the little aspect of Cooler’s name as it sounds waaaay better and exudes a… “cooler” attitude (pun very intended) as I’ve always seen him as the far more badass character of the two between him and frieza. I’m glad that he’s only been used sparingly. Annnd B.) I think I prefer ruminations naming conventions for pretty much everything overall. All the weird grammatical inconsistencies that would pop up if they didn’t change some stuff would drive me nuts! lol… or at the very least they’d sound far too goofy. I think Dragon Ball has always toed the line between badass and goofy perfectly and I’d hate for it to tilt too far one way and disrupt that perfect balance they’ve had for almost 4 decades

A couple things about Final Bout. It's very much the "Dragon Ball GT" game. The reason why SSJ4 Vegeta wasn't included was because he didn't exist yet (FB came on 8/21/97, SSJ4 Veggie premiered 9/17/97). Given it's release date, it's easy to assume development began sometime during the Baby arc, so that's probably why we didn't get Super 17 or any Shadow Dragons. For the voices, when they this game came out, FUNimation was still outsourcing their actors (from Ocean Studios for DBZ at the time) and didn't have any dubbing studios of their own. The show itself was on a break between the Saiyan and Namek arcs, so when it came time to bring this game to America, Bandai just used the European translation, and hired another dubbing studio to haphazardly dub the character intros. Pretty sure FUNimation had zero involment until the 2004 reissue, which they co-published with Atari. Last is Boo/Buu's spelling. The Boo arc hadn't come out in the US yet (we were barely at Namek), so that's we got "Vegetto" instead of "Vegito", "Boo" instead of Buu, but still got "Frieza" instead of "Freeza". They probably could've changed this in 2004, but probably had their hands full with Budokai 3 by then.

It's still pretty heavily centered around GT though, between the characters taken directly from or being based on GT taking up almost half of the roster (8 out of 17), adult Goku's design specifically being based on his appearance in the first GT episode, and Baby being the final boss Not sure why they didn't just title it as a GT game, but given GT was already proving itself to be a failure during this game's development, I assume they wanted a more broad appeal

As someone who grew up playing DB games from the famicom all the way to now, Dragon Ball Legends for the PSX (and the Saturn) are severely, severely underrated. The soundtrack, while nothing too special, isn't horrible by any means. It feels DB at its core. Also, while the specials might take too long at times, these big finishers do the fights justice. For example, during the Frieza fight, start it out by allowing Frieza to kill Vegeta. After that, let Goku hit Frieza with the spirit bomb, which means you activate your special attack twice. Swap him with Krillin, and allow him to die. Lo and behold, a very angry SSJ Goku is there, ready to rip Frieza a new one - and you have an amazing change in OST. The game rewards you for playing as closely to how the fights played out in the manga as possible, allowing you to unlock its true ending. It's unwieldy and a little tricky to get a handle on, sure, but there's a reason why it still received praise from critics. For myself, it's so much better than Ultimate Battle 22.

Dragon Ball GT Final Bout When this game came out in the US the Funi dub didn't even exist yet. The choice to not use the Ocean Group to get the few lines of vocals is still baffling, but when you're not expecting much profit, you cut corners where you can cut them. That being said, I actually liked the voices for the most part. Actually, now that I think about it, when this game came out, there was no official translation for Buu, Vegetto, Trunks, Cell, Pan, or Baby. I thought Vegetto's music was pretty dope. When doing a beam struggle you just have to mash triangle to win. You are also able to counter, block, or deflect when the computer attacks you. If this is still an annoying feature you can go into the options menu and turn of Demo mode and the game will behave like UB22 and the rest of the Botuden games. Meteor Mode was an odd choice of rock-paper-scissors to add to the game and it is also able to be turned off. As for the development time and roster oddity for it being named Dragon Ball GT Final Bout... well... it was only branded GT in North America. The original Japanese release is just Dragon Ball Final Bout. Given the timeframe, adding the GT branding is even more confusing because, well, as one of the small number of people in the US that even knew about Dragon Ball, what difference would the GT even make to people? I will be honest, this game is what made me dig deeper into Dragon Ball as a whole (at the time I was only aware of Z and had only been watching it for a year). Maybe that was the point. Not sure. Anyways, this game was only half-done 6 months out from its release date. They probably finalized their roster when they started developing the game, which was most likely around the time SS4 Goku and Golden Oozaru Baby were brand-spankin-new, which is why the roster is so GT light - Super 17 hadn't debuted yet, the Shadow Dragons weren't a thing yet, and neither was SS4 Vegeta. All that being said, this game was likely just slapped together for a cash grab. The fact that it even came out in America when it did was surprising. It was a truly bad, and at that time, to a pre-teen desperate to dive deeper into Dragon Ball, wonderful game and it was the ONLY official Dragon Ball game we would have in the US until Budokai came out.

