I believe they explain somewhere in this episode or the next that it had to do with the connection between earth and abydos only barley working. Because space moves apart a lot of the “addresses” wouldn’t work. The earth abydos one worked but only barely, and that’s why they felt cold and disoriented. Afterwards they used some hand waving mumboy jumbo to fix those coordinates so they wouldn’t have to worry about either one.
@killbot86

Don’t forget in the original Stargate movie, Abydos was actually located in another galaxy but then this series changed it so that the entire gate network existed within only the Milky Way galaxy and that you needed a ZPM to dial a gate outside the Milky Way…..

@@connorgolden4 The cartouche on Abydos allowed for the SGC to calculate for Stella Drift that the DHDs automatically did. Since the SGC ddin't have a DHD they had to programme the computer at the SGC to do this calculations. It's why they explored a different gate every episode and had teams as the computer was calculating new addresses and the compensation for Stellar Drift during the whole time, until the Upload of new Gate Addresses during Jack's Ancient Library download.

@@shadenox8164 some would, but this dialogue is also a clever stab at the paranoid type of extreme "woke" that wants to see sexism behind every comment. A couple of (perfectly justifiable) jokes aside, their issue is more due to not wanting to babysit a scientist in a potentially dangerous combat situation- which would be justified if she wasn't also a soldier. They have Daniel to open the gate on the other side when they return anyway, and he's the only nerd they have learned not to underestimate. Where the scene made today, they'd possibly have Jack actually be sexist just to make a point. That's why people complain about "woke" dialogue- it's shoe horned in to make a point. You can't say that here, because it's better written scripts than the majority of crap these days.

KZbin comments at their best... O'Neill doesn't care she's a woman, he's not that kind of guy. Kowalski is. It's his comments that are the reason Carter felt the need to defend herself. Jack's issue is, partly like he says, with the fact she's a scientist more than a soldier. But his biggest problem is with how she ended up there. He has a problem with authority, and here comes Sam, and he now has to work with her cause the Pentagon said so, completely undermining his authority, and he's just supposed to take it. Nah, he don't fly like that (pun not intended)

It's "the right amount of feminism" because after this scene she goes on to prove herself with brains and combat prowess without being done in a silly way (she doesn't knife fight or kick a Jaffa halfway across a room), while also being a good solider who respects her superiors, their decisions, and the chain of command. She also shows good leadership when she's in charge, the right amount of toughness, in charge attitude, and respect and care for those under your command. @@BattlestarPegasus "She isn't demanding to be entitled to a seat at the table, she earns it, regardless of the specific placement of her organs :" ...and as such, it is not feminism at all. Feminism was NEVER about equality. Not even in the early days of it. In the beginning they wanted to abolish the negative aspects of discrimination without touching the positive side. My opinion: either play the woman role with all the limitations and privileges, or demand equality, but in that case take it as a whole. In THIS scene Carter wants to be treated as equal... period. No exceptions, no special rules, no cherry-picking. As a result, SHE EARNED all the respect from them. ZERO FEMINISM during the action.

@Scottish In a modern military of people driving tanks and controlling drones you want to focus the requirements to how fast someone can carry a backpack? And no, to interrupt the safe space jerk off, feminism was pretty obviously rooted in equality, especially in this context where women were kept out and had to fight for equality. That's why they fought to be allowed to enlist in the first place, to be allowed to be considered capable of serving as well. I'm sure there's plenty here ready to talk about extreme militants they've heard about online, while ignoring that one of the other comments here is an excellent show of why said women needed to fight extra hard to be acknowledged, but as far as the above clip is concerned, very feminist, just as Rosie riveter and suffragettes were. Don't redefine a huge and nuanced equality movement based on extremists over correcting. Or do you guys think that feminists talking about how "women can be anything, even domestic abusers, take male victims of abuse seriously" are also signs of "gender over qualification".

Nobody, not this scene, not this comment, has ever mentioned feminism. Only you. This scene most likely was created to show that, in a male-dominated job (military, SpecOps), she isn't just a pretty face with smarts, but she can handle herself. The character of Sam Carter, while at times maybe a bit too perfect, was a good one. Much better compared to what we see in today's SciFi sadly. She had her flaws (difficulties having both a private life and a professional career for example), and her strengths can be explained by her being an elite soldier and scientist, plus that this was SciFi and they needed someone to come up with the solutions. Not to mention that she was part of a team, all of which had their jobs, their field where they shined.

The thing is that there are differences between a strong character and a strong female character. All you have to do is reflect that, but you can't do it if you constantly use being a woman as a reason to be strong. They are strong because the challenges ahead require it. However, when she introduces herself to Daniel, she says "Doctor Jackson I presume? I'm Doctor Samantha Carter" - it's important for her at this point to introduce herself as a fellow Doctor. In a sense, she's just adapting herself to her audience. It also allows O'Neill to quip "I thought you wanted to be called Captain?" so yeah, it is in many ways just funny. If I remember, with the initial addresses they had they weren't actually connecting to the other gates properly and would pretty much hit the closest one, which meant that it gave some side effects. This was mostly attributed to things like interstellar drifts with all the planets slowly moving away from where their gate address was. Even here during this "cringe" scene here we're learning interesting details Universe couldn't manage even that much while wasting people's time. And no the melodrama didn't help introduce us to the characters. speaking of Rush that's an excellent example of the shit writing in season one of Universe, like we get it Rush is a dick and his selfishness landed you in this mess. But they would constantly ignore their best expert and he was pretty much always right every time yet every episode they'd reset to not listening to him. Then one of the dipshits tried to leave him for dead, brilliant writing! Oh no wait, that was bad writing for drama. You rag on Atlantis but at least even people who didn't like Rodney because he could be insufferable weren't dumb enough to not listen to him or try to kill him for the dramas. Maybe you should just see people as people and not constantly think about what's between their legs on a mission? And you know, trusting that your government chose the right person for the job, instead of being an insubordinate, whiny prick?

everything about this scene is wrong, first Air Force corporate members or Airmen don't salute, they are civilians...lol second, saluting a COL when there is a General already present, damn who thought of that... third, how the fuck did i get here?

For what it's worth, later seasons had air force advisers and didn't make these sorts of mistakes.

Warning: many of the idiotic comments below are imposing a 2020 frame of mind onto a show from 1997.

I assure you, people made fun of that scene in the 90s too. It was really dumb. This and the Mongol episodes are considered the worst episodes of the series for a reason.
@Ragitsu

@@Dubanx Not compared to the 90s, no. What people fail to realize is the historical context; this kind of "in your face" feminist pushback was more of a necessity back in the day. We see it as heavy-handed now, but it helped to pave the way for more subtle messaging/activism.

Carter was such a women's lib pain in the ass when she started and seems very green. I don't remember why they dropped the freezing during gate travel and the disorientation
@SGtidbits
@SGtidbits 5 жыл бұрын
The freezing was due to misalignment of the gate due to stellar drift. That's because they used their own systems to dial the gate instead of a DHD which would have automatically compensated. At a certain point they figured it out and adjusted their systems in order to compensate.

“You don’t have to worry, I played with dolls as a kid.” OK, trying to translate from 1997 to today… Is she saying she’s not gay? Or maybe that she’s not trans? I was a kid at the time, so any kind of reference like that would have flown right over my head.

Maybe saying she isn't gay, probably just saying she wasn't a tomboy. Even for the day I'm not really sure what the writers were going for there.
