Even tho you're correct about our hands not being as used to move in square as in a circle, our eyes read the screen as a square (or a rectangle) so in translates the movement needed as a straight line when it should be a curve, that's why it feels like you're fighting the area

Very fun video! As you found out, Simple Stretch is one of the most extreme/hardest mappings to use. Honestly I'm quite impressed by how well you played with it. It would've been much less torturous if you'd used one of the recommended mappings, though just from your brief try on FG-Squircular that's probably obvious. I use Power2 Blend set to 0.75 (this creates a mix between FG-Squircular and one of it's derivatives: Cornerific Tapered2). FG-Squircular, most of the mappings based off it (except for the non-axials), and Elliptical grid are the ones that are recommended to be used. The ones like Simple Stretch are mostly just included to satisfy curiosity. I also had to add them myself for testing to see if they were good or not and since the work was already done I thought it would be best to keep the option in-case someone actually wanted to try it. Btw there's a good chance your editing software is using something similar to FG-Squircular or Elliptical Grid. And about your tin foil hat theory, I think you're thinking too hard about how Simple Stretch works. Imagine you took a circle made of something stretchy and pulled at each corner, then the spots right next to the corner but a little less this time, and the next spots even less and so on till you meet an axis on each side. That's sort of how Simple Stretch works, it doesn't do anything fancy like the recommended mappings. Also something you might not expect from playing with it is that Simple Stretch based mappings are (mathematically) the least distorted but that leads them to being distorted in ways that are hard to predict with your hand.

Muscle memory is a crazy thing. Once you've got it, it's hard to rewrite it. I remember when the crash bandicoot remakes came out, everyone was going on and on about how the physics in the game felt off. You'd end up dying by falling off of ledges that you felt like you definitely should've landed on. Except, then we began to realize this was only a problem for people that played the original games. People that never touched the originals never had any issue with the remakes. And it all comes down to muscle memory. The hitboxes for Crash were different. In the original, his hitbox was rectangular. In the remakes, it was ovular. Combine that with the fact that in the original trilogy, all 3 games had different physics engines, and in the remakes, they were all using the physics from Crash 3, and it really threw off the muscle memory of people that played a lot of the original games. Even if it had been over a decade since they played them. So honestly, it's not super surprising that learning a new area fucked up your muscle memory of how you played for years. Working so hard to make this new weird area work made you accustomed to the round area, and now a rectangle just feels huge and weird. Makes sense.

you know, that last part of you struggling to use your main tablet area actually reminded me of a video that's something along the lines of "backwards brain bicycle", which consisted of someone trying to learn how to use his bike with the handle working backwards, and after he got used to it and tried to come back to a normal bicycle, it was basically foreign to him. pinguefy also made a video that went through that as well except with a different keyboard layout instead (even mentioned that same video). pretty sure it's still possible you can get the muscle memory you had before, just that it most likely will take some time to get it back anyways that's about it, just wanted to mention :p

I've heard of an experiment where someone wore a special headset that basically turned the world upside down entirely. And after several days of wearing it suddenly everything was right-side up again and when they took it off, it was all upside down (eventually it switched back again luckily). But our brains are pretty amazing at adapting to stuff...

I think the understanding of the math and what's going on with the transformation of the area could really help a lot because it would be a lot easier to just figure out what to do or what happen

I think the uh, circle to square map is like, (r,theta) -> (r * sec(f(theta)),theta) where f(theta) is like, a triangle wave, where between -pi/4 and pi/4 it is the identity, between pi/4 and 3pi/4 it is (pi/2)-theta (so, decreasing from pi/4 back down to (-pi/4), and then repeating that. So uh, I guess f(theta)=(pi/4) - abs((pi/4)-(theta % (pi/2))) Uh, to do this in x,y coordinates instead of r,theta, well, if theta is between (-pi/4) and (pi/4) then f(theta) is theta, and so just looking at (r,theta) maps to (r sec(theta), theta), and sec(theta)=(1/cos(theta))=(1/(x/r))=r/x, and so r sec(theta) = (r^2/x), and then, the x,y coordinates should be, ( (x/r) (r^2/x) , (y/r) (r^2/x)) = (r, r (y/x) ) I.e. (sqrt(x^2 + y^2), sqrt(x^2 + y^2) (y/x) ) in the top region, uh, switch the roles of x and y, for the left region, use (-sqrt(x^2 + y^2), sqrt(x^2 + y^2) (y/x) ) instead. I think? This is just my guess as to what mapping it does. I haven’t checked any of this, just typed this on my phone keyboard without checking any resources while writing this.

I was trying to make the area smaller so I can be faster when I do high bpm jumps but that failed miserably. I think only warping the display would solve the “corners too far” problem without requiring you to change your muscle memory. The only difference you’ll see is what is effectively a different beatmap (since straight lines become curved), but that’s not a problem at all. Edit: I’m an idiot. It has to be _both_ the display and the tablet area that needs to be warped, but in such a precise way that your muscle memory doesn’t have to change. That sounds hard.

I'm not a math genius or anything, but I think the reason a straight vertical line movement is not straight on circle area is because with every point in that line you will be a different distance from the edge. I would assume that's how it maps. With a square or rectangle area you would always be the same distance from the edge if you go downwards, while with a circle that's why it zig zags. It usually should be the same in the exact middle, but anything up or down from there should be zigzagging with this logic.
