I have to commend you on the effort, you got the idea correct - without mixing up terms - just the numbers are a bit off, so you only made a "glow tube". Here's a few points: 1 - Your vacuum is many orders of magnitude too high. That single-stage pump is a toy, the gauge can't measure anything near what you need(for that you need at least a pirani gauge). What you need is a 2-stage rotary vane pump, connected to a turbomolecular pump, and a fine needle valve(or just a needle valve with a looooong capillary) to regulate the pressure _after_ you pump down and clean the chamber out. 2 - If the chamber(jar) can withstand what you just put it through, it can survive any level of vacuum. Keep in mind that the difference between atmosphere and high vacuum is literally billions of times higher than the difference between foreline and ultrahigh vacuum. As soon as you hit foreline pressure, you're starting to count the amount of stuff remaining in the chamber, not the actual pressure. 3 - The voltage is way too low, and while rectified, it's still pulsed AC. You need to add capacitors to get DC, and go up to around 15-30kV to create the plasma you're looking for. 4 - That GMC-320 meter is a nearly-blind pile of trash. It can't really see x-rays, can't see neutrons at all, and the sensitivity to everything else is through the floor. To see x-rays, you want something like a Ludlum Model 3 with a 44-9 pancake probe. There's other, cheap alternatives, but too many list here. To see neutrons is another ordeal, but unless you're putting in deuterium, that's not something you have to worry about. The people on fusor forums are... a bit antiquated. There's _far_ easier ways of doing a lot of stuff they talk about nowadays. If you want advice with choosing the right parts and building an actual fusor, I'd be happy to help, just send something to (my name)@(my name).re and we can chat.

Thanx for turning up on KZbin. It’s been a very entertaining year. Great videos with even greater commentary. Awesome choice of projects that brings complex science to understandable garage level. If you have the energy, you have the audience. Just keep it on a manageable level. Don’t let idiots like us interfere with your life.

You are a genius I discovered your videos about 20 days ago (it was in the middle of exams for me in mechanical engineering school). They really helped me keep my spirits up during this period when I didn't have time to go to the workshop. Now I've seen them all Hahaha So thank you! And congratulations! I really admire the ability to move forward through problems with the intelligence to sometimes not look too hard for details to get to the point faster. By the way, if one day you come to Switzerland, know that I will be able to provide you with room, board and a private workshop 😊 That would be so cool. I built myself a nifty workshop with lathes / milling machine / CNC milling machine / welding / and everything else at in the garage of the farm.

You don't really have to worry about the glass imploding as you get into a deep vacuum. The actual pressure difference between the vacuum you were at and the deepest vacuum you can achieve is not very much so if they vessel can hold up to what you put it through it can hold up to any level of vacuum.

First time viewer here. I also use the turn it on and bravely run away method most of the time. However my cat would rather nap, so when vacuum testing canning jars, I noticed mine fit nicely into 2-liter soda bottles. I can't promise it is enough protection, but having blown up a lot of 2-liter bottles I know they're tough and mostly shrapnel-free, tending to stretch and rip in one place instead of shatter. My possibly dumb thought is if the glass implodes, the plastic might stretch a bit if fast moving glass hits it, slowing it down instead of also shattering. I think the glass shards will magically not cut the plastic. I can't see if it actually worked according to plan since my eyes mysteriously disappeared during the test. j/k. Probably the right way to test is to submerge the vessel in water in a strong tank and pump it down. If water will stop a speeding bullet, it will probably stop relatively slow moving glass. It might also help see where leaks are. I think other commenters are right, the pressure difference between where you already had it and a perfect vacuum is essentially zero so if it implodes, it probably would have anyway for other reasons. And really, the pressure is about the same that inflates a football, just in the opposite direction so the glass is under compression instead of tension which is probably what glass likes. Shit happens though so...

Definitely a better approximation of a star than that wooden thing, nice. I don't think you have much to worry about when it comes to taking the pressure much lower, as the jump from 21.5"Hg to a perfect vacuum is not that big. Although yeah, safety first. Also, technically what you made is a full-wave rectifier, just not a "full"-bridge rectifier (it's a half-bridge).

Hey! First off love your videos for many reasons but to keep it short I appreciate you as a person and for the content you provide ❤️ secondly…. I tried to make a fusor almost 2 years ago, had almost all of the equipment needed to do so except a high voltage feed through. I’ve got multiple stainless steel UHV parts and chambers, piping, flanges, seals, two compact diffusion pumps and everything. Would you by chance be interested in having me ship them out? I’m saddened I have not accomplished it but i went way over budget and have moved on. Please let me know as it would be worth it just to see someone actually finish what i didn’t!
