Still had a strong mental that let him scale up, also Gragas didn't have other place to be, mid was always under turret and bot was winning 2v2, he can't contest ekko, the only 2 options for him was gank Top or farm, and even ganking Aatrox accomplished nothing cuz he got more platings than Tham (and also got Ekko feed of countergank), the Help he asked sounded more like "can you countergank" than spam pinging like a cry baby

The way i see it, his damage in his kit, it's not spread evenly at all. His w and r aren't reliable. So he's balanced in a sense around his passive, q and e, which is just an insane amount of power in a single e -> q -> auto.

his jump is an auto lock ability, so it locks onto the champion, and if they flash / use a travel at the right moment before ekko lands he travels to their new location. It's a royal pain and one of his most broken aspects.
