This is my least functional and probably most annoying project to clean so far, but we'll see how it goes long term! I always planned for some sort of garden under the stairs, and I've been wanting to bring more Japanese design into our home. Most traditional Japanese designs tend to look "old-fashioned" to Jun so it's fun for me to try to integrate them in ways that feel modern to him while still representing a blend of our cultures. It's made to be removable so if it ends up being annoying to keep up with we can easily just put the rocks outside in our garden. But the area is now nicely organized instead of the random item storage that it was becoming and we think it looks amazing!!

I wonder if there's some kind of clear coating that you could spray on the rocks... say, like acrylic... that would both be waterproof and might also prevent hair from getting in between them? The downside would be that they'd always have to remain in place in order to keep the seal.

It’s actually pretty sweet that Rachel and Jun gave Thunder the best possible life a beta fish could ever ask for. I’ve seen so many of those poor babies in horrible conditions at pet shops and it’s really sad because fish are pretty neat. And Rachel burying him beneath the tree is what I did as a kid when my fish passed away, child me want them to grow into a beautiful fish tree lol

As someone in the vet field… THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR TALKING ABOUT HOW WHEN ANIMALS GET OLD THEY WILL STRUGGLE TO CONTROL THEIR BLADDERS!!! You won’t believe how many times we get owners complaining about their 15+ year old dog peeing in the house when he “knows better.” They then demand we “fix them” when we explain they’re not doing it on purpose and it’s just because they’re old. I’ve had people furiously ranting about how their pet has ruined their carpet and it’s NOT THE ANIMAL’S FAULT! Anyway, you guys are amazing pet owners.

You can use mint oil to deter cats from being in certain areas! It's smells very very strong to them and works REALLY WELL. But try not to have it get on their fur as it can cause stomach problems if digested. I like hiding cotton balls soaked in mint oil inside of a small lidded cup I've drilled holes into. You could hide a something like that along with the white rocks!

If your a coffee drinker you can also use coffee grounds. We put them in little dishes or attached to tape(the tape doesn't work great for us because one of our cats loves the taste of adhesive and the sounds of tape when it's bitten) they both HATE the smell of coffee and as long as you have a decent barrier of coffee around the edges it works really well

My dad is exactly like Jun. Hates coin in his wallet so he puts all the coins in a big cookie jar but then it became two jars and then three and then seven and then more. Basically each jar weighs at around 15kg-20kg. He also puts any random coins he found lying around the house into the jar. Last time we counted, we had over 7k. That was 4 years ago. It probably is more now.

My uncle has 3 jars. When he gets home he sorts pennies in one, nickels and dimes in another, and quarters in the last. When the jars fill he goes and gets them converted to cash. One year he paid some taxes with how much was in those suckers.

When he retires, if he feels it's hard to go from going in every day to nothing, he can then use the same coins he's saved all these years to save his sanity! A lot of people take time to adjust to retirement by starting a hobby. Your dad can look through his stash to find rare/collectable coins and make albums or sets. He may come out with a Lot more than face value of the irritating pocket stuff!😢 Like the sand that irritates an oyster until it turns into a pearl!😂

The moment you said about the rocks my first thought was "One of the cats is gonna pee in there" and lo and behold XD We had a garden that was mostly rocks and gravel for the longest time so I know cats will just use that kinda stuff as a litterbox, all the outdoor cats would be there all the time. We weren't allowed to change the garden so we had to just put up with it until we moved.

Oh, careful with that ficus! They're mildly to moderately toxic to cats, especially the sap, don't let Poki chew on it! :3 Although I'm sure you guys already knew that! Either way the whole rock garden looks very lovely, it fits there beautifully. Maybe painting the sideboards of the wooden tray white would make them blend in a little more with the tiling? :) Also: I know one is always the most critical of their own work, but I was honestly amazed by how good-looking that three-piece shelf is, for how simple it is! The acacia(?) wood visually does a lot for it, it's definitely not "craft-project looking", as you called it, in any bad way. :) --- Frankly, it looks like something I would stumble across at Granit (trendy interior décor store here) and be sad that I can't afford it! (At the mention of shelves: I hope Jun's shelf got a nice new spot elsewhere, it's such a lovely one he built there!)

You could also use construction adhesive, like 'liquid nails' from the hardware store. That stuff is way stronger than tape and probably less expensive as well. If you glue wisely, most modern adhesives can achieve a bond that's stronger than the material it's glued to (except metals, obviously).

15:40 there's plastic drywall screws that allow you to screw a normal screw in them. They look like an auger. Google "plastic drywall screw" or "plastic drywall anchor". I recently ran into a similar issue with the drywall anchors (anchors too long, hit the outside stucco, too little drywall). We trimmed the anchor to size and it worked! Not the best idea but it works for something lightweight. Alternatively, can you purchase 3M brand Command Strips or Mounting tape in Japan? If nothing heavy is going on that shelf, those strips work wonders (20-30lbs/9-13kg)!

I highly recommend an enzyme cleaner to get rid of the cat pee scent on the rocks. There are also sprays that you can use on furniture/objects that will deter cats. If you get rid of the scent with an enzyme cleaner and then use a detrrent, that will hopefully stop the cats from peeing in places you dont want them to.

I think if they maybe had a plexiglass top for the rocks that maybe had cut outs for the plants, or the plants could just sit on top? Still have the aesthetic with out the risk of New Litter Box

AC: Hot and cold create moisture, there is no way around it. However, you can re-direct it to outside or into a drain pipe using a clear soft tube. Just keep gravity in mind when installing the tube. Hiring someone to "fix" the problem when the problem requires creative thinking, it's just never going to happen. Get a level and see where the AC is slightly off balance to see where a drip tray likely needs to be (or just cover the entire bottom with a drip tray if you can find or make one), then attach a tube to the drip tray and have it go down 1+ inch underneath the tray and direct it outside by drilling a hole just big enough for the tube (but not too tight or it'll be a nightmare to fish it through the hole), then have the tube stick out from outside about 2 inches to prevent heavy water from AC from creating a stain on the outside wall. Apply some caulking around the tube / hole to seal it from outside elements and that should solve the problem. Why it's dripping now and not before... I don't know as I'm not too familiar with that particular AC style. Maybe there is already a tube leading outside and it's plugged, or maybe it has a drip tray that isn't drained at all and it overflowed, I just don't know as I'm not there to see the issue. But I do hope this comment suggestion helps.
