If I'm guessing, it is that Rudy bought as much as he could, sold very little...and is pumping the market to increase his ability to leverage the "value" of his supply to get loans moving forward. As for me, I did buy a bunch of the poster cards when they were initially released and were low in price. With between 1 to 3 posters/box it seemed like opening a full six boxes still did not guarantee a full set of the poster cards. I think the key Commanders will always have a high draw (Sauron, Gandalf, Aragorn, Saruman, Tom B, Witch King) and think that in the long-run (7+ years from now) the best investment to sell at a later time is in any of the key cards that people want to use/play/own. So that leaves the question...what are the top 3 Commanders people want to use to play?

I think the 10s deserve a high price, but these prices are just silly. It is FOMO, people are hoping on making $10-$20k etc. Maybe in 10 years, but to me there is a huge difference in making rare cards and a card being rare on it's own. If I had these I would sell them all day and use that money for other things. You can slap $20,000 on a listing, doesn't mean people are going to pay that. Plus when you get into that expensive buyer territory, it's usually 1% or less buyers. I bet you these $10k+ listings get bombarded with lowball offers in hopes the seller accepts. There just isn't that many people who have $20k to burn. Yes having a card worth $20k is nice, you could be sitting on it for months though. These people fishing for a deal will keep your listing on tab and wait. Patience wins.

So if magic follows the same pattern as sports cards, which they have constantly for the whole life of the game, serialized cards will become close to worthless unless they are a low number chase cards. On average, there are four to eight serialized cards to an average box of sports cards. That is also on cards that will never be reprinted, and magic now is constantly reprinting cards. The lord of the rings cards may be stable as a collectible as long as they are never reprinted, I have a feeling that they may recycle universes in the future as they are not a reserved list cards. The licenses are the only thing to prevent easy reprinting. Cards should never be reprinted once they are serialized as that completely destroys their rarity. We do not need in every set the top card be serialized. I would suggest cards be retired with serialized numbers, and first-time chase cards should be the only serialized cards. These boxes are expensive as long as all those cards are never reprinted.

The joy of people in the comments not understanding the difference between players and collectors. They are not mutually exclusive. A collector will enjoy their one singular Beta Underground Sea. They don't give a crap about buying a play set. A player will not typically fathom paying $3K for a single card. This was evident every time a game breaking card was introduced. The players that cried about Ragavan were upset it was nearly $400 for a playset. Blamed MTG as "pay to play". Lets not forget about the wave of butthurt from players crying over that pro player taking the Foil Tarmogoyf over the playable card for his deck. "Average MTG Players" were not the target audience for serialized cards, COLLECTORS were. If players were the target, it wasn't the average player. It was the player whose Legacy deck used only Guru Basic Lands, Judge Foil Fetch Lands, Japanese Foil Innistrad Delver of Secrets, Judge Foil Lightning Bolts, Judge Arena Foil Counterspells, Japanese Foil Mercadian Masques Brainstorms, signed Beta Dual Lands, and a playset of Artist Altered and signed Foil Japanese Jace the Mind Sculptor from Worldwake. Get over yourselves. Play the game you want to play with the cards you want to play with. Go jump on to r/bootlegmtg and buy yourself a set of BL or Usea's proxies for $29.99 shipped from china

Have you ever actually tried to sell these serialized cards? LOTR is probably the best you can do in terms of serial cards but for most other sets if you actually want to sell you'd have to sell at 50% of 'market' price which is completely made up in the first place. There's not a huge market on these cards.
