You may have heard that the Euros are coming up. I sat down to give a thoughtful look at what exactly is going to happen in Euro 2020. Why it’s not called Euro 2021 is very strange to me, who cares, it will confuse historians of soccer or football or whatever you say just leave me alone. Euro 2020/2021? The real issue here is that if you tried to abbreviate it by saying the back half of each year, it is still (20) (21) or 2021. Absolutely brutal, they had no option to combine them and had to choose.
Predictions like this one are inherently difficult, we have not gotten the normal cycle of national team play to provide a full indication of how good every national team is. This also means scouting is less than usual, so teams will be more capable of springing tactical surprises. Most of all, I’m just super into the fact that the Euros are happening and we can all just get excited about that.

Even in Brasil, if not for the injury of Shkodran Mustafi that finally forced Löw to move Philipp Lahm vom central midfield (where he sucked big time) to right full-back (where he excelled), we would never been able to win against France ( I believe we could still have thrashed Brazil because they just were that bad). Time and time again, Löw has cost us major titles just because he tried to be clever and did some really stupid things. I mean after the title win, everyone was saying that Löw had proved his critics wrong when ironically, the only reason we won that tournament was that Löw did exactly what the critics had said he needed to do for a very long time. So no, he isn't a good coach, and he never was.

You're the first person I've seen to put some respect on Switzerland. Anytime I've watched them play, they've always been a very well-drilled and hard to beat team. Similar to Villarreal in the EL final. I personally think France or Portugal will win it, and that's coming from an England fan. Reckon if we have to play Portugal in the first knockout game, they'll turn us over.

Switzerland have been hard to beat from when Hitzfeld was the coach, Petkovic basically plays the same way. Their problem has always been scoring goals in Finals games - Seferovic, Embolo and Mehmedi have 36 goals between them in 193 games and they are the main strikers.

But against France in the league of nations they played in a 4-3-3 with two DMs because he's insecure and plays defensively at times. As a Dane, I really don't see the NT pulling up any trees. We're lacking quality strikers/wingers and are overly dependent on Eriksen creating anything. Hand on heart, I cannot say this team is substantially better than the 2018 WC, where we were a dreadful watch. Football justice was served when Croatia won on penalties, if we're being honest. At best, Denmark are a hard side to beat and can draw against the big nations, but the ease of which Belgium dispatched them in the Nations League shows that they have no business beyond a QF.

@@Vintage_Davis A slaughter is what happened against the likes of Portugal, Colombia or even Ecuador. Was 2012 a major disappointment? Of course it was, but we went into the last group game still having qualification in our hands. That's what was most disappointing for me, not even putting up a fight against a then average Czech side. Especially after getting a result against a favored Russian team before that. The current team is closer to the 2016 side quality wise, you cannot deny that. As for form, individually a lot of the players are coming out of good seasons for their clubs, definitely more so than 3 years ago in Russia. As a team I will reserve my judgement until I see the Slovakia game as for the first time since 2002 I am honestly unable to predict who the coach is going to field in the opening game. The crazy thing is I would be more confident about Poland finishing top 2 if Brzeczek was still in charge. I think if you're going to bring in a coach like Sousa and turn everything on it's head you have to do it straight after the 2018 World Cup, not just before a major tournament. As for the "easiest group we've ever had" sentiment, I'm hearing that almost every tournament since 2002 and yet the outcome is almost always identical. No chance at anything after game number 2. The only exceptions were 2012 and 2016 actually.

Paulo Sousa has not impressed at all since he took over Brzęczek's Poland side. Brzęczek got the results, unlike Sousa, and looking at group e, each team outside of Poland has a manager that knows how to grind out a result. If we take all that into consideration, nothing points to Poland doing what Sweden did in 2018 and what Costa Rica did in 2014. The same could be said about Croatia, drawing against Armenia and losing against Slovenia and Sweden. It would really surprise me if Croatia did anything close to what they did in Russia 3 years ago.

6:01 - That pronunciation was *very* good. And the reason his first name sounds French is that one of his parents (his mother if I recall correctly) is French. Edit: I originally wrote that I believe you underestimate Denmark, but having us advance to QF in a presumably tight match against Poland feels pretty right. I think we can beat England, we had the upper hand against them in Nations League after all. I believe Denmark will finish ahead of Russia though. Four losses since 2017, where one was on penalties and the other was an amateur team we were forced to play because the pros were on strike (last two were against Belgium), tells a story of a team that's very hard to beat. Schmeichel would start for England, and I think Kjær and Christensen would be in contention for a spot in their lineup too. And our starting midfield wouldn't be far off either.

Denmark will qualify in my opinion but it’s close with Russia. Denmark are a very tough side to beat. Also Poland aren’t good, Sweden and Spain qualify. If you think England will beat Germany and Portugal in the same tournament I have some bad news for you 😂

As a Belgian, I hope your right but we might miss a match fit Witsel who solidifies our aging and declining defense from the midfield, Hazard and De Bruyne are questionmarks due to injuries and we will rely on Lukaku to have a 2002 Brazilian Ronaldo-esque tournament. Honestly, I fear we might be the surprise of the tournament in a bad way but since we can get through as a 3rd, I would be surprised if we won´t get to the KO stages. That being said, I have doubts we´ll be as convinving as we would want and certainly expect to be against other top countries since there are too much ifs when it comes to Belgium to become the Kings of Europe. But then again, who expected Portugal to be the 2016 winners?