The game was in French so I was like okay this game is probably only released in France for Europe. I live in Germany and this is no joke the game was released 3 years later after I had mine from that manga comic variant. A few friends of mine had Ultimate Battle 22 burned on a 💿 prior its original Europe release. They also had Final Bout and Dragon Ball Legends. Ultimate Battle 22 is 💯 better than the other two PS1 games. I had a lot of fun as a kid. Final Bout was really shocking I mean besides the opening intro the entire game was terrible. Around 2005 I came to play Dragon Ball Legends / Idainaru Dragon Ball Densetsu and man I was lucky I didn’t went to buy it unlike my friend who paid for a burned disc of it.

Gt. My speculation was it was developed during the first arc of gt and they dipped into Z to fill out the roster.

When I was a kid my friend had a modded ps1 and had a copy of DBZ the Legend (though until today I’d long forgotten it’s name) I recall enjoying it, thinking it was cool but found it hard to play. I feel like maybe it was multi player?

Play the saturn versions! (There's no gt... but the first 2!) And compare them... would live that review

DBZ The Legend came out in europe also and on the Saturn witch is the best version to play. Its one of the best DB games period and it was the first to actually recreat the fighting in the show. Sending an opponent into the rocks and fly after them to continue beating the crap outta them is never not fun. The sprite work is amazing! One of my fav DB games ever!

DBZ Legends was the best, an actual story mode 3 vs 3, most characters. Cons, worst graphics and Couldn't do super moves only when the cutscene activates. Ultimate Battle 22, decent amount of characters great soundtrack, epic intro , it's just the gameplay sucked it was too slow. Final Bout..Honestly the best thing about the game was the intro, one of the best, the soundtrack and SS4.. we didn't even know SS4 existed until playing Final Bout and it looked so wild and powerful, other than that it was the weakest of the three games, low characters roster, no story mode, terrible voices on some versions, slow gameplay, one thing i did like was the aura charge and the mini cutscenes for super attacks beam struggles but the rest of the gameplay was garbage, we all loved it at the time because it was when DBZ was at it's pinnacle in the show so we always fantasized about playing a Dragonball game..Then came Budokai 1 and we forgot all about the ps1 games the first Budokai blew us all away. Budokai 1 changed everything..without the first Budokai game there wouldn't be the Budokai series there wouldn't be a tenkaichi series and Raging Blast etc lets all thank Budokai 1 for opening up the doors.

I loved DBZ Legends and Final Bout. Sure by todays standards it's AWFUL, but back then, it was amazing. Loved the cinematics , music, characters and voice overs.

I had UB22 when it finally came out here in America. Was extremely disappointed by it. I think i had already played Budokai and I was expecting a story mode like it had but with Buu added to it (i was a young kid. I know better now)...I always wanted to play Legends and Final Bout but never got to. I was always extremely intrigued by the cover art to Legenfs because I had no idea who Kid Buu was but I thought he just looked so cool. GT was like a myth back then so I was pretty interested in it too. Never got to play those 2 though.

Final bout OST is fire, you neeed some q-tips. Many tracks are recycled but they are re-arranged to be much better than in the old Butoden games. I can't name a bad theme from this. The game does suck though. As for Idanaru DBZ Densetsu, I thought the super move cinematics in it look extremely good. Even current-gen DBZ games don't have as good "directing" for the iconic moves. Final Flash and that adult Gohan Kamehameha peaked in this gme and haven't caught up.

Man gotta disagree on the Final Bout cover. That illustration went hard as hell and still looks so badass. The later american version that came out in 2002/2003 was pure garbage.

Having player DBZ Legend and DB Final Bout, the criticisms here seem quite convoluted and perhaps tainted with recency bias. Games in the 90s were clunky by nature. There were some standouts which were very smooth and intuitive like Marvel v. Capcom and Tekken 3 but the controls for Final Bout were intuitive enough if you knew how to play other fighter games. The frustration from the mechanics appear rooted on the lack of knowledge of how they work more than anything else. I do not know how to read and speak Japanese but both Legend and Final Bout had their merits for their time. Legend was able to approximate the frenetic pace of epic DBZ battles on a relatively inferior hardware platform (although one considered state of the art by late 90s standards). It also allowed for epic matches with a friend. If you knew how to manage your team, you can gain the upperhand in a 3v3 fight whether against a friend or the CPU. The finishers allow for a pause of tension and to enable the the losing side a respite to rally and get back in the game. Final Bout had klunky mechanics but once mastered, one can have hours of fun playing against the CPU or a friend. There were so many means to fight. From beam clashes (it required button mashing to win) to timing button prompts for meteor clashes right. If you know what you’re doing you can end a meteor clash with an unblockable super which will feature a unique closing voiceover if the super ends up being the finishing move.
