Cities Skylines is without a doubt one of the very best city builders of all time. And from my recollection, the game was absolutely fantastic at launch and has only improved over the last nearly 10 years, with the countless updates and DLC that have expanded the game has received. And that got me thinking - was the game as good as launch as I recall it being or am I looking back with rose-tinted glasses?
In this video, we'll play the launch day version of Cities Skylines (1.0.5) in 2024 and see what is missing, as well as see how it compares to the launch of Cities Skylines 2. Enjoy!

Yup, I only played a very lightly modded CS1 (casual player here) and even at launch I was shocked how much had been improved over CS1. CS2 very much felt pushed out too early, but we cannot say the devs didn't learn and listen to the fanbase and what was improved or used a lot in mods. I always saw the devs role to make a game with a solid foundation they and modders could work on, and honestly from what we have seen with CS2 there is a huge amount of flexability to what can be done with the game. It will take time but I really think it will turn into the best sim city style game, passing even CS1 with all DLC.

@@silenthunder52 Problem is twofold for CS2 I think. On one side the complaints were valid, about it being a buggy mess with poor performance. CO dropped the ball there bigtime, possibly because they just got too ambitious. On the other hand there are a lot of players who make a direct comparison between 9 years of CS 1, and a freshly released CS2, and that's just an unfair comparison. As this video shows, CS2 is miles and miles beyond what CS1 was on release.

Your difficulty with the interchanges are the precise reason why, to this day, some of the most subscribed custom assets of *all time* are Timboh's custom interchanges.These have been long, long outdated in the era of IMT, Node Controller and other mods, and much more up to date ones exist now. But they were the first custom assets and they came when the player base was at its peak, so many still have the top subscription numbers.And now you see why: People were *desperate* for custom interchanges back when tools were practically nonexistent *outside the asset editor* to build them.

The thing i remember from the first two years of Cities Skylines was that there was a bug that meant outside connection trains wouldn't despawn, which means that train exporting/importing was entirely broken. I remember how big of a deal tunnels were. Same with the ability to reverse roads with the upgrading tool. Yeah, uh, early Cities Skylines players tolerated a lot of shit because there really wasn't much better. Also, the Cities Skylines KZbin community changed oh so much in that time; a lot of the faces that came over from SC2013 eventually just kinda disappeared. I think either ConflictNerd or Biffa are like the earliest CS ones still remaining and regularly uploading Cities Skylines content. A bit rambly, but i think it's kinda interesting just to think about where Cities Skylines was in 2014-2015 compared to now, as a community. Edit 1 from watching this; Yeah iirc they did edit the terrain textures a few years into the game's life. I want to say it was around Parklife but I'm not sure. Also, topographic views I believe was post After Dark, in the free update that added Quays to the game. Cities Skylines free patches were kinda wild like that. I recall using the wind speed map as a rough idea of what the terrain was like inland before that patch came around. Edit 2 for the assets. Welcome back white collar residential assets Cities in Motion 2. Honestly they were just as placeless there. Also there's a lot of assets that are just cuts and merges of the same assets, especially in the residential side. Also, no corner lots yet iirc, not that that didn't really come into play unless you were doing offices or high density commercial.

I tried to get a consistent bui;ding theme by using the marquee tool (like how I would do in CS2) and it always randomizes the building aesthetic for each marquee. @@Greybell 1x1 grid buildings never really made sense. Consider that a normal street is 2 grid units wide, and includes 2 footpaths, 2 parking lanes, and 2 driving lanes, meaning the width is at least 10m wide, you end up with a 1x1 building that is 5m x 5m, which is tiny and looks really silly

It really puts into perspective how much the modding scene contributed to the success of the first game. Without them this franchise would not have lasted for as long as it did and based on that reputation CO and PDX were able to sell the idea of a sequel with over-hyped fraudulent marketing and promises. As it stands version 2 is still missing components that were in the launch version of CS:1 and it still relies on the exact same mods to fix the quality of life features that were never fixed by CO's own dev team.

Nope, as far as I know from interviews from the CEO of CO they have always had a team of around 30 employees and she intentionally keeps them as a "small team" to better keep them under her control. With the success of the first game they have no excuse for not expanding which would have helped build the game that they advertised for version 2. The CEO intentionally gimps her team which resulted in the gimped launch of CS:2. Her only contribution to version 1 was the ripoff twitter mascot that she rebranded as "Chirper". If you listen to her interviews she admits that she knows nothing about the gaming industry and treats it like a "job" and when she was given the position of CEO she came into it not having to do anything to set up the studio as she states that she was given a ton of money in the form of some kind of subsidy and there were already employees established with specific roles which she had nothing to do with.

The original launch of CS1 benefited GREATLY from how upset people were with the last SimCity to come out under EA at the time, that game was a huge flop, CS1 had what people were more or less looking for instead, and it took off from there. In hindsight, the enthusiasm and community around CS1 took several years to build at least, finally peaking when the game was all but complete, with just one or two DLCs to go, and after the mod community had a chance to make additions that basically became non-optional, like TMPE.

People who make the argument of “CS1 launch is worse than CS2 launch” intentionally make a misleading argument. Nobody today is going to play the launch version of CS1 because they can’t. The natural comparison is not launch CS1. CS1 was essentially a live service game. The game evolved. They had years of experience to build a worthy successor, that built off of what came before, instead they regressed it, and now you have people trying to justify their poor decision making by making irrelevant and irrational arguments.

