Once, I watched a documentary about the behind-the-scenes of the production of this game, and I'll never forget a moment in the documentary where one of the game's writers stops, emotionally moved, and shares that after its release, he received numerous letters from fans, revealing that they had refrained from taking their own lives because of the game's storyline. The resilience displayed by the characters throughout their difficulties inspired them not to give up and to persevere. In the end, there are many reasons why this game has had a profound impact on my life, but without a shadow of a doubt, FFIX is a masterpiece.

I think people were embarrassed to use Quina back then. Especially given the backdrop of the other characters, Quina came off as a joke character (much like Steiner’s earlier development). But if you spent the time to collect his/her blue magic, absolute unit. And character arc also comes around in a way that makes accepting who they are easily. It’s interesting to see how a game this old captured the idea of trans/asexual/non-binary.

They had the same nature but vastly different nurture and therefore came to vastly different conclusions about the nature of life and living and dying.

Obviously, Aerith's Theme is just SO iconic, but it's always been Melodies of Life that has always brought me to tears. It honestly means so much to me and this is my absolute favorite installment in the entire series. For an art style people turned their noses at, I think this game specifically tackles the MOST adult themes. How all the characters deal with death/grief and the nihilism of it all, it's just SO underrated. I loved that every single character supported each other in their journey, being there for Zidane at his lowest moment and telling him that he isn't a burden (Garnet specifically telling him that they watch over him as much as he watches out for them); Vivi's journey with learning as much as he could in his short life; Garnet grieving the loss of not one, but two mothers and everyone giving her space to come to her own. Just all of it was handled so beautifully and in a way that was impactful for both children AND adults. It's such a masterpiece and it's a shame people won't play it because "it looks like a kid game" or the world is a TRUE fantasy game and very unlike FF7/8. Glad you enjoyed it. I live for the blind reactions of my favorite games. Looking forward to watching you play FFX eventually. (:

Man that just unlocks memories I had. It was also my first FF completed. I remember I didn't have a memory card when I got FF9. I was like 8 or 9, and it was probably one of the first games I got for my new slim PS1, along with Rayman and a demo disc that had Spiderman 1 on it. Without a memory card I would no-lie, play through the beginning of disc 1 over and over. We only got to play console games during summer/winter break, so every day, I would try getting as far as I could so I could see more. I remember finishing Disc 1 in one sitting before mom told me to get off it, and it felt like a massive triumph. Then the time came when my brother finally got a memory card. And I probably spent 5 years plus, playing through the game over and over. The game was worth several summers of fun. First time beating it I had no idea what I was doing. Each consecutive playthrough I discovered more and more. One playthough I'd focus on finding alternate scenes. On the next I'd focus on blue magic completion or frogs. I only discovered the depth of chocobo treasure hunting in like the 4th playthrough and it was like a whole new game. I probably did 95% of the chocobo quests before finally losing my mind on the Ocean chocograph and figuring out that I could probably use the internet to help me. I remember printing out a map of all the chocographs. We didn't have reliable internet when I started playing, and even if we did it wouldn't have occurred to me to look up anything. But I wouldn't have changed that experience for the world.

FFIX is probably my favourite FF game. The theme of identity throughout this game is linked so well between all of the characters! The parallel between Vivi and Kuja that gets built up over the course of the game that you don't get to understand fully until right near the end is just soooo good. One used as a tool of destruction and the other given the chance to figure out who he wanted to be. Also FFIX has to have my favourite aesthetic of any FF game so far. It's such a stylised choice but it works so well for the scope of the characters and the world they chose to build. I stumbled across your channel and I'm so glad I did. I know you said you're having a break from FF games (fair, there are a lot of them and they aren't exactly short lol) but when you DO start FFX, I can't wait to join you for your first playthrough of it!

Fuck I ended up crying too at the end thought I was prepared this time but no. Also yeah the self referential parts of this one are really fitting because they work really well with the themes of the game. "Even after we're gone our memory will live on within others" kind of stuff. Everything comes from the thing that was before them, this game can only exist because other final fantasy preceded it.

1:01:05 the design of the Invincible appears to be based on Amano's airship concept art from FFIV. Of all the earlier FFs that IX draws from, it definitely takes the most from IV. There are so many direct analogues in these plot and character dynamics: Zidane = Cecil Kuja = Golbez Garland = Zemus Terrans = Lunarians Brahne = King Baron Garnet/Eiko & Maidan Sari are similar to Rydia & Mist, though not quite as similar as the above dynamics. With that being said, I wish IX had you fight each of IV's archfiends first to break the seals to Terra (instead of having you fight a single fiend from I). Then in Memoria, you can fight the OG fiends as usual since you're digging deeper into the Crystal's memory.

