Here’s my opinion: Growth is okay, it needs MAJOR improvements. Matt (the lead dev) has even said the quests rn are boring. I think we need better quests, like hunting things, have the dinosaurs naturally grow but quests give the major growth buff, and have the growth times shorten. That’s my take. Honestly, I’m more annoyed by the new skin system. I don’t mind some skins being more expensive than others, but I think they went way overboard with the points you need to collect from quests. I don’t really want to complete 50 quests just so I can unlock a 5,000 point skin, and then do it all again to unlock another one.

Abilities are there to mostly shake up playstyles. Diets will make water and food faster or slower, but affect what you can eat. Hide also mostly switches up your speed/defense. Abilities also allow you to unlock and swap out different attacks of your choice. For example, you can either choose Concavenator claw swipe, or the paddle ability, which rids of your clawswipe but lets you swim super speedy. Abilities aren’t too complicated, especially since there aren’t too many yet, but that’s all I got.

Info here, not that I could be sharing this, but, in the PTB, they are already working with adjusting the amount of growth you get, faster and collection and more engaging quests. Also, private servers will be able to customize growth to be time based

One of my main drawing points for POT was that I could just enter as an adult and have the adult dino experience at any time I wanted, have fun, then go to sleep or do something else. Collection quests like acorns and lychees all spawn in specific biomes which are painted differently on the map. Acorns are found in beech forests, lychees and amanitas are found in redwood forests, tigernuts are found in grasslands, so on and so forth. The more you play, the easier it is to tell apart the different biomes, but basically: brown areas have acorns, green areas have tigernuts and button mushrooms, the sandy areas with green and red spots are redwoods, and I think the blank areas on the map are pine forests which can have milk caps. There's also the vulnona map for pot which is incredibly helpful for finding resources, including food

ngl i will say, this is cool conceptually but not mechanically. what i feel like they should do is have you consistently grow and when you complete a quest it doubles your growth time for like a minute or something, so if you constantly do quests you can potentially halve your growth time and shit. i think that would be cool, it shouldnt have to be fully based on quests, like it seems to be [feel free to correct me if im wrong on anything]

You can let your thirst and hunger go really low so you get a survival quest to bring them back up and get free growth and marks. It's a double edged sword though because if you do it and then can't find food soon you'll die, but with water you can do it no problem because water is literally everywhere on the map.

That's why I always stay around Tyrants Gorge. Every once in a while there are lots of predators (and for some reason the herbivores there are super aggressive!) to kill you, but I've memorized where a corpse and salt rock spawn around there and there are tons of easy to do quests so you can grow quickly. And the water there is like always fresh. And since there's a den, if you need to get away from a predator or aggressive herbivore you can run there. And there's some herbi food relatively close to the corpse. I don't know how many can eat that type of food, but it's there. And quite often there are really nice sarcos there. Multiple times I've done the quest to replenish the water there as a Megalania. You have to swim a ton to do that quest, and there are usually at least three sarcos there, but every time I do that quest they leave me alone and simply help with the quest. If they wanted they could very easily kill me! The only time I've died there to a sarco was when I was a baby sarco. After that I gave up on trying to grow up a sarco and I stick with my adult megalania lol. I get targeted by herbivores a lot since a lot of other megas are aggressive (I'm not since I know where a corpse is so I never worry about hunger) but at least I don't have to grow up for a couple days of playing.

I agree with growth times needing to be more casual to entice players. I work 45hs a week and don't want to spend 8hs of my spare time growing an Allo. Instead of run round the map quests, why not make them things like 'find water' 'find food' 'first hunt (AI)' and a general movement one. You know, things that actually grow animals in real life. Also what's up with nighttime, do dino game devs just not want us to see at night?

A lot of people forget that PoT is meant to be more of an mmo with survival elements! I don’t think growing to adult is meant to happen in a single day, it’s more of something to hop on and work towards like a leveling system. To me it makes sense for the growth to take so long since the punishment for dying is hardly as intense as other dino games. Once you have a full grown dino you pretty much have it forever so it’s a fair trade off to me. I definitely agree that quests need to be a lot more interesting and dino specific.