Here's the thing, all of these things coming from patches and DLC are fine for the first game in the series. Why I was okay with it then and am not okay with it now is quite simple. I don't see why in a sequel to a game, I have to again wait for patches and DLC content to give me BACK functionality I had in the previous title. Imagine if Nintendo had released Mario Brothers and then in Mario Brothers 3 made 2 player mode a patch that had to be added back into the game? Imagine if Halo had added in dual wielding weapons in Halo 2 only to make it a DLC in Halo 3? Imagine if you could change your custom in the first Spiderman title but in the sequel that needed to be added back into the game in a patch?! It's not a fair comparison to compare CS1 at launch to CS2 at launch. At all. Paradox themselves decided to make it a sequel, a DIRECT SEQUEL. They themselves chose to make this comparison. don't cry that we did and what we see isn't positive, even today. (though I concede the recent patches are the right direction, they still have a long ways to go) A fairer comparison would be to compare the launch state of CS2 to be BASE GAME ONLY of CS1 at the same time. Although I do have to concede, I could have SWORN fences were a day 1 feature in CS1. I am actually shocked!

I came to CS1 in 2017, a couple years after release. I never knew the struggle, or lack of features from the 1st release. This has really opened my eyes to how much more CS2 has opposed to CS1 on release. We're on the right track with CS2, and I can't wait for the future of the game.

Thank you for that, CS2 is definitely not perfect, but I remember having more fun with it at launch than I had with CS1 at launch. I actually played CS1 for a couple months after launch and stoped, I only came back to it last year and had so much more fun because of the mods and upgrades. To this day I've never bought a CS1 DLC or pack because of the mods haha

i think a lot of the difference in perception comes from the legacy that CS1 created and the fact that we expected this to be a bigger project that was better funded and staffed after the success of the first game. its one thing for an unproven ip to launch in a rough state as shown in the video, its another for a now well established brand with 415 dollars worth of DLC in one game to launch another broken game
@thephantomchannel5368
@thephantomchannel5368 17 күн бұрын
Completely agree, I can half forgive the egregious amount of DLC based on version 1 being a work in progress. There is no excuse for version 2 releasing the way it did especially when they have more money and experience from the 8 years of keeping CS:1 relevant which can mostly be attributed to the work of the modders fixing the game for them. They should have hired a dev team that could actually deliver what was promised and on time but the CEO intentionally gimps her team so that she can control them easier which is something that she admits in more than one interview that she has given over the years since the launch of CS:1. When asked about if she has any concerns for the future she jokes that the biggest consideration she makes each morning is whether to drive her new Jaguar to work or to ride her pony. She has also has stated that her fantasy game to develop would be a horse grooming simulator for mobile devices. This is the person in charge of the Cities Skylines franchise which is probably the reason why version 2 had such an abysmal launch and why Paradox had to step in and take over for public relations even after they granted her a two year extension from when the sequel was originally supposed to launch in 2021.

I assume it was because I called out the CEO of CO for being woefully inept at being the leader of a gaming studio. Nowhere did I state that the reason for her poor leadership was due to her being female. I don't think there's anything wrong with comparing C:S2 to the fully-featured version of C:S. A sequel in this genre is meant to be a significant improvement. The devs themselves have grown and improved as well, and this changes what's expected of them.

This exactly. We should get giant leap ahead based on what was learned over the previous decade. We should be able to start ahead so the final goal is a significant growth. Unfortunately, CS2 seems to have set its goal to be eventually as good, as or mildly improved on CS1. That is a massive disappointment

While I understand not every single feature from cs1 being baked into 2 at launch, they needed to have significantly more than they did. Even without the dlc, the main game updates were there

CS1 was bare bones, but it was significantly cheaper than CS2 at the time of release. There were also no expectations because CS1 came out of the blue and no one expected it to be a successful successor to the SimCity series. The main thing I remember when I played CS1 on release day is that it allowed you to do things that SimCity 2013 didn't allow you to do, and that's why everyone praised it so much back then.

One thing I find super funny is when SimCity 2013 released people HATED that the power and sewage was auto under the roads, and praised Skylines for having you place them, and now with Skylines 2 people praise it for... having the power and sewage auto under the roads. I did enjoy SimCity 2013 for it's coop gameplay and especially the cyberpunk DLC. We've never really seen another DLC change a whole city so dramatically before and I think we need more stuff like that, and less of the Skylines 1 DLC... to a degree. But honestly love these videos, really puts into perspective how much games change, as well as our opinions.

Phil, I know you're upset about road control tools, but compared to Simcity 4 or Cities X/XL, having curve controls like this, at all, was an absolute game changer. Yes, CSII gives you precision controls but just having the power to make non-grid and also non-spaghetti roads, and in a tile larger than a shoebox, was huuuge in 2015. Including precision tools and snapping from day zero is actually a huge upgrade in CSII that almost everyone takes for granted!

Still not an excuse for the debacle of the CS:II launch, and it should never be... oh look, CS:1 was rough at launch so it is ok for CS:2 being rough as well and miss a lot of basic features. Nope... really not. The gaming industry set different standards for nowadays, and customers have different expectations as well. And releasing a game so flawed that it needs a year to even be enjoyable should be an absolute no-go for any developer studio.

I am SO GLAD you made this video! It came up in my recommended right after I read a comment under a video on a different channel that proclaimed even with economy 2.0 CS2 would never be as good as CS1. It left me very confused as I think with the recent big updates (Mod Support, Economy 2.0, and Detailers Patch) CS2 is already a better game than base Vanilla CS1. Certainly better than the at launch version you showed, but I'd even say it surpasses the current base game only CS1. I jumped into CS2 for the first time in months the past two days, and I'm very pleased with the progress. Once they clean up the last few major bugs (many of which have already been modded out, but of course we need official fixes), finish the planned economy tweaks with any necessary rebalancing, and launch custom asset support I think it will be in an awesome place for a base game.
