My mother hated video games, especially violent ones. She was also a huge Bond, and espionage/spy book junkie. MG Solid was the first game she ever sat and watched me play. I’ll never forget she would slap me if I tried to skip any dialogue, and I had to play the entire game only killing when I absolutely had to. Such a great memory, RIP mom.

That's a nice memory. Rough losing someone close like that. My Dad was a big movie buff & enjoyed new tech & whatnot, got us new consoles as they came out - well up to the ps2. He heard about MGS & got it for my brother & I & would watch us play - he'd joke around that he used to be Snake (he even had a nice mid length near mullet too back then); & real nice stache, he'd would've looked kinda like Old Snake actually lol after 9/11, my parents had separated, & he joined the military - when he'd visit he'd watch me play 3 & tell me about the stuff that's similar to things he'd use but obviously the stuff in mgs3 was outdated by then. He didn't make it back alive & well from Afghanistan.

I absolutely LOVE the small ridiculous details in these games that you wouldn't ever think about doing or seen during your first few playthroughs. Such as: -Certain codec calls relating to something you've equipped such as the tuxedo, Raiden mask, crocodile cap, the dream sequence etc. -If you use TNT to blow up enemy supply/food storages, they'll be hungry or only use handguns. -If you equip the SAA and spin it during the Ocelot fight, he'll stop and challenge you to a revolver twirling contest. -While in the caves, if you don't find the torch, after awhile Snake's eyes will adjust to the dark and things will be easier to see. -If Snake eats a certain food he thinks is gross enough times, he'll begin to like it. -If you equip the Raiden mask during the Volgin fight, he'll let his guard down thinking you're Raikov. -When Snake loses his eye and you go in first person the game actually conpensates that and his vision is altered -Wasps will attack you more aggressively if you wear black or red, but will leave you alone if you wear white. -Vultures in the mountains will feed on dead bodies. -If you use the fake death pill during The Boss fight, she'll know you're faking it and do a kick that wakes you up. -The final duel with Ocelot has 4 different endings. There are countless more but this game is insane for its time.

The beautiful thing about that fight is that the game never tells you that you can counter her CQC moves, but somehow, through context clues and really great pacing of the animations, you can guess that hitting the melee button at the right time works. @@lilwyvern4Snake besting her at CQC is slowly revealed through the game and it's clever foreshadowing that Snake (and you) will eventually beat her on it. At first he gets curb stomped but as the game progresses he slowly begins to adapt and counter the Boss' moves. His testament to how his CQC had evolved was shown in Groznyj Grad, when he immediately disarms the Boss when she was holding a combat knife.

I only played the 3DS version of the game as a kid, but it's not only one of the best games on the 3DS (not surprising considering it's already one of the best games in general), it's also one of the most well made ports - not only does the jungle setting work incredibly well with the 3D stereoscopy, it also does some unique things like putting the map and all the UI (aside from the healthbar iirc) onto the lower touch screen to free up visibility, as well as managing your inventory and using sonar from the touchscreen, it also had features exclusive to the 3DS (I think) like letting you use the inbuilt cam to create custom camos with dynamic camo indexes... Sure, I look forward to the ‘your mom’ comments sprinkled in your videos as much as the next guy - it’s like finding cash in a jacket you haven’t worn in awhile - and I certainly get great ideas for heckling friends, but your videos are so much more than that. What really stands out to me is that you REALLY KNOW YOUR SHIT. I’m a coupla years older than you, but I grew up with the same taste in games. Some were absolutely transformative moments from my youth, much like seeing Empire Strikes Back in theaters (my first movie as a 3 yr old). What truly stands out to me is how you’re able to show us these gaming moments into the same thoughts I had in my youth, but didn’t have the wherewithal to verbalize what impact they had on me. Bravo, Gman, you Aussie treasure of a guy. ALL of your videos are worth watching - your recommendations are solid, your criticisms valid, etc, etc. THANK YOU for your service to us, the gamers of the world who otherwise can’t express how meaningful some of these gaming moments have been in our lives. Even only in terms of all the cool secondary stuff you can do, changing the menu colors, goofing with the cutscene cameras (where you can find secrets), the unique codec calls, realistically loading an extra round in the chamber, the ways you can beat most of the bosses in different ways, making snake throw up by spinning him around in the pause menu… games these days rarely have all this weird stuff packed in there. But on top of all that, pretty much every aspect of this game is perfect in my opinion. Still looks great and yeah, that soundtrack is incredible. The last few runs I did were total stealth, no alerts so it’s been a while since I’ve heard that music. But even thinking about it gets me pumped. Whether the remake sucks or not, there’s always the original masterpiece to go back too. Ain’t nothing gonna touch that.

0:07 The satisfaction that's comes from taking down an enemy with CQC in MGS3/4 still sticks with me to this day. I still remember how good that final thud felt the first few times I did it in MGS3. Such a small detail added so much to that mechanic. The developers definitely got it right.

Kept me waiting huh? Speaking of how Snake's vision changes after losing his eye, his eyes also adjust to darkness in real time. Also, all the animals being food is well known, but you can also capture them alive with non lethal rounds and use them. If you catch a snake and throw it at a guard, it'll actually bite them and if it was venomous it would kill them. You can also wreck The Fear by hitting him with non lethal attacks and when his stamina is low he will look for food to eat, by chucking out bad or poisonous food he will eat it first and get sick then lose all his meter for an easy win. The Boss fight is special because if you never draw a gun, you can do the entire boss fight with a CQC, hand to hand fight.

I first played MGS3 at my friend's request over summer break during college. He lent me the original PS2 version, and the game was incredible. It got me hooked on Metal Gear right before MGS5 came out, which I played several hundred hours during the next semester. My roommate had a PS3, so I decided to get the HD collection and played MGS3 again. I couldn't believe I played the original after getting the new camera. I played through it again and then a 3rd time, going for the no kill run. It was still normal difficulty, but I felt so accomplished at the end when I took on The Boss without a gun. It's been several years now, but I feel the urge to play my all-time favorite video game again.

I'd always say MGS3 is a Perfect Game, and that Kojima was the first person to make me really care and mourn about a character, the deliery at the end of what really happened with The Boss is something that really marked me, I played MGS 3D and I was literally in the middle of the night under my blanket seeing the final cutscene and I remember crying myself to sleep that night becuase The Boss ultimate sacrifice is that impactful, so much everytime I see that scene I can help but salute just as Snake does.

Definitely the best MGS title in the series. A simple yet entertaining and engaging prequel narrative, excellent stealth gameplay and design, high production values, and the right amount of Kojima’s style. MGS 3 proves that Kojima can be an amazing director when he isn’t trying to make things overly complex and ridiculous. I’d still say Death Stranding is his best work just for his audacity to make a game solely around the idea of traversal, but MGS 3 is definitely up there.

I was tripping on a few grams of mushrooms with my friend before he went to the Iraq war (which I protested against at the time but that's another story) definitely one of the craziest games you could ever play tripping balls! I think it still holds up even today. I only ever play it on extreme, and destroying provisions warehouses to starve guards, then throwing poisonous or rotten food at them is so satisfying. Did you know, common food like bats and rats give very little stamina. But if you eat a lot of them, snake will start to like them, like an acquired taste, eventually this common food will give excellent stamina!