One other problem however is that dying sets you back about 1-2 hours, and a lot of dinos will kill for no reason. I literally got on and left with one and a half less bars than when I started, this makes playing really tedious

Oh well, for everyone, let's remember, 2 days since the growth was released. Also, POT is more an MMORPG, the "growth" is to be seen like "leveling" on a MMO, where is not just "Get big and then game starts". A lot of people here have been much more lenient and patient with the development hell that is The Isle. Not saying the growth is perfect, it's NOT! Quest give too little growth, the timer makes you anxious and puts a blockade on your growth, you can't simply skip quests, semi-aqua are not made to be questing in land, BUT, devs are already testing to make it faster, less grindy and rewarding. I'm not saying we shouldn't voice our complaints, BUT, again, 2 days since growth is out and, the game is not dino survival, is an MMORPG dino surival, enphasis on MMORPG. Also, community and private srrvers will be able to choose between having time based, quest based or no growth at all. Outside of that, great video, only you to make me laugh with the critiscism about growth!

A couple of other people seem to have suggested this, but a pretty solid way of speeding up growth a bit is by strategically starving/dehydrating yourself using salt rocks so you can instantly proc the quests for finding food/water. Personally I choose to do so only with dehydration since you can eat salt rocks to drain your water far more quickly. Also nets you some fat marks if you really needed them.

Allo looking so good here! And it has full lips! An idea I had for combating AFK growing, or AFK anything, is to put a stink cloud of sorts around your dino if you sit in one spot for too long that other dinos could pick up on when sniffing, similar to what Evrima does when there's combat in an area.

The biggest kicker is that for all dinosaurs, the growth rate is the same. A damn Campto or deino gets the same amount of growth buff as a bloody spino or stego does. Making pretty much all the smaller creatures completely obsolete

Always amazing to see soneone talk about PoT's issues, this game is a clusterfuck of awful balance decisions and mind boggling gameplay decisions. Stego being made out of Paper Mache, smalls being useless, the Ankyosaur I forget being garbage, and Solo play is IMPOSSIBLE, also marks being stupid Its like holy hell, both in The Isle and Beasts of Bermuda you can get by as a solo player, I've gone 2v1 and once 3v1 as Teno and won, in BoB I've ran away, in PoT you can't run, nor fight groups! Ohhh fuck, marks too, who thought it was a good idea to make it so you lose a quarter of your marks if you die to players??? In a game where you can't run nor fight as most dinos? Oh also, things like quests being boring and giving little in the way ofmarks are big issues too. I dont even need to talk about growth, either, as everyone is complaining about it.

Right now there is a mechanic of Passive growth in PoT (growth over time) but right now there's some bugs with it and it will be fixed in the servers and server owners will have the option to replace quest growth with passive growth if questing isn't your thing.

For me, growth in pot isn’t bad, but its BORING its all just walking around, collection delivering and going some places, even Matt (a dev) said that he thinks the quests are also boring and wants to add better quests, I think its should be both time based AND quest based, but time based is slower and quest based is faster, so when you just walk around you could just grow still naturally but, you do quest based growth and you grow faster. Its fairer and so much better in my opinion.

There is an auto-grow like The Isle, but its really slow. The quests just speed it up and basically make player stay active. Sitting down makes you grow even slower, btw. Growing with others in your group will make you grow faster because of shared group quests, and some of the best quests are near lakes, which have lots of things to collect (which, bear with me, help your grow way faster than running from place to place on the map. You'll grow 10x faster.)

And then die cause you need food to survive but whilst chasing my food it bumps into allosaurs which then chase me only for there to be a cliff in wich alio go splat then I spend another hour growing 0, 0000000001% only to accidentally delete my alio cause of a lag spike… other than that I’ve had a descent day. Growth pushing people away? The only reason i don't touch this game is due to how growth and quests work. I would love a new dinosaur game to add to my list, i play a ton of The Isle and Beasts of Bermuda, have yet to touch this game due to quests.