I'm late, just wanted to say the farewell letter at the end, those are Vivis final words. He died, or "stopped", that's also why you only see Vivis "sons" or the ones that were modeled after him. The developers confirmed it and in the japanese version its more clear as Vivi has a special pattern there, as in how he speaks, and in the final letter it has the same pattern. So yeah, Vivi is gone :(

It always amuses me that final fantasy IX is often called the childish one when it's arguably the most depressing existential nightmare among the golden age final fantasies. It has like 8 freaking genocides. 1: Burmecia 2: Cleyra 3: Lindblum 4: Alexandria 5: Madain Sari 6: The lost summoner tribe of mount guluk 7: Terra 8: The black mages. I'm glad you like the game so much, especially after being disappointed with the other FFVII stuff. I do consider this the best game ever made, I see it as a perfect fantasy, the only one I know I think along with Lord of the rings. This game does so many things so well that you don't even notice on a first playthrough. I must have played it over 20 times by now, and still everytime I see something new that I never noticed before, to the point where it became sort of an in joke between me and my best friend where, when I first got him to play it, we were waiting for that moment to come, and it did as always. Last time I realized that the little location with the bridge has several different backgrounds with mist in the valley or not, depending on the state of the game. The detail of this game is amazing, the world so alive, from Morrison dying to the birds in Lindblum having a mini arc throughout the 4 discs. But the best thing of course are the themes and characters, and how you understand them in your very heart, even when you don't always know exactly how to word why it works so well. I could go on for ages about why every part of this game is so perfect. This is THE final fantasy

FF9 is kind of the ultimate 'final fantasy'. It may not be yours or even most fan's favorite - I prefer 6, many prefer 7, or even 8 or 10 or 5, but I think most people who /don't/ have this as their #1 game in the franchise will still admit that this is the game that most embodies the franchise. From the music to the style to the return to goofiness yet the heavy story and the plot twists and the 'but wait, there's more' and the characters and systems, FF9 is what happens when instead of, 'let's find something new' a developer decides to make a tribute to their own games. It's definitely not the most unique game in the franchise. But it is /the/ game to point at as the most 'final fantasy' in the franchise. Which is why I am very, very hyped for the remake rumors.

FFIX has always been my favorite no matter how many other FFs I have played. I know some people discounted it for it’s more cartoonish designs when compared to the ‘gritty realism’ of 7 and 8, but I found that while the world was bright and whimsical, this game dealt with some incredibly heavy and mature themes. Vivi’s journey struggling to understand his existence and mortality, Garnet’s persisting love for her mother even in spite of everything she’d done, every scene in the Black Mage Village that emotionally destroyed me- these moments stuck with me more than any other FF game before or since. Thanks for a heart-wrenching reminder of why I need to replay this game as soon as possible, it has been too long. Now I’m going to go and try not to cry about Vivi Orunitia. Again.

My explanation for the Alexandria explosion was Alexander gave all of them protection as he explodes since he is the GUARDIAN summon and his summoners are with him. Not to mention, if you remember, Eiko jumped down from the Airship, meaning the ship was directly above them. That's my explanation tho. the most stressful part of the game for me was the countdown scenes, especially when you controlled Cid. haha Vivi *stopping was inevitable. On the Alexandria blast, You have to remember that every second of FMV cost Square astronomical amounts of money;Remember the tech of the time. It's not a complete defence, they could have shown in game that the party got into the Castles underground and survived that way and then cut to the blast. That said there is another element to consider, the other thing to remember is disc space, FF games really pushed the limits back then, with FF7 being 3, FF8 and 9 being 4. I think I recall this being disc 3 when the blast happened and so there was still a big chunk of game, plus a few more FMVs to go. Point is the telling of the story may have been done purely out of technical limitations.

I don't see the problem with them getting out of alexandria, they were there on an airship. My memory with this game is of borrowing from a friend the first disc, playing and getting to the end just to learn it had other discs, but when I asked for the others he said that he bought the game 2nd hand and it came with only the first disc. So my little brother and I played the first part countless parts but nothing more. Years later I played the game by myself, now to fully, but still was before I learned English, so I had the knowledge of what happens visually, like I knew Vivi was a doll and that Zidane was from Terra, but the details still where missing for me. Jump 15 years and youtube recommend to me a video of someone playing FFIX, so I watch. And now being fluent on the language I understand what happened on the game, and slowly realized what the end mean. So when it got to it I cried more in that moment than all the other times I played it by myself. Then I decided to write this comment to thank you for this experience. I lost my little brother still young and for the long time I drawn myself into all kind of media that deal with mortality and how to face it, and to find out that the game that I never got to see the end with him was all about that, is in a way poetic. Thank you again for it, be sure that I'll carry this memory with me from now on.

