FF6 is considered one of the best ever made and it definitely shows. They pushed 16 bit graphics to the limit. Many Final Fantasy Fans have this as their number 1 or 2 of all time. Just think of how massive a remake of this would be. It would be larger than FF7. But it would be so amazing.

The thing I love most about this game is something that I think a lot of critics of this one don't fully understand. The entire game is being told to you as the player as if you were watching an opera. This is why the music is so beautifully orchestrated and why all of the characters are over the top-flamboyant or stereotype personalities that go on adventures that aren't necessarily realistic because they aren't supposed to be. The good is good and the evil is evil. This is also why periodically the game screen goes black and is narrated when giving characters their bios or when a moogle or imp come out to explain something. The whole game is opera themed and even includes one in the story.
@LtCdrXander Жыл бұрын
What you say about the opera is genius and makes a lot of sense, but even with that aside, I've always enjoyed the silliness, humor, and eccentric personalities of the characters and the game as a whole. And the game's not afraid to get serious too, like when Celes tries to off herself after losing all hope, Cyan mailing the letters to the girl impersonating her dead boyfriend, Terra protecting the children... All of that stuff is very emotional, and I feel like the humor and less realistic parts are very well balanced with truly emotional and serious moments, especially in the World of Ruin part of the game. It's both fun and whimsical and intense and emotional, just like any good play or opera! Now that you've mentioned how the game is one big opera I can't stop thinking about it; that's so cool! There's a new reason why FF6 is my favorite game Also, I think a perfect example of blending the un-realistic with the realistic is Cyan's dream sequence. The settings and circumstances are weird, and the fact that the characters somehow enter Cyan's mind is totally bonkers. However, Cyan's emotions and his literal inner demons of guilt that the party defeats are great metaphors for realistic emotions and grief, and for that reason the dream has always been one of my favorite parts of the game. I feel like FF6 perfectly balances the fun with the feels. The first half of the game is more adventurous and typical fantasy fun, but the second half deals with the characters' individual struggles after failing to stop Kefka. I feel like it's already unique to have the heroes lose in a game, but then to show how they deal with that loss afterwards with such realistic displays of emotion is a real feat of game design, especially since there's so many characters... Even characters I don't really care for, such as Gau, Strago, and Relm, all get some sort of lore or character development that makes them feel meaningful, and it even makes me feel a little bad for not using them lol. Anyways your comment deserves much more attention because the whole game being an opera is just mind blowingly awesome! Sorry for writing such a long comment, but it's been a while since I thought about FF6, and all the amazing memories just came flooding back!
@dellapj7 ай бұрын
Precisely! It’s also why so many of the names are Italian-sounding and the characters themselves are based around Commedia d’ell Arte archetypes. “What if we took the jobs from FFV and turned them into characters?”, and from there a concept was born. The Rogue, the Lovers, the Warrior, the Innocent, the Cad. And in typical FF fashion, you start it off as a comedy, a caper (the villain is even a Pagliacci-like evil clown!), but then you throw the biggest stakes at them (the world ends!) and see how they’re all real people underneath the tropes.

A few underrated facts: - Part of the reason the epilogue says "Character as [Canon Name]" is because of how you can name the characters whatever you want during gameplay. - In the original versions ONLY, the "Tower of the Gods" wasn't even named during the final battle -- that section of the UI was intentionally left empty. So when you reached Kefka himself atop it all and the name "Kefka" appeared onscreen, you KNEW _it's go time._ - The BGM for the final battle is actually a single track with several internal looping segments (one for each phase of battle). In the original versions ONLY, the BGM didn't switch to the next segment immediately with each phase, but instead just quietly removed the loop marker so the composition could flow to the next movement at its natural point. There's also a challenge run called "CES" (Celes, Edgar, Setzer) where you intentionally _don't_ locate your other party members again, and instead just challenge Kefka's Tower with the absolute minimum possible party size.
@TwistedSisler2 жыл бұрын
I'll add that this entire game is presented to the player as an opera (narrator, monologues, spotlighted character bios, over the top/flamboyant characters, unrealistic and ridiculous events, the musical score).

