they are iconic, yet pretty simple to play. so if you worked at a guitar store in the late 80's you would have people coming in EVERYDAY butchering the intro to those songs repeatedly. if someone is actually new to playing guitar, the salesman will just think it's funny and not do anything. However, if the person clearly plays guitar well and comes in and plays one of those songs the salesman will tell them to stop. mostly as a joke and a reference to the movie "Wayne's World" if it is Stairway to Heaven. other "banned riffs" include Thunderstruck by AC/DC and Sweet Child o' Mine by Guns N' Roses
