I'll keep it short but here's my own journey: 14 years of classical piano performance with a teacher 2-3 years of music theory (RCM intermediate harmony) 6-7 years of self taught arranging and improvisation The most important is really to commit and practice routinely I also recommend a piano teacher since they can get you started on the right path and fix and underlying problems you might not notice self learning