About the giga design thing; I used to rag on Jurassic park/world a lot about their Dino designs and how inaccurate they are (specifically in the original JP with the velos, which were actually designed based on deinonychus) and I still poke fun about the designs, but I also get its fiction anyways. JP/JW isn’t trying to be a documentary, and besides, they say it many times from the start that the dinos in JP/JW are genetically modified to some degree, so it wouldn’t be surprising if some of them turned out looking not-so-accurate.

18:15 I like the design of the Giga in Jurassic World 3 too ! The problem is that you have all those "scientifically accurate" dinosaurs and animals through out the entire prologue and you suddenly see that Indominus crocodile rex looking ass monster coming stray from Dr. Wu wet dream kicking everyone butts. But if that Giga had not been put in a realistic setting, I wouldn't have gave a crap about how it looks, also it's the big bad dino of the movie ! Of course it need to look scary ! You're not going to put some normal looking dino as the bad guy, you need to be able to know it is the bad guy as soon as you saw it. By the way, good video ! Managing to make something boring entertaining is pretty impressive !

@@johnlime1469 They reflect what people knew of dinosaurs in the 90's. This is why I think that trying to make scientifically accurate dinosaurs in the prologue is kind of dumb. They should have stick with the 90's style of dinosaurs instead of inventing excuses for why the dinosaurs in the movies doesn't look like the one in real life. At least they tried...

@@vinex9385 Mmmm not exactly. I don't think paleontologists would mistaken the velociraptors' size like that. Brachiosaurus' teeth were spoon-shaped, which I'm sure they knew back then. Tyrannosaurus were widely known to be scavengers, I think?, so it doesn't necessarily reflect the overall consensus of paleontologists back in the 90s.

@@johnlime1469 I mean your right, dinosaurs in Jurassic Park certainly were different from what the paleontologists thought they looks like. But they still are a huge improvement from what the public thought they looks like (just need to look at toys from the 80's to understand that). Also the Velociraptor are base on what they thought Deinonychus looked like at the time, they just change the name because ''Deinonychus'' wasn't as scary and as easy to remember as "Velociraptor". (Isn't the T. rex being a scavenger thing a theory from the end of the 2000's start of the 2010's ?)

The map design really doesn't help the situation either because you'd be walking towards your quest location fairly certain that you'll make it in time only for 5 consecutive cliffs to just say "nope" and you have to go around.

Growth does take longer but if you die you don’t start over which is nice you just loose some marks and you loose some growth but not all your growth and once your past a stage of growth you can’t loose it, also you loose more dying to another player then from hungry or falling off a cliff

I agree with people needing to be more creative with dinos designs, even if u want to make it the most accurate as possible, you still can stylize it with things morden birds have, not talking about basic feathers, they can do some feathers that only exist for mating and showing off, have more skin on the neck like turkeys, etc. Those details are really nice and have something else rather than different colors(which is still nice).

The different acorns and nuts spawn in different forests. Redwood forest has lychees oak trees have acorns etc

The prologue was supposed to be like a recreation of what was going on 66 million years ago. But then again, even if giga was designed to be more paleo-accurate, the fact that giga and t-rex are fighting, next to other dinosaurs from different continents is already weird. But also, given that this is Jurassic Park, idk why people are surprised that you're going to see some cursed stuff there.

I only check Twitter for drawing references from other artists and I don't even have an account so idk what the hell is going on with paleo-twitter. When the Dominion Giga's render was leaked(or revealed idk), I remember absolutely hating it. But now, I don't think it's that bad. I certainly like it way more now that I saw it moving on screen because god damn that first render looked awful. But if they had toned down the spikes on its back just a little bit, I'd personally like it a lot more. It looking so crocodilian doesn't bother me in the slightiest.

I really like PoT. Abilities, nice map, cool dinosaurs, good performance and actual updates! But i dont know what to say about the growth system. Took me 3 hours constantly collecting shit to finish juvi stage for metri... Quest for skins, homecaves and abilities are cool but for growing? Meh, especially that there isnt much variation. Collect something or go to somewhere...

Just updated and changed mission times from 10 minutes to 30 minutes so thank God for this fix it was much needed and I love this growth thing it makes a nice level of diversity so not everyone starts out all op and full grown you gotta work for that adult life. And this is where the fun comes from is pretending to do your best to grow up and survive