Did you see Shadow's story? If you sleep at any inn you have a 50/50 chance to trigger a dream (8 times) that tells Shadows backstory. Some people even think his story is linked to Kefka's (not cannon), but people either love or love to hate that theory. Either way the dreams are worth seeing as it reveals who he is, was and it links him together with another of your own characters as well (cannon).

Both 6 and 7 have similar good things and similar flaws (biggest flaw for both is probably the last third of both games being more or less just flying around the map grinding and killing optional bosses and the story sort of takes a back seat), but both have amazing musical scores and characters. I think 6's uniqueness as being told to the player as an opera and just being a fun/wild adventure, and the fact that I hated 7's minigames sort of put 6 over 7 for me personally, but both games are amazing.

I love the character introduction scenes where the screen goes black and a few lines of exposition about each character are displayed, playing it now and it's a really cool effect signifying the main/important/controllable characters.

Glad you loved it. As I mentioned FF6 is very beloved title and was really revolutionary when it came out back in the day, but when it came to FF7 they wanted to go really big. I'd say the best version to play it is either on pc with mods that fix issues or emulate it. The port suffers from the same problem KH1 had where they lost the source files for the game and all they had was a version made for PC by outside studio full of problems. Only unlike KH1 they couldn't rework it so as a result we have a really buggy port, with og incorrect translation that was done by 1 guy in either a week or month. Story of creating FF7 is a interesting one because at some point every game they were making was gonna be FF7. It originally started it's development on snes and we actually have one screenshot from that version of the game that has a blond character standing next to a inn in a high fantasy village, but at some point in devlopment of FF7 had to be stopped and they started to work on Chrono Trigger instead which also at some point was FF7 and I highly recommend checking it out. After they were done with Chrono Triger they restarted the development for FF7, but this time they knew it was gonna be 3D so they made a small demo with charcters of FF6 in 3D space fighting a golem. You can check it out if you want it's called FF6/FF7 on n64. And as I mentioned it was gonna be on N64, but that presented a problem since they wanted to do much more with 7 that they couldn't do on Nintend. After CEO of Nintendo at the time told them they are not gonna use CDs for N64, Square ended their relationship with Nintendo for a good while and went with playstation instead. With new tech and money from Sony they could go all out, but they still didn't know what the game is gonna be about. This is where things get really interesting. Skaguchi's idea was a game set in 80s new york following detective Joe investigating a terrorist group. This later got reused for Parasite eve, another classic. Kitase's plan eventually turned into FF8 and Toriyama was already planning FF13 back then, and even Xenogears( same creator as Xenoblade) was gonna be FF7 at some point. Things changed when Sakgauchi just came in and decided that Nomura is gonna be working on FF and left, because at some point they were deciding if he was gonna be designer for Xenogears instead, but Sakaguchi liked Nomura. Nomura not only came up with designes for the characters, he also came up with stories about his characters. They liked his ideas so they gave his ideas to Nojima (the writer of all the main line ff games going forward including 7remake and KH1 and KH2, aside from stuff done by CBD3). and Nojima combined it with ideas from Sakaguchi's pitch and started to craft the story of FF7 that we know. Having said that FF7 just like every other FF was a group effort. Everyone involved was important and did their jobs. One of the biggest props to Uematsu for the music because trying to make the music this time around was really tough for him so make sure to appreciate it well. Now while FF7 was the game that changed everything some old fans didn't like it because it was a way bigger shift then 6 and for while Cloud was called anime edgelord, but as time passed people who did like it were able to voice their opinion and it gained this universaly beloved status, now being one of the best games ever made.