What made this game even more special to me is that, this is the last game that Hironobu Sakaguchi developed, and he believes this is the closest thing of an ideal Final Fantasy looks like. After IX, he was involved in a Final Fantasy movie (which is a disaster) and got soo many thing going on behind the scenes, the game he's last involved was in FFX and FFXII. (And he approves FFXI to be an MMORPG). The rest is history
@ItsLazBoi Жыл бұрын
Yeah I think it's quite noticeable that the games Sakaguchi is a dev on have a particular aura to them, once someone told me Sakaguchi wasn't heavily involved with VIII it made so much sense to me as to why it just didn't resonate. This game really is a love letter from Sakaguchi to a franchise he created, it's beautiful in that way and I would agree it's certainly the ideal Final Fantasy, it's the epitome of Sakaguchi's vision

Sakaguchi did not "resign" himself into an executive producer. After he decreed the delay of FFX, which put Square in the red for the first time in the company's history(prior to the losses of TSW mind you), he was removed from as FF brand manager and the company BOD. The losses from TSW was just the crowning on the cake. Sakaguchi was pressured out of SE due to his opposition to FF sequel-making and the Enix buy-out. The writing had been on the wall for years. Sakaguchi even registered the trademark for Mistwalker several months prior to the theatrical release of TSW.

I think the "let's get out of here" before alexandria exploding might be because ff9 is written a lot like a theater play. They were obviously going for something like that and theater is very important to the game. And in plays you often see things like that where a character just says something and exit scene and you have to just assume it happened. It usually doesn't cause problems in the game but yeah now that you point it out it's really weird for that instance. Especially since they didn't even get a proper animation of them just running off screen. But yeah it feels a lot more like "weird editing" and a lot less like "we saw them fucking die" like what you have in the missile base in ff8 (but with that precedent in the previous game I absolutely get why it'd feel like a massive contrivance, I honestly never thought about it that deeply before)

That said, FFIX was my first FF experience and remains my favorite to this day. By far the best storytelling and relatable themes of any FF thus far. Enjoy FFX, that’s a close 2nd for me.

I really wish I played this game for the first time when I was a bit older. I played it first when I was around 12 I think, and a lot of the themes went far above my head. I still have fond memories of the game, but I think I would have liked it way better if I could play it for the first time as an adult. Glad you loved it so much, excited for your FF X playthrough some time in the distant future ^^

My friends and I have determined that IX had the best story*telling*, but that VII still has the best story overall. IX's pacing is extremely good, it basically has no hiccups in pacing. VII has the edge in cast for me, though. Vivi is the best character in all of Final Fantasy, but Amarant is also possibly the worst 😅 Zidane and Garnet work very well for the story they're in, but I don't think about them the way I do the heavy hitters in VII. Cloud's arc hits me more than Zidane's. Barret is a better Steiner, Red is fantastic, etc. But IX is still phenomenal, make no mistake. I can't honestly argue with anyone whose favorite is any among VI, VII, IX or X.

1:33:00 - but here's why I think that's ok for Final fantasy specifically - they were at a precipice where they threw a hail mary, with no means of continuing if it did not work out. that's how the series started. so for them to then celebrate their past by referencing it and expanding upon it's staples, it's not selfreferencial in some vain or greedy way - it's from a place of fondness and love. That's also 100% why no one actually complains about FF14 having themes, names, locations, characters or just concepts almost straight taken from the previous parts of the series - because they put a spin on it AND they do it in a way that celebrates it instead of showing it off. You can even see in FF7Remake how they take the best systems of the series - from FF9 they took weapons having skills that over time you unlock for the character but need to use the weapon to access until you do that. and others I can't think of right now

@@LazerzZ have you considered playing Dissidia after X? It covers FF1 to 10 so maybe you could play that in between as sort of a breather?

Very neat! I recently finished playing this game for the first time also. I think we started at the same exact time hahaha. My favorite was 5 but, I think it's 9 now. That is until I play, 4 completely, finish 6 and play 7-8 for real instead of watching someone else and listening to the OST at work :D

I never saw it as the city getting nuked i saw it as alexander being dematerialized, like breaking the magic of the summon and killing the power that brings it into existance thus the explosion is something that is 99% alexander only, its being unmade, Hakai'd if you will. And in the process some vibrations happen and destroy some stuff