@@ItsLazBoi Fun fact about Chrono Trigger's ties to the Final Fantasy series. After moving to the PlayStation and releasing FF7, they started porting the previous games in the series to the system in bundles of two games each. There was Final Fantasy Origins that included FF1 and FF2; Final Fantasy Anthology that included FF6 and FF5, and Final Fantasy Chronicles included FF4 and Chrono Trigger. For whatever reasons, FF3 would never be seen on the system... Or when the games got ported to the Game Boy Advance later on. In fact (someone may have already mentioned this on your FF3 video), Final Fantasy III didn't leave Japan until the 3D remake on the 3DS, where the generic onion knight characters were updated to distinguishable separate people (to the point where you explore the first cave as the solo main protagonist, there's fellow orphan boy and girl that join the party only after going to the starting town, and the 4th party member is a knight of the castle that missed getting cursed if memory serves). The Pixel Remaster was literally the first time the 2D version of FF3 was officially available outside of Japan, only the 3D version of the game getting ported up to that point. Anyway, all of that was to say: you should include Chrono Trigger in your quest to play through the whole Final Fantasy series, even if by barely related technicality.
@dearthofdoohickeys47032 жыл бұрын
Wow I had no idea the pixel remastered overhauled the opera scene like that. That was beautiful. Edit: 39:34 in the original Japanese, after asking Relm’s age, Edgar says “Yeah, that’d definitely be a crime……I better just forget about it”. It’s not much better, but at least he knows it’s abhorrent behaviour, I guess? 🤷 There’s really no good way to translate a whopper like that 💀 Double edit: If you’re playing through FF14 side content rn then I won’t spoil too much, but it has some really nice homages to FF6. I’m looking forward to your other playthroughs!

something that stitches a lot of FF titles together is that undead can be killed with white magic Cure, Raise, and Phoenix Down. A single use of the item will kill the Phantom Train. Yes, but what type of remake is the question. In one way I think it would be an amazing triple A game, and yes, unfortunately it would have to be action for the modern generation. There is no way they're going to spend that amount of money and risk turn base style. To me, it easily has the best story of all the final fantasies (have not played FF14), so bringing it to the newer Generations would be wonderful. On the other hand, a remake like seven got might really irk some hardcore 6 fans. An octopath traveler HD 2D with voice acting might be the better approach. They could keep turn base and still look really bad ass. But that would also turn a lot of the newer generation away because for some reason turn-based just isn't as popular. It's a shame. But either way, I would be buying and loving every minute of it.

It doesn't matter that you can kick Kefka's ass later: he already won, he destroyed the world.

I find it funny that you keep saying if they ever remake this while you’re playing a remake of the original original game the SNES version of this game did not have any of the special effects that were shown in here. It didn’t have any voice it didn’t have any of that, all just 16 bit cartridge. This version that you’re playing has act songs in it and shows 3-D visuals that couldn’t be done on the SNES. I’m not even sure where you got this version because it looks really clean. I’m just wondering if they made any edits to the storybecause there’s a lot of stuff that you did in here that I just don’t remember when I played it the original time

This game is in dire need of a remake. Not a remix remake but just update the graphics to 3D HD and change NOTHING

He was paid by SE to promote the pixel remasters, it'd be false advertising to change the font.

So far, nothing beats the SNES original. Yes, there have been some nice sfx updates (and I think some glitches have been fixed?) but the character sprites here are ugly af and most of all, Woolsey's translation is WAY better. His dialogue feels like people actually talking, not like pre-written lines from a game. For example, when General Leo asks the Soldier "You're from Maranda, right?", Leo's next line is "And your family lives there? Fall in battle and I have to deliver the bad news ... What shall I say to them? You have a life to go back to someday. Don't throw it all away for nothing. Emperor Gestahl wouldn't want that." There's so much more subtext here and that tells you much more about his character than the way he's spelling it all out in this version. And that happens throughout the entire game. Same goes for Cyan when he finds his family. In the SNES version he says "D... Dear me... I... impossible! Idiotic!!! We can't forgive this! The empire must pay!" It's so much more emphatic. The lines in this version just sound like they were written for a roleplay game, which at least takes me more out of it. And don't even get me started on the opera!
